  • Heading to Washington DC to

    April 26 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Ok camera I have has massive memory card and the docking memory stick is too small to download all good photos I took of NY etc so am looking around here or seatlte for better one then post pics sorry troops was very dissapointed with it.Oh well.
We have headed out of Big Apple to Washington to visit Arlington Cemetary and Vietnam Memorial to soldiers who served in that conflict.
First few pics are inside Penn Station New York and inside the Moniham Level for Amtrak trains it is massive and it has about 5 to 7 levels of platforms and is very busy, people every where and lots of food outlets etc
You have to sit in designated areas of your trip destination and wait to be ushered down to relevant platform.
We were taken to our train down 2 level then along the platform with our guide and he helped us on with our bags and ramp for my little scooter.
We were put in a quiet carriage and yes signs every where telling you to be quiet.
The man who sat behind must have had Italian for tea as he reaked of garlic so bad boy it stunk, had to put up with it for about 2hrs at which I was starting to feel sick from it.
The train went in reverse to DC then it goes forward to NY and does it all day long.
It goes through Philiadelphia Wilmington,Baltimore then DC.
It flies along so getting pics was very hard but got a couple though
Housing changes along the route to very nice to run down shanty types which is a shame.
We arrived and were helped into a cab to motel which is very posh indeed from last digs LOL.
    Will post more after arlington.

  • Among the lost and remembered

    April 26 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today we hit a very impressive Arlington National Cemetary that has in it vast amounts of history and museums.
We start of at Vietnam Veterans memorial walk which has over 58,000 names inscribed in it for the Americans killed in Vietnam Conflicts.
The amount of people who recognised me as an Aussie who was in Vietnam was very gratifying and special especially the young American teenagers who came from Dallas and Illanois who thanked me for my service. It hits home when you get recognition from total strangers. One african American vet even yelled out aver a small crowd "without that Aussie Veteran helping us over there I would be not here"then he said "that is true my brother hooraaah to you my brother and thank you for saving us".I said "thank you for your time over too brother hoooraaaah to you".
The Lincon memorial was and is windblown as to the scale of it has to be at least 20 to 30 ft high and 10 ft across the chair.Ceiling is a good 60 ft high and all the inscription are chiselled into the stone.
The amount of people there today were amazing and that happens every day.
We then hopped on to one of the many tour buses to do the round trip of the whole area glad we did it covers over 15 km of the arlington,Washington area .

  • Take us out to the ball game

    April 30 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

OK here it is folks the good old Baseball game live, first few pics are of the Diamond with the both teams warming up ,in white home team Seattle Mariners Vs in red Los Angeles Angles.
Rest of pics in this lot are of stadium and crowd building up first hit at 1,10pm on the dot and yep to see it live is fantastic glad we went.
We got there early to get some merch and yeah we did get the best of them 2 jackets and 2 baseballs and Marriners scarf, all up a great merch store at arena and it was
Fist pic is Neil's jacket 2nd pic Debs jacket. They are soooo nice can't get them anywhere except from team store only and were not cheap but once in a life purchase for us guilty for spending what we did naaahhh not in the slightest have now got our memories of a ball game with merch.

  • Hot dogs are coming

    April 30 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Here is the rest of the game, you have to stand for their anthem local young school kids sang it was great. The rest are of the game and if you can get the video ones watch them and you will see the pitch and batting. All the pitchers are in mph and range from 94 mph for a sliding pitch tom 99.4mph for the 4seam fast ball.
After each pitch the speed is put up on the side screens along with type of pitch slider etc.
After they get 3rd base loaded close to a home run every body stands and cheers so loud and if they get a home run bedlam breaks loose with cheers, yelling and laughing at the other teams pitcher thanking him for the run.
The politics of baseball is unreal to say the least here is a smidgen, the pitcher gets 15 sec to pitch, batter has to get ready to face pitcher in that same time. When they get 3 out they get 2min to change and get on field.
When a ball is hit and fouled behind catcher they get it and write on it the batter, pitch number and the innings ie;3rd etc and who they played then these balls get sold in their team shop for upwards of 20 to 100 dollars.
Depending on who hits it the top batter is Rodrigueze he gets the higher price on the ball.
Most balls caught are all thrown into the crowd as with long hit fouled balls.
Very quick game average for game is 4 hrs max, started at 1.10 finished after 9 innings at approx 5pm with Mariners winning 7 home runs to Angel's 3.
We got there by cab easy but trying to get a cab home different story rang 5 times then waited 45 mins and finally hailed different cab company cab and got home to motel then.
For some reason cabs here do not use radio to base calling mostly done by I pad etc and the rigmarole you go through to explain where you are and destination well tell a 3 year old kid they would have a better understanding of the conversation.Very frustrating and to be in an area for where the cabs are likely to be good luck we haven't had that luck here or Washinton.
Over here nearly every one uses Uber etc for the same reason cabs are hard to get and if fare is under 10 dollars forget it they will say no not enough for me.
Give us good old Aussie cabs.

    May 3 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Still more pics of the town on our tour.Driver turned out to be a thespian and put on plays, magic shows and recites poems from the early 1800s quite the character he is.
They get all their supplies by barge and railway and as soon as they are off loaded the shops are nearly bare of products.
He said they pay $5.00a gallon for fuel compared to our $8.00 gallon and they believe their paying too much for it wow when we told him our prices his mouth was agape and he said he ain't complaining about it any more. The cost of food Doz eggs $12.00,pint carton milk 8.00 and meat up to $20.00 a pound.
Hospital is one building and has up to 2 permanent nurses and 6 on call who help out ,1 dentist, fire chief, police seargent, and dispensary (chemist) and 4 ambulances to which the nurses drive, now if you get sick they will stabilise you so you can be air lifted out of town to the hospital probably vancouver.

  • Blowing in the wind yoouucchh.

    May 4 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

OK we have docked in Skagway the town of the gold rush in the 1800 to the early 1830 when gold ran out. Most building in town are reflection on that era and its stepping back in time.
The early pioneers had to trek either by boat and canoes or overland for over a 1,000miles to get here for the gold and they had to bring all their provisions with them as well. Most of them perished in the wild ,alk about hard slogging and trekking the wilds of Alaska.
The first pic is of the big landslide that happened 5yrs ago hitting a cruise ship in the dock and blocking the river for 3 weeks and ship and passengers had to wait for slide to be cleared before it could sail out and get passengers of and get repaired, they stopped all river traffic completely till they cleared the blockage.
The outside temp is 12c but wind is just above 6km hr and goes literally right through us.
Skagway is a town that solely relies on tourism to survive and in a few weeks will be a stop of point for up to 15 cruise ships and 20 motor coach tours that come here for the day.
First pics are of the dock and board walk to buses etc the rest are of the town and buildings, take note of snow plough and old Casey Jones locomotive that use to clear snow of the line up to 15years ago then got retired for a up to date locomotive train.
The other pics are the town and most of the pics are of buildings that have been here since the 1800.
The building in pic7 has the facades done in driftwood that has been collected from the river that has floated down from the upper reaches of the river fantastic architecture in the town.

  • Wet and very cold Janeau

    May 5 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

We docked in this big town that has rain nearly 365 days a year and yep it was light but wet and chilly.
Today we set out to the top of the big hill that is 1,800 ft above the town and turns out it is higher than Empire state building NY and the Eiffel tower Paris very impressive in deed.
The ride up in the tram car was exilerating as we were at 45 deg going up and down but very smooth till you get near the top it got a bit blowey and it swayed a little but wasn't to bad.
The view from the top is impressive to say the least, you can walk the trail to the glacier if you want we didn't and found outlater it was very slippery and a bit dangerous to walk it.
