    Returning to earth for retail therapy.

    We slid back to earth and started our shopping for momentos for us and the family.
    We met a store owner and she said it has been raining non-stop for 4 weeks so far.
    And today they are expecting five cruise ships in today and for the rest of the week four a day must inject thousands into their economy.
    The pics of the native massage from local tribes and priced at $3,000 and up but truly impressive work,plate is done with native grass and dyed the colours by crushing rocks to get colour it was $2,000.
    The other pics are of wildlife shot by locals both bears were over 8ft tall on hind legs and the moose was around same height very impressive size.Imagine running into them on your stroll down a path or track scary indeed.Did our retail and came back to ship to warm up and eat,pizza for lunch and a Pepsi very nice    Baca lagi

    Arrived in Ketchikan

    Had a leisurely cruise to this quaint little river town.Woke to clear sky and sunshine after very overcast skies yesterday.
    This town is the home of the totem poles in Alaska and in the pics 4,5,6 is where the totems are thought of and carved by master carver and the apprentices,they take up to a year to do some even longer depending on the story they are going to represent.
    The only one who knows what the story or tale is going to look like is the carver.They make a template as in pic4 and 5 which is placed onto the redwood log then the template is transferred to the log.
    The tools they use to carve out the totem are all hand made and each is different to the others.You can see the tools in pic 6 behind the new totem.
    The totem in pic 5 was carved in 1899 and the red wood is used because it rots from the inside out and takes years to consume the totem.Once it is carved and painted they are stood up by hand and are not touched or repainted ever,the paint on the one in pic 5 has not been touched at all absolutely amazing to see.     Stunning totems

    These are more of the totems in a small park with the traditional tribal meeting place behind in pic 7 .
    They all tell a story and if you see the two beside each other at the entrance to the park in pic 15 and 7 they are to ward off evil and protect all other totems.
    Pic 8 is of Pres Lincoln to signify his interactions with the Indigenous tribes in Alaska,it was carved in his honour as appreciation from the native people.
    Pic 14 is of a lost son depicting a raven on top looking to the heavens and seeing if he was there and two tribes men on the bottom searching for him on the ground and forest.
    So every one is different depending on the story    Baca lagi

    Totem story of ravens

    OK these three poles with ravens on the top and a boy down below denote a little boy who was lost in the area one crow is looking to the heavens searching to see if he is there,the other is looking toward the water searching to see if he is there and the last is looking in the forest searching to see if he is there .

    The last dinner on board

    Pizza made fresh with pepperoni absolutely delicous too.
    Bags all packed taged and outside door forcollection and ready for us to just get on shuttle and go.
    Here we are coming into Victoria in British Coumbia ( Canada) for what was to be a short stop but alas the gods decided to make very rough weather so the harbour pilot has decided to veto docking so now it's onto Seattle for all.
    That is where we do our good byes to all and head to Vancouver for our r&r for two days.Looking forward to driving to Whistler and seeing hopefully wildlife at last.Will post again when we finish the road trip.    Baca lagi

    Arrived Vancouver

    OK arrived late last night around 830pm due to delay on take off
    Had to hold for half hour before we left.
    Looked at our hire car paperwork and discovered it was for wrong dates I boo bood good as it was for April 8 not May 8,oh well had to get an avis car instead a Dodge Durango SUV for same price its the one pictured.It is the size of a Dodge Ram but in 7 seat configuration and yeah is a joy to drive has all bells whistles and a 6.7ltr V8 which is very economic considering its size.
    Have had little adjusting to driving it but seem to be getting the hang of it as no horn beeps or swearing at us yet lol.
    We are in Whistler no and it is absolutely stunning just like a little ski village.Will post more pics later.    Baca lagi

    Whistle stop in Whistler

    The first pic is of Vancouver outskirts and all the high rise units around the place they are everywhere.And we aren't even in the heart of the city either as all roads skirt around the centre to keep the congestion down very good thinking but a nightmare in peak hour similar to Brissy and Gold coast highway.
    OK the Winter olympic games were held in Whistler in 2010 and it has now been turned into a vibrant hub for the winter sport people and a nice quiet little town 123km north of Vancouver.
    We arrived and straight away it is a stunning drive up and the town is a picture of mountains along with bike riders skiers and snow boarders walking around town at times with their gear.
    The pics in the shop is a Walmart store in Richmond Vancouver yeah two stories of it and 60 yes 60 checkout of all descriptions,we were here for new small case to bring stuff home as me being a Ret Veteran our overweight bags and any little carry on ones can go in cargo for nothing just because I am a Veteran wow don't get that in Aussie land,yep makes me feel really chuffed to be recognised and treated like that by strangers.
    The pics of the river and the huge rock formation is coming back.The buses here are all electric and run with poles touching the wires aver head looks like a huge bug with antennas on its back will try and get a pic of one tomorrow.
    We are sorcing maple syrup lollies and maple cream biscuits to bring home so be ready to taste test OK just saying have not tried either but from all accounts they are delicious.    Baca lagi
