Batalha, or the Saint Mary of Victory Monastery, built in the 14th century, ensured King Joao would succeed his father, even though he was illegitimate. It was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Ajubarrota in 1385 and is considered to be one of masterpieces of the area. There is still a part of the monastery that is unfinished, but remains very beautiful. We had time to explore and have lunch at a small cafe before moving on to Coimbra, our final stop of the day.Les mer
