  • In Geteria by the sea.

    August 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

A Five hour walk is enough for me today! I took a designated walking area on the edge of a busy road that curls around from Zarautz to Getaria (the alternative route). Though it was loud with roaring cars and busses passing, still, to the right was a lovely sea view. Lots of local people were walking their dogs, babies, and speed walkers for fitness. There were several young people with towels taking the 3.7-mile walk to the beach. They're used to walking a lot here. I was really impressed how the beaches all have permanent changing tents. There are umbrellas and chairs available to the public.
A man was making a fabulous sand sculpture of a pig💕💕.
I found a nice albergue: Txalupa(chalapa), very clean and pleasant. I've already washed my clothing, showered, and now for something to eat. The juga de naranja fresca( fresh orange juice) is not as abundant as on the Camino frances. Rather, non existing in Basque country, and I'm craving it now.

  • Getaria farming grapes.

    September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

I'm impressed how the grapes are grown here. To harvest, you may walk under the trellises of woven wire and easily pick the hanging clusters. Their farming style is so meticulous. The woman statue is checking out the daisy plant in her water catcher.Read more

  • UP & DOWN & UP, UP, UP!!!

    September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

The never-ending, up day! A nine hour hiking day for me! Most people I met and the end of the hike had agony in their faces. It was a hard day. Slippery from the rain the day before and steep. But the way is beautiful! Even when I am gasping for air, rather than take my breath away , the beauty revives my breath.
A vendor was parked up the mountain, near a small park with picnic tables. With the few choices he offered of drinks, I took a Nesté con limon. I asked him how far to Deba and responded with an answer in Spanish, and I understood quite clearly that I still had miles to go. Ugh ( he saw my face drop)! After I paid, he laid an apple on top of my can and said, "Buen Camino." I sat in the grass, up against the tree, took a bite of that most delicious apple, and cried. Being so exhausted and weary, that sweet, generous gesture of giving me an apple was just what I needed. After my drink and apple, I was able to carry on.
I reached Deba at 7pm. There was an outage of electricity in the town. So we had no lights and cold showers (so we were told). But the showers were luke warm and pleasant enough. It's amazing how, after a shower and clean cloths can rejuvinate one so immediately. The tiered and weariness were gone. We had plastic sheets on the bed, so I'm glad to have my silk liner with me to lay as my sheet. I had 4 spanish jock boys in the room with me. But they were kind and respectful of space. I was pleasantly surprised that there was no snoring from them. Tomorrow's another steep climb, and it's pouring rain now. I'll deal with mañana, mañana.

  • Getaria to Deba

    September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I just can't get enough of discovering the fauna & flora wherever I go! I discovered these little insects that sleep inside these pillowy pods. There are beautiful donkeys, goats, and cows over every bend. Sure, footed cows stand near the edge of the sea. They are not so concerned about trimming the weeds on the road's edge because it stays so green and moist. There is less worry of brush fire. The wild growth provides beauty and harbors habitat for many creatures and insects.Read more

  • An alternative route to Markina-Xemein

    September 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

I woke this morning while still dark. The sounds of packs russeling, silouetted pilgrims with torches on their forheads were packing their gear. Whispers of many languages softly babbling, toilets flushing, a street cleaner roaring up the streets. The morning is hustling, with or without electricity.
I watched pilgrims with ponchos and pack covers marching off in the pouring rain to challenge the slippery slopes. I thought, " I don't feel that brave this morning." Many people were choosing to take a bus or train to the next town or change their coarse altogether.
By the time I set up to go, the lights came on. I met Inge (from Holland), who asked me a question in Dutch. Since I've been here, there are several times that people assumed I was a Hollander.
Inge and I were so much enjoying a conversation, and we agreed that we should go to breakfast and continue our visit. At that moment, no hike or anything was more important than to sit and enjoy eachothers company.
Now that's the comino to me. Go organically, and let the spirit guide.
Another mother and daughter couple ( from Munich)decided to take the bus to Markina. I thought that was a good idea. I'm in no way wanting to challenge the slippery slopes.
Inge went off to Bilboa. We all kissed goodbye and went our way. I needed a rest day. And if I want to meet Mario in Santiago by October 5th. I may have to do a couple of leaps. And this climb today was worth the skipping.
So here I am, in Markina, in another donativo. It's humbling to be here. I almost turned around and bolted for a hotel. But it is really interesting to confront the things that make me uncomfortable. For that, sometimes it is a larger challenge than a mountain. And then it's not so bad. This old monastary has been my muse. I want to write again. We never know where our muse will come from.

  • Enjoyed a good night's sleep!

    September 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After picking up our clothing from the drying racks (where they never dry here from so much humidity), and pulling our muddy shoes from the shelf, I set off early morning with a small troop of pilgrims to head for Gernika-Lumo from Markina-Xemein. We all end up seppperating, following our own rhythm and focus as we challenge hiking the terrain. The challenge this day was mucking and sliding through mud, for it rained on us for the good part of the morning.
Another 10 hour day of walking, and tonight I choose to enjoy a hot shower, a full plate of pinchos with wine, and a bed with a set of sheets in a hotel room of my own. 💖heavenly!

  • To Bilboa and the Guggenheim Museum

    September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 21 °C

What a fun place to visit! A delightful experience for your senses. Colors, shapes, and sound swim all around you. Had a wonderful afternoon of veiwing and pincho tasting. It was hot and muggy all day. Now 8: in the evening, thunder is crashing and it's pouring rain. Sun will be out tomorrow. But I will be walking again in muggy heat and mud.Read more

  • A few more from yesterday

    September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The warm, humid environment gives to growing large plush plants here. Agriculture is abundant . I thought it was a neat way of protecting the grapes, with wax coated paper bags around the clusters. There are so many creatures and those wonderful cows!💓Read more

  • Bilbao to Playa de la Areña

    September 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

I ended up taking a train from Bilbao to Portugalete, then walking to Playa de la Arena. And still It was a sweat and grit workout. I passed Bastilica of Santa Maria on the way. Cathedrals and churches are always a good resting place on the way. A place to take time for prayer, meditation, cool down, and coax a bit of encouragement to myself to carry on. I was glad to be able to have more time for swimming and walking on the beach. I ate out with a glass of vino blanco. I walked some more on the beach at 9: and 10: with other beach combers. There was even an ice cream booth on the warf, and I had vanilla ice cream on a cone. It all feels so luxurious, everything I taste, touch, and see after a long day of hard walking. I do appreciate the finer things we have in life, and I'm overwhelmed with gratefulness. I was able to sleep in a lovely room with an open window and clean sheets. A perfect evening!Read more

  • Playa de la Areña, Atlantic Ocean

    September 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

This is how it looks at night (8:&9:) at this lovely coastal town north of Spain. I took a long stroll down the beach. Today was an extra hot day, 94°and humid. This is the time when everyone comes out for refreshments by swimming and socializing at the bars on the warf. This is the prettiest town I've seen yet. The Atlantic Ocean is much warmer than our chilly Pacific. I like how there is a grate and benches with water spouts to wash sand from feet before putting shoes back on. It's a very active surfer town, too. I contemplate spending a couple of days here.Read more
