    March 28, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Day 1 of our trip, learning new and interesting things about what our amazing caravan does. We're at beautiful Sussex Inlet and all 4 of us are enjoying the new routine

  • Huskisson

    March 31, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Had lunch and a walk along the beach at Huskisson. Bosley is surprising keen to explore, we can't keep up with him!

  • Narooma

    April 6, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Narooma was a real surprise. It's very picturesque with beaches and bays and mountains and fields. And the wildlife is all around. We saw kangaroos, wallabies, foxes, stingrays and we had some seriously close encounters with some fur seals.

We stayed over the Easter weekend off-grid in a farmer's field. It went quite well, although we approached the limit of our fresh water tanks.

  • Bega

    April 10, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We tried something different at Bega and parked at the showground. It's a bit of a thing at country towns and we really enjoyed it. It's a lovely 150 year old showground with lots of character and we enjoyed watching the wide array of neighbours coming and going throughout the week.

We explored the surrounding region including Tathra, Merimbula and Bermagui. Discovered some wonderful deserted beaches and saw bats and seals (not together!) And a million white parrots that descended on the showground every night.

Off to the snowy mountains next!

  • Dalgety and the Snowy region

    April 24, 2023 in Australia

We stayed at the only original town left on the Snowy River (Dalgety) and explored the whole region. We real liked the old town and it was a great base to explore the rest of the region.

Despite staying in a relatively quiet little country town, we got up to some adventures including:

    - On the trip in Google maps took us (with the van!) down 30 k's of bumpy dirt road including having to drive through a flock of sheep
    - Waiting patiently by the river at dusk and seeing platypuses
    - Visiting a brewery down another long dirt road and fording a river
    - Dodging kangaroos bouncing along the road with us
    - Having to take poor Bosley in to have an emergency operation to have some of his tail cut off!

    So quite an eventful week!

Our explorations included Cooma, Jindabyne, Eucumbene Dam, Thredbo and climbed to the top of Mount Kosciuszko (the highest point in Australia).

  • Canberra

    April 25, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Canberra was full of great catchups with friends and relatives and celebrating Dad's 90th Birthday.

    Happy Birthday Dad!

Also, the caravan park we went to was new and very clean and neat, but didn't exactly have the rustic charm of previous places. More the style of a carpark, combined with a low security prison!

So we don't have a lot of magnificent nature and scenery pictures this time round but it was all about family and that's just fine.

Having said that, for the wild animal tally:
    - Several kangaroos around Black Mountain, and
    - 2 foxes up Mount Ainslee!

And Rebecca won the meat tray at the local pub! We just got it all in
    the fridge in the van.

  • Bucketts Way

    May 1, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

We had a 3 night stop over near Newcastle at Bucketts Way. This was a bit of a utility stop to get the caravan it's first service, get Rebecca's tooth fixed which threw a filling on the trip there! And to get some work done.

We stayed at a wonderful new bush caravan park called Bucketts Way. The caretaker, Brad, was amazingly friendly and helpful. The only disconcerting thing about him was the way he was unironically wearing a Trump 2024 cap the whole time!

  • Nambucca Heads

    May 6, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Nambucca Heads was our next stop on our way "up North" in our quest to outrun the cold!

On our way we caught up with our great friends Ann and Chris who
provided an action video of us heading off.

It was a relatively sedate 4 days but it was a beautiful area and we had some great walks along the river and beaches in the sun and the moonlight.

  • Murwillumbah

    May 9, 2023 in Australia

Murwillumbah was a beautiful country town inland from Tweed Heads at the top of NSW.

We stayed at the Murwillumbah Showground which was very relaxing and picturesque right up against a sugar cane field. It was great to walk around the town and see real-world country town things like the cattle sale yard, and the local wood-chopping team training site!

The scenery was amazing, especially the sunsets which we have included a couple of photos of but they don't do them justice.

Once again we explored the surrounding country-side, and once again Google Maps found a very off-road track for 12 kms while Rebecca was driving. She handled it really well. We also got briefly into Queensland on one day.

Adding to the wildlife sited list:
    - Emus one the side of the highway
    - Turtles in a rock pool

  • Maryborough

    May 15, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

    Planes, trains and Automobiles!

Its fair to say the caravan site in Maryborough wasn't one of our favourites. It was an odd little park which was literally the old gravel carpark for the nearby marina.

However, we really liked Maryborough. It is a very historic country town with a beautiful city centre. Highlights included Queens Park with its monuments, art pieces and a train track for maintenance of trains as well as steam train rides on Thursdays. We took the dogs on their first train ride - Bo was not impressed! Bosley took it all in his stride however.

Maryborough had a memorable and moving WW1 memorial which was extremely well done, and heart wrenching. It also had Mary Poppins statues, museums, and walk signals due to the author being born there.

    Adding to our animal sitings:
    - Cane toads (boo!)

  • Fraser Island

    May 19, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We had a day out at Fraser Island where we saw lots of four wheel drives, kilometers of beach, dingos, and Kevin went for a plane ride from the beach!

Notable were the pristine lakes and rivers and the amazing proliferation of huge trees.

    Adding to our animal sitings:
    - Dingos!

  • 1770 (yes thats the name of the town!)

    May 22, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Stayed at 1770 where Lieutenant Cook first landed and claimed the eastern side of Oz. Stayed in a 40 acres mountain property 5 min from town. Very dog friendly with large dog runs, doggy day care and dog wash.
1770 is a stunning place and luckily still largely unspoilt.

  • Rockhampton

    June 4, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Stayed close to Rockhampton. Our last big town before heading “outback”. Spent many hours stocking up on supplies and preparing the car and van.

  • Charleville

    June 16, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We've gone even more westward into the outback.

Charleville was an interesting little town with some fascinating history.

We found a very sociable caravan park just out of town. They had happy hour with a huge bonfire and damper every night.

New animal sitings to add to the list:
    - Bilbys
    - A bower bird (nest)
    - Sheep being walked on a lead!

  • Quilpie

    June 22, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Quilpie is a lovely outback town of around 500 people. It’s a big opal producing area. We were lucky enough to stay on a working sheep/goat/cattle station and camped overlooking a large lake. Dry and dusty but very authentic.Read more

  • Windorah

    June 27, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

On our way to Birdsville - we parked overnight out the back of the local pub.

We had a great meal there (parmis all round) and got an early dawn start on the mornings.

  • Betoota

    June 27, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

On our way to Birdsville, we stopped in at Betoota for lunch. Betoota is literally just a pub, and the menu is "sausage roll" or (meat) "pie" - decisions decisions!

Just outside of Betoota we went up the spectacular Deons lookout which demonstrated the spectacular countryside.Read more

  • Birdsville

    June 29, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Birdsville was a staging area on our way to Big Red Bash which is the most remote music festival in the world.

We stayed in Birdsville for a few nights exploring the town, doing some the iconic things like having a camel pie, and hanging out with some of the 10,000 fellow Bashers!

There was an immense amount of other caravans.
