    Ross Castle

    September 26, 2015 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

In the Killarney National Park is a small castle "Ross Castle" which dates back to the  15th century and was owned by one of the ODonoghue Ross chieftains who were essentially wealthy farm owners.
It was easy to take a step back in time and feel how they lived and even more how the Irish laws were in that time, at one point in the 18th century people were taxed for having roofs on the houses!! A ROOF TAX!! Along with window and candle tax! Some people found the price to much as did the owners ofthe castle at this time and burnt down the only wooden roof which housed the living and dinning quarters! Leaving it open to the elements and eventually turned to ruins! Only when the last known owner in the early 90's passed it along to the heritage center did it get restored fully and is now on display!
