    Muckross Abby

    September 26, 2015 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Now the pictures do NOT do it justice!
Muckross Abbey is one of the major ecclesiastical sites in Killarney. It was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary for the Observantine Franciscans. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became the burial place for prominent County Kerry poets O'Donoghue, Ó Rathaille and Ó Súilleabháin.
The abby although damaged and ruined as a result of many damages over the years from raids and attcks on the friary still holds so much history! The long corridors and open windows are stunning and the whole Abby is centered around a larg tree that has been growing in therw for hundreds of years!
One of the things that interested me was a tomb stone dating back three centuries and with my mothers maiden name! Have i a little Irish in my after all???
