    Getting to Know Vienna

Walked around the old town of Vienna, stopping to look at St Stephens Cathedral and some Austrian food stalls in the area. In the evening we went to the main Christmas markets on their opening night! It was super pretty with all of the light displays, and we went ice-skating which was super fun.

Fun fact of the day: the Vienna Christmas markets are the first ones to open in Europe every year.

    Trip to Schonbrunn Palace

Travelled to the main Hapsburg Palace to explore for the day. It was very extravagant and the gardens included a botanical garden, a zoo, a massive forest area (which was used for sport hunting) and great views over the city.Okumaya devam et

    Last Day in Vienna

Took the most of the good weather and went for a walk around the Belvedere Palace Gardens, another palace of the Hapsburg empire. In the afternoon we had a tour of the Vienna Opera Theatre, which was originally built in the 1800s but partially rebuilt in the 50s after being damaged in WW2.

Fun fact of the day: In the Vienna Opera Theatre's 300 day long season, no show is played 2 nights in a row, meaning the crew has to deconstruct and reconstruct the sets etc every day.

    Checking out the wall:

Visited the Berlin Wall Memorial site and the east side gallery, while being able to walk through both sides of the city and seeing the rugged beauty of the city.

Fun fact of the day: Berlin construction workers seem to listen to a lot of 'Men at Work' songsOkumaya devam et

    Seeing more of the city:
Visited the Brandenburg Gate, Berliner Dom, Granitschale im, the DDR museum about life in East Germany, Checkpoint Charlie and the Holocaust memorial.

Fun fact of the day: Granitschale im, the largest bowl carved from a singular stone, has a large crack down one of its sides, from when Hitler tried to move it so it doesn't take attention away from him when he used the square for events.Okumaya devam et

    Museum day in Berlin:
Spent the day at the Topography of Terror museum, which details the rise to power and horrors of the nazi regime. It was very interesting, though was mostly reading, so don't have many pictures. Went out with some of the friends I have made in Berlin that evening.Okumaya devam et

    Walking up the hill:
Visited Teufelsberg, which is a man made hill from the ww2 rubble being dumped out of the city which the US built a military base on top of during the cold war. But then it was abandoned and was all woods and the base is now a street art gallery.

    Fun fact of the day:
The rubble moved to create Teufelsberg hill equates to approximately 26 million cubic metres.

    Meeting my German family

Left Berlin in the morning and met the family I will be staying with in Wuppertal (courtesy of Luise who we met while she was also backpacking in her uni break). We went to dinner at a restaurant that used to be the building that enclosed the towns indoor public pool. Traditional German dinner, very delicious! We were then shown some of the family's favourite bars on a "pub crawl".

Fun fact of the day: Wuppertal used to be 2 different cities, which were combined into one metropolitan area under a new name in the early 1900s.

Up to the top of Innsbruck:

Went to the top of Innsbruck via cable car, and had a walk around (learnt how walk through snow). Hiked my way back down the mountain, stopping at Alpenzoo, a zoo exclusive for animals found in the alps area. My favourites were definitely the otters, but the wolves, lynx, beavers and chamois were cool too.

    Fun fact of the day:
Innsbruck town centre is 574m above sea level, but the mountain behind it reaches 2334m above sea level, meaning the mountain often has completely different weather to the rest of town.

    Music of Salzburg:
Started the day on a sound of music tour where I visited many of the locations they used to film in Salzburg. They looked just like the movie, just covered in a layer of snow. I also got to try a traditional (yet nut-free!) Apple strudel which was soooo good. In the afternoon I visited Mozart's birthplace and museum and got to see his childhood violin and some original handwritten scores.

Fun fact of the day: Mozart spent more than a third of his life in transit, travelling between cities he was performing or working in

    Up the hill:

Went up to the fortress which was very cool, but the view it is famous for was hidden by a very thick layer of fog (that got thicker as the day went on). Then went to the Christmas museum, which was right next to the christmas markets and was very beautiful.

Fun fact of the day: one time the fortress was under siege, they were running out of food and only had one bull left. Every day they painted it a different colour and walked it across the city walls to try and trick the enemy into thinking they have more food left than they did. It worked, the enemies thought that they could last months, so gave up and ended the siege.

    Lava Caves and Waterfalls

Travelled to Explore a cave carved by ancient lava flow. In the afternoon visited the rift between the American and European tectonic plates (walked to a lookout where we were standing on the cliffs edge of the American plate looking over the valley of the rift to the mountains marking the beginning of the European plate on the other side) and saw a waterfall and some wonderful view there. Finished the day by visiting some Icelandic horses and relaxing in the "hot pot" (outdoor bath) in the evening.Okumaya devam et
