Driving into the mountains

We picked up a car in Beppu and drove into the mountains, where we stayed that night in a village called Takachiho. Fortunately they drive on the left so it was no bother, although the twisty roads were quite scary at times. We hiked up the mountains in Aso, getting a great view of the volcano spewing its fumes everywhere. Unfortunately there was too much volcanic activity for us to get any closer. We ate dinner in a traditional Japanese izakaya, or a pub where you sit on the floor in slippers.Read more
