Kobe day 1

Arrived to Kobe on the Shinkansen all jetlagged and tired, had a wander around the harbour then took a bus to get a gondola up to the herb garden. Saw some of that, had a beer, then hiked back down via a waterfall. Went out afterwards for some incredible and expensive Kobe beef.Read more

Beppu and Oita for Wales v Fiji

Having learned some Fijian chants ("bula bula" and "doso Viti!") in the Fiji bar, we left for Kyushu to head to Beppu where we were staying in order to go to the match in Oita. Unfortunately Wales won but it was a pretty good game anyways.Read more

Driving into the mountains

We picked up a car in Beppu and drove into the mountains, where we stayed that night in a village called Takachiho. Fortunately they drive on the left so it was no bother, although the twisty roads were quite scary at times. We hiked up the mountains in Aso, getting a great view of the volcano spewing its fumes everywhere. Unfortunately there was too much volcanic activity for us to get any closer. We ate dinner in a traditional Japanese izakaya, or a pub where you sit on the floor in slippers.Read more

Takachiho gorge and Fukuoka

After we got up, we walked to the nearby gorge. It was lovely. Unfortunately the water was too high to go boating down it. We then drove onto Fukuoka for the game on the Saturday.

Fukuoka - Ireland v Samoa

After having a big night out in Fukuoka to celebrate not having to drive any more, we woke up late, had a bit of food and dragged ourselves off to the match. Ireland won comfortably but Bundee Aki controversially got sent off and ended his tournament. How that was a red and the Samoa one was only a yellow is a mystery that science has still not found the answer to.Read more

Kumamoto for Wales v Uruguay

So I didn't go out the last night as I felt ill. Connor on the other hand... Anyways, we got the shinkansen to Kumamoto to see another game, this time Wales v Uruguay. Uruguay played well but didn't quite have the legs to overcome the Welsh. Fortunately, Scotland and Japan were playing later on in the evening, so we somehow managed to cram outside the fan zone and watch most of the game. It was electric, Japan proving the winners and winning group A. We went out after that, ending up in a Welsh-packed karaoke bar belting out Delilah and other classics!Read more

Hiroshima day 1

We arrived later into Hiroshima, a bit worse for wear after our encounter with the Welsh! I went for a walk to the Pokémon Center, where they were selling Hiroshima Carps-themed merchandise with a Pokémon twist. The Carps are their baseball team, the Japanese love baseball! Later we went for the local speciality, Okonomiyaki.Read more

Hiroshima day 2 and Onomichi

We got up early for a tour around the Hiroshima Peace Park with a local guide, Yoko. She told us a harrowing story about her mother's experience as a 12 year old when the bomb was dropped and how she had to help look after her classmates, many of whom did not survive. It was very moving. We learned about the Atomic Dome, a building near the epicentre of the bomb that survived, and about how the city was rebuilt. It was fascinating albeit very sad.
We later caught a train to Onomichi where we were staying, and took a gondola up a hill to see some temples and shrines.Read more

Cycling around the islands

We got up early, hired bikes and took a cycle along a well known cycle trail. All in all we cycled approximately 40km, including stopping for a swim and some lunch! We cycled over a few bridges. We also sampled the local delicacy - lemon ale. The area is famous for its citrus fruits.Read more

On our way from Onomichi to Tokyo, we spent the afternoon in Nagoya visiting Japan's rail museum. We got to drive a shinkansen simulator! It was a good way to break up a long journey.

Went for ramen at a place recommended by someone at the hostel, then had a walk. Up early tomorrow to check out a bit of Shinjuku and go to a whisky distillery in the afternoon.

Fish market, rollercoasters and beer

Our trip to the distillery was cancelled as there was a landslide to the west of Tokyo stopping all the trains, so we took a trip to the big fish market in Tokyo and had possibly the best sushi I've ever had. Then Connor wanted to check out this big rollercoaster here in Tokyo - I don't really enjoy them so he went on it a few times whilst I pottered about. We both went on the log flume though, despite it not being the weather for it. Unfortunately there was no photo at the end to have in our Loko shirts, although my eyes would have been shut anyways due to the fast descent! We picked up a few beers, went for dinner with Connor's uncle then stopped back via a little bar for a few whiskies - we had the Hakushu whisky we would have had at the distillery.
