  • Lisbon...

    19. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We transited from Porto to Lisbon (3 hours) yesterday and not much to comment on. A very tricky ( read stressful) time to find the correct train station. Even the locals couldn't figure it out, so we were lucky in the end.
In our society now, with electronic booking and tickets, it's pretty much impossible to find someone to ask for help. Thank goodness for members of the public being happy to step up!
A wander around the local area and a supermarket shop followed by the best chef in Lisbon, preparing a home cooked meal, finished the day ( and a $5 bottle of Rose!).
I am taking a bit of adjustment to the number of smokers here. They don't vape very much, but it's like NZ maybe 15 years ago. The place is on fire, and smoke is everywhere.
A walking tour around cbd of Lisbon today in nice 20-degree weather. This requires a metro trip of 30 mins and a line change....which happily went smoothly after yesterday's confidence crash in my Google skills.
Dare we try to go even further afield tomorrow? Check in to see what happens next!

  • Sintra day trip x Lisbon

    20. maj 2024, Portugal ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

Back on the train and metro...successfully!
A day trip to Sentra along with half of the population of Germany, Italy, and Asia. Trains were packed both ways.
A must-see, though, very scenic and picturesque. Amazingly, I passed for over 65 ( who needs the gold card) to bring entry prices to merely extortionate levels.
With single lane roads, I thought it was quicker to walk, which probably didn't go down well with my team....a bit of a climb to that castle on the hilltop. Well worth it, though.
Tip: Don't travel on metro in rush hour... I counted 10 people in about 1.5 sq m. There may have been more!

A quiet day wandering around our suburb. It transitions from low socio-economic houses to the highest restaurant in Portugal in about 1km. Stadiums, events centre's, science museums and an Aquarium just down the road, and mega stores of course.
Traditional suburb shop fronts are tiny but frequently open to large department type stores out back, very deceptive.

    23.–26. maj 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

A day and a half wandering the old Jewish quarter of Cardoba. Very scenic and a manageable number of tourists.
Temperatures mid to high 20s in the afternoon and shops shutting 3 to 6 pm. Siesta time, so when in Spain.....
Loved this place with its mix of old and new, and cheap 🍷!

  • Cordoba in the Sun...

    24. maj 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

A day just cruising the district. Nothing special on the agenda. Googled our way between some highlights, which is working brilliantly. My skills are next level now!
We even checked in by Bluetooth to this apartment, which went smoothly once we realized we were on 1st floor, not second! Every place, booking, has a different system it seems which requires upskilling. Thank goodness we're using a Spanish sim with oodles of data available.
Very impressed with the hydraulic engineering in the Roman baths. They used the smoke discharge from the furnace (heating the water) to heat all the floors and walls via ducts under the floor. Not bad for 30 BC.
We're learning a new skill, studying bidet 101. ( sorry, no pictures) We've been horrified they don't like flushing toilet paper, instead providing a bin. Bidets are common, so grudgingly, I have put butt to seat. Enough said.

  • Cordoba to Seville

    25. maj 2024, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

A day moving house (2 hour bus ride, 2.5km walk, 30kg luggage, 32 degrees)...and a bit of domestic stuff.
We're probably going to have some noisy nights here as we're only 50m from a very busy plaza, as you can see. The video is taken at 10.45 pm. Many are only halfway through their meals.
The Seville Mushroom, shown cost €86m to build , 2005- 2011 and is the towns biggest attraction, 1m visitors/ year. €15 to walk around the top of the thing, 26m up.
Our screenshot of a conversation below is from checking in today. They write one line and send. Note; less than 2 minutes overall...the problem being I just start replying and they send another line... a bloke let us in, but he wasn't supposed to...apparently, so the lady (Vero) was quite put out.
Had our evening stroll in t shirts, 27 degrees. Awesome.

    27. maj 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Well, I didn't take any photos of churches yesterday, so apologies for no post!
A couple of days doing a wander around. A flag loyalty ceremony created a bit of extra drama at the Plaza Espana with some army hardware on display.
Some interesting shops to browse but only a single purchase due to upcoming weight (15kg) limitations.
A full brass band just passed by our window, full noise at 10pm. There's no point in going to bed before 11 pm around here.
The Alphonso Hotel was memorable. A long list of dignitaries having stayed there including Charles and Diana. See the caption if you want to book the cheapest room; €550.
I love the way they are happy for you to sit at a table well after you've finished coffee or a meal, and relax. I literally have to go and ask to pay, even at the Alphonso.

The good news is we didn't get tickets to the cathedral. The bad news is you get pictures of bridges instead.
This one's rather cool, though, although it did take 34 years to build (1793), replacing one that previously collapsed. That would be terminal!
    Fun fact:
In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, a mob threw 500+ fascists sympathizers off of the bridge into Tajo Canyon. This event was immortalized in Ernest Hemingway's novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls.
A bit of walking up and down hills for a change to get the views and escape bus loads of tourists.
Moving on to Malaga tomorrow, a 1 hr bus trip so a quite day by the time we get to another air bnb.

  • A meander through Malaga

    31. maj 2024, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

It was a lovely day for a stroll, just short of 20k today but at a leisurely pace, interspersed with Spanish cuisine and ice cream!
Opted to stroll rather than guided tours and enjoyed the quiet of a walk to the hilltop overlooking the city.
The market was a highlight (as usual), but we managed to only walk away with an assortment of nuts. Took a lot of self-control, though.
The beaches are packed with pale Euro people all trying desperately to get sunburned. They should come to NZ: we can get burned far quicker. We've not really improved our tan even though outside every day.
Saw our first car accident yesterday, A very nice Porsche got rear-ended. Amazing, we haven't seen more. The margins are tight!

  • Burgled in Barcelona

    3. juni 2024, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

In 2009, Barcelona was the pickpocket capital of the world. Apparently, things aren't much better today.
Joanne was removed from her wallet while we transited by metro from the airport to city in a crowded metro. Slick operators, we didn't see a thing and were separated a few meters at the time.
The good news is they got some cash and cards, but we blocked them straight away, so no extra withdrawals, it appears.
It turns out we didn't need to be on that line either. Blimmen Info lady really stuffed up and sent us the wrong way.
There's not a lot of stuff worthy of photography lately. Joanne's covered the food stuff. Yesterday was all transit and time with the Police. Btw they had 15 or so others, all with stolen stuff, just at the local station. One poor Ukrainian young guy had his pack stolen off his back with everything in it. So maybe we got off lightly.
A walking tour of city sights today as per photos. Then we jumped back on the horse ( metro actually) to get home again. Thankfully, there was no drama this time after reading some tips on how to avoid pickpockets.
Travel tip; Don't trust people giving you advice. In Spain Info people just want to move you out of the que! We walked about 2km fully loaded cos of bad advice, my Google was way more accurate.
