    No, unfortunately, it wasn't booze. We were checking out the views at the Montjuïc Castle above the city, and a b*****d seagull let rip. Joanne's of the opinion that it had been on an avocado diet, you can imagine the rest. Helluva mess, got 4 of us, but Joanne and I took the brunt of it.
    Wandered all around but didn't bother going inside many of the big ticket items. Actually, I didn't get a lot of choice in some cases as you have to book 4 days plus in advance. We weren't sure we'd even be here!
    Enjoyed the waterfront and the preparation for the America's cup. Saw someone testing a boat way out to sea, very fast with 3 chase boats. It's pretty impressive even from a great distance. Missed getting an invite to Alinghis black tie night for some reas6n.
    I wouldn't swap Wangamata for Barcelona beaches...even with the odd topless bird thrown in. Crowded, no waves, dirty cigarette butts everywhere, and the sand looks like it needs replacing! Still hugely popular though.
    Should have been some awesome water falls/ fountains around the plaza Espana and Olympic stadiums, but they're turned off for maintenance. Bugger.
    Travel tip; if it's worth seeing, it's expensive and you'll need to book ahead, by days if not weeks. Then enjoy the crowds. We mostly didn't bother.    Leia mais

    Our first Glam camp of this trip. Vivid memories of the rutted clay track to access.2Common as but Impala are always beautifulNot the best example but indicative of water on tracks at Nairobi Park1This Black Rhino is recognizable due to her long horn, unusual with poachers historically.1The bull buddy, 3 - 4 ton of muscle.1Not a lot of giraffe at Nairobi National Park, but you can see the city in background.This railway bridge, many kilometers long runs across Nairobi Park, fully suspended, Chinese builtNairobi downtown, pavement reverted to dirt and rubble, 2 blocks from cbd.     Kenya Safari, Nairobi and Amboseli Camp

    As you can see, the footprint is growing.
    A good flight to Istanbul and just a 3 hr layover before onwards to Nairobi. A slow customs process unfortunately took us 1 1/2 hours to exit airport, but an awesome hotel soon had us putting that behind us.
    We transferred to Nairobi Park Tented camp, just 6km or so from the city, which has experienced 2 months of unusual wet weather. The mostly clay tracks were a 4wd experience in themselves, next level for most guests arriving at 2am, as remainder of our group experienced. We're now 4 couples strong on a 22-day safari through multiple game parks.
    The wildlife is as we remembered, but we've already experienced different things from our trip here 12 years ago. As usual, photos don't begin to do it justice, so if you like them, you'd truly love Kenya.
    A walk through the Downtown (poor) part of Nairobi ( Nairobbery) was an experience, a privilege, and an education. No social welfare here, no refrigerator ( for example) for these people, and 60% unemployment in youth. I hope NZ doesn't go any further down this path of rich and poor extremes.
    Posts will be rare as the internet in the outback is very limited.    Leia mais

    Porini Amboseli Camp, Kenya

    We're 30 minutes of flight time sth west of Nairobi, and the weather here is dry, 15 to 30 degrees approx. It's winter, and the dry season has just begun. ( Nairobi has been experiencing climate anomalies this last 2 months)
    We're now a group of 4 dairy farmer couples from Cambridge experiencing eco tourism. This means tourism with protection of the environment as the priority, so campsites can be moved with no residual impact or observable changes on the area. Three course meals are the norm, with drinks all inclusive on a prepaid basis. I wouldn't say it's 5 star, but it's a comfortable four.
    Monkeys sharing the shower water probably limits the review upside, but it's a fun experience.
    Game drives commerce with a 30 min wake-up call, and you're out on the tracks, eyes peeled by 5.30 - 6 am, pre sun up. Back for breakfast at 9 am or, as in the case yesterday, an 11 hour round trip game drive to Amboseli National Park with views of wetlands, elephant, and wildlife, and Mt Kilimanjaro ( background).
    Plenty of time to harangue the guides with mindless tourist questions and endless banter about all manner of things.
    The only problems are a lack of internet ( bare with us) and trying to pick your best representation of photos.
    Would love to send more video clips ( internet limited) as these can reflect the proximity and scale better often imo.
    We'll be changing camp every 3 days, due tomorrow. Each camp has a cross section of wildlife but typically a strong feature animal. Elephants are this camps drawcard with a group of 90 crossing a road in front of us yesterday, a real spectacle.    Leia mais

    Parini Ol Pejeta Conservancy., Kenya

    Porini is the name of the company operating the camps, btw, and the conservancies you'll probably find on the internet, there's quite a bit of a story behind their establishment.
    Wildlife is again in abundance, although a couple of highlights are unavailable due to previous wet weather, unfortunately. Not short of animals to view and search for, though.
    My better efforts are on my other camera, which i have to download at home, so I'm just putting up a taster!
    It's quite cool here as we're getting a breeze off Mt Kenya, but don't be worried for us. After noon are still t shirt Temps. Last two days are 6am wake up, depart game drive 6.30, picnic breakfast, back to camp at 1pm for lunch.
    Free time 2 -4pm, a cuppa then game drive until 6.30 -7pm ( drinks in the park somewhere).
    Dinner at 8 (always 3 courses) and bed when you're ready.
    Internet continues to be poor, so we don't know what we've posted, so cut us some slack for errors!    Leia mais

    These guys quite partial to Zebra, leaving very little for Jackel and Hyena
    Big males have been elusive but we finally caught up with a couple in our last days in Kenya.The local tippel, celebrating our arrival in Arusha, TanzaniaFood Markets, ArushaBags of produce up to 100kg loaded onto shoulders for relocation. No forklifts.The chook sales shed, a bit tough.Piles of produce stacked to overflowing.Welcoming committee at Tarangere Park, TanzaniaElephants are numerous here, and in no hurry. Roadblocked us a couple of times today.Spot the lions; Awesome close ups on other camera you'll have to wait for.5Now in Baobab tree country, pride of lions loved it too.Today, elephants, a pride of Lion posing 4m from the ute, and this fully fed chick hanging out.Bit of a que getting into Tarangere Park. Our driver did really well here.Darn I got some dirt in my eye.

    Kenya to Tanzania

    We finished up our stay in Kenya with awesome viewings of dinner with Lions. Most of the killing is usually at night, but we found them mid way through dining twice! Add to those two leopard viewings in two days. We're extremely lucky as the leopards haven't been seen for months due to having litters.
    A last day at Porini Lion Camp was quite (relatively) and we transferred back through Nairobi to Arusha, Tanzania. Staff guided us brilliantly through a rabbit Warren at the domestic airport, dodging visiting children who had never seen a plane on the ground before.
    A night in a beautiful old hotel reminded us of times pre bucket showers and seemed pretty luxurious.
    On safari now a couple of hours by 4wd out of Arusha we'll have just one driver during our 8 days viewing of different parks.
    We've two vehicles, one with a dicky radiator cap, and the other with a short in the horn causing it to sound when turning. Quite alarming for the wildlife and us, and not what you need around elephants. ( and illegal in game parks)    Leia mais

    Tarangere lookout: for monkeys!
    Mto wa btu village, communal banana/ rice farm and carving shop.A day off school means doing the washing.Cute kids but primitive living conditions. Just paying for water systems to houses. Communal toiletsEating and cooking and Red banana, tasty too!2I kept promising you'd get a close shot...... but how close is close enough?I had to check our driver wasn't backing up...Serengeti Lion kill. Lions 1, Cape Buffalo -1.All that's left of previous buffalo the next morning, post Lion, Hyena, and Vultures.This is an e.g. of congestion in national parks while viewing a leopard. No off-road driving allowedWilderbeast at water hole. Watch video for what happens next.The reaction when a lioness breaks cover...Crested Crane, a personal favorite.The road from Ngorongoro to Serengeti Western corridor is like this, and worse. A full days drive.

    Tarangire to Serengeti

    A couple of big days driving (8am - 5pm) over some character building roads. I'm glad I'm not on a bike.
    We've a different system in Tanzania where the guide stays with us for 9 days, and instead of flying between parks, we're driving. Definitely see more this way, and it's worth it, but quite tiring. Speeds are limited practically to 60km/hr and a dental check to see if you still have your fillings probably recommended.
    A stop at a Community Banana farm was great to sample local products, grab a local lunch, banana beer, bag some rice to help a local farmer and back on the road.
    Wildlife experiences are plentiful, and this trip proving even better than our last. Same animals but different activities, e.g. feeding, parenting, etc.
    We've only 1 day of game driving remaining in our trip, and it will be time to head home. A lot of hours are needed to sift through photos, but that will extend the memories.    Leia mais

    A warm 29-degree last day with a few more firsts ticked off: elephants crossing a river, Wilderbeest en mass just starting their migration, crocodiles waiting for an early Christmas.
    Great hilltop accommodation provides awesome views, but unfortunately, they're mid burn off of thousands of acres, so things are a bit hazy. ( part fire control, part pasture management for the wildlife)
    That's it from me. We break camp at 7.30am for a 1hr drive to a dirt airstrip, flying to Arusha, Nairobi, Dubai, and Auckland Saturday morning.
    If you can turn the heaters on please....I only do warm weather from here on!    Leia mais
