Day 45 Uluru

450k from Alice Springs to Uluru. Headed off about 7am and arrived Ayers Rock Campground about midday. Filled up at the Shell Uluru, $2.06 per litre for diesel, the most expensive of the trip. The queue at the campground reception was chaos, line out the door and down the road, only two of the four terminals operating and very slow. Took us one hour in the queue. We have since heard others have waited 2 hours. We have booked the “Sounds of Silence “ dinner departing from the front of the campground at 4.55pm. We were there at 4.55pm but nowhere did it say go to the bus stop down the road. By the time we got to the bus stop we didn’t know if the bus had gone or not. No numbers to ring or any contact details provided. 5.30pm another bus tells us our bus left at 4.55pm. They organised another vehicle to take us out there ( it appears this is common). I was not a happy camper at this stage. We got dropped off and walked up the hill to the drinks and Canapés. The only beer was Hahn mid strength. My experience is not getting any better yet. At least the view of Uluru and the sunset was very good. Headed down the hill for dinner and things started improving. There was a didgeridoo being played as we were seated. The red wine was ok but the food was fantastic, crocodile, kangaroo, lamb, barramundi and lots of it. Meal finished we had a lights out stargazing lecture. It as actually really good. It is the first time I have been able to identify the “Dark Emu” in the sky. Back to the tables for dessert and port then bus back to the campground. After the rocky start it ended up being a really enjoyable night. Arrived back at caravan about 10pm. Apart from the chaos on checking in the caravan park is very spacious and the individual sites are quite large. Heaps of room for caravan, awning and vehicle.
