  • Gothenburg, Sweden

    Sep 23–24, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

I spent a night in Gothenburg where I caught up with a friend, Sam, whom I met months before in Krakow, Poland. It seemed like a nice city but it rained the whole time I was there and I got into an argument with the airport bus driver who refused to let me board with my ticket. Police were almost called before the situation was resolved, though I never got an actual apology from the driver.Read more

  • Guadix

    October 11, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

An hour north of Sven's ranch is Guadix, which is a good place for train and bus connections. I took my first Blablacar from here to Cadiz, but I had half a day to explore the ancient city first.

  • Hadas del Sol (Faeries of the Sun)

    Oct 11–18, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

So.... I had heard of this global community called Radical Faeries. It seemed a little disturbing at first and I avoided it. In the last few years I've discovered some really nice friends of mine are part of this community. While travelling with a friend in his campervan through Europe we spoke more about it and he got me to look up Hadas Del Sol's website, the Spanish community. They were holding a gathering at the same time I expected to be in Spain. I joined them for a week at their Elementary, my dear Emma Watson gathering. It was magic! There are almost no photos except for when we went to a lovely beach, and also from our "No Talent Show" where I helped manage the stage, lights and music, in drag! I even auctioned off a lap dance as a fundraiser for their next gathering. It was embarrassing but fun. 😆Read more

  • Rome, Italy

    Oct 23–24, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

One night and a day in Rome on my way to The Balkans. The Colosseum was much cleaner and whiter than my last time here. Like every trip to Italy this year, it was raining a lot.

  • Skopje, North Macedonia

    Oct 26–29, 2024 in North Macedonia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

The capital of North Macedonia is an interesting city with some interesting traditional foods. In 2014 the city installed a lot of statues all around the city centre. Unfortunately over time they showed to be made from fake marble and poor metals and are already deteriorated. Weird things like pirate ships and trees in the river were included. It is considered the most kitsch city in the world.Read more

  • Budva, Montenegro

    Nov 3–4, 2024 in Montenegro ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Budva is a nice coastal town in Montenegro. I had a nice walk around their beach and into the Old Town. Old Town had a nice feel to it as I made my way through the small stone alleyways filled with shops cafes, bars and restaurants. The sun was setting as I left casting much of the city in a molten orange. In the evening I met with Alen, a local from Podgorica. We went up to a beautiful old but well kept monastery in the hills surrounding Budva, then Alen took me up to a lookout above the ex-resort island of Sveti Stefan for some wine. Budva was aglow from there. The lookout is based at a place that 200 years ago a monk painstakingly made stone steps from the sea level to this side of the mountain.Read more

  • Kotor, Montenegro

    November 4, 2024 in Montenegro ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Kotor reminds me a little of Queenstown in New Zealand. A beautiful lake surrounded by majestic mountains. I passed through it on a 9 hour bus trip from Montenegro to Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina. I really wish to visit it again and kayak in that lake.Read more

  • Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina

    Nov 4–7, 2024 in Bosnia and Herzegovina ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

Sarajevo and all of Bosnia Herzegovina that I've seen so far look beautiful in autumn. I got myself an Airbnb for a few nights so I had some space to work on a presentation for a job interview in Germany at the end of the week.

I met Alex from China who spoke so many languages, including Slovenian and Italian. We went for a "Boiled Wine" (see photo) and then chatted until late.

Sadly half of the businesses on Google Maps didn't have accurate opening hours and weren't open when I showed up. Half the places that were open only took cash. It's strange as until this last year I hadn't used cash in nearly 20 years! I wasn't going to get out some Bolivian Marks for a couple of days so it even took longer to find a restaurant or cafe that would take Visa or MasterCard.

One afternoon I turned up to a walking tour and there was no one there. I used the time to go shopping for a warm jumper and a jacket to prepare me for heading into single digit temperatures in Munich and London at the end of the week. I can't believe I've been travelling with only a backpack with summer clothes and a rain jacket for 8 months now!

  • Munich, Germany

    Nov 7–8, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

I spent one night in Munich. The next morning I gave an hour and a half presentation and interview for a programme manager job at a German company. It's the fifth interview I've had with this company that's doing some cool things in the Customer Experience area. I caught up with Rosen while I was there.Read more

  • London, UK

    Nov 8–Dec 8, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

I've finally come back to London. I lived here for most of my 20s and half my 30s. My last few years there were awful, and after their atrocious riots in August 2011 I resolved to move back to New Zealand for a better quality of life.

I'm staying with Craig, a friend I've known since kindergarten, and his cool Honduran wife Maria, their 9 month old Great Dane puppy, Dinky, and their fish, reticulated python and tarantulas.

  • Beijing, China

    December 9, 2024 in China ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Breaking up my flights from Europe to New Zealand, I had a stop over in China's capital. Lots of websites and apps don't work here, and Google Maps is pretty useless, but it's an interesting capital city to visit and navigate.Read more

  • Auckland, New Zealand

    Dec 10–18, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I arrived back in New Zealand, exhausted after only 4 hours of sleep over the last four days of travelling around half of the world. It was lovely to be back home in summer, seeing old friends, family, spending time at beaches, and seeing how my bio daughter had grown.Read more

  • New Plymouth, NZ

    Dec 20–23, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I bused from Auckland to Hamilton then from Hamilton to New Plymouth over 7 hours to stay with my dear friends Janita & Neil and their kids Fletcher & Jasper, whom had been through quite a year. Paul & Kelly were fun as always to see, and Rachelle and hers and Paul's parents were also down and lovely to catch-up with.Read more

  • Family Christmas in Palmerston North

    Dec 23–26, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

My family gathered at my younger brother's home for Christmas. I managed to get a ride via a Facebook community group, a modern take on hitchhiking, to get from New Plymouth to Palmerston North. I spent a lot of time entertaining my nephew, "being silly" with him as he likes to call it. Santa costume was essential. We saw the Palmy Christmas light show, an annual event, on one of a couple of the streets there. It was so nice to beRead more

  • Wellington and Home

    Dec 26–30, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

My parents and I travelled from Palmerston North for our family Christmas to enjoy some days together in Wellington at my apartment. It had been the first time there in nearly a year. We spent some time giving it a thorough clean and hanging up all the artwork that hasn't been replaced since it was painted months earlier. We walked to a new local Mexican restaurant for dinner one night and I discovered some lovely walks around Mt Vic with my neighbour and her dog.Read more

  • Auckland

    Dec 31–Jan 8, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

I spent a week in Auckland catching up with old friends, and seeing Bailey (my daughter), sleeping on a bunk bed, visiting beaches and Rainbow's End amusement park.
