    Travel Day and War Museum

    August 9, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Travel day, then arrived at the hotel, checked in and set off for the War Museum. First Danish Pastry was a Cardamom Knot! Had fun there learning and doing some of the hands on exhibits!! Experienced life on board a navy ship. Then Hard Rock Cafe for tea 🎸

Amazed how many bikes there are in the city (none locked up!) and also that Netto still exists here 😂 Also tried Reindeer Jerky (tastes like bacon!) 🦌

  • Round Tower and Boat Tour

    August 10, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Started the morning with a trip up the Round Tower which was interesting (I can now say that Hans Christian Anderson and I have sat on the same toilet!)

Then on a Hey Captain boar tour round the canals which was interesting. They've created an incinerator with a ski slope and climbing wall attached, a classic example of Danish functional architecture! Also saw the old town, Opera House and the fancy bit of town by the canals as well as going past the Christiana border.

Saw some green kayaks coming past, the kayak hire is free but you pick up rubbish in the bins to use them 🙂

  • Lunch and Afternoon

    August 10, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

Went to Torrehallerne Food Market in the Meat Packing district which was great. Had traditional Smorrebrods (open sandwiches), plant based liquorice marshmallow cake, potato cake (amazing!) and some amazing fresh blackberries. The fresh fruit and veg. was incredible, all the tomatoes were so colourful! Then walked back via the Lego shop, Joe and I did come souvenir shopping and stopped to watch the Pride singer for a minute 🙂Read more

  • Jeff's Birthday trip to Sweden

    August 11, 2024 in Sweden ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Trip over the sea to Malmö in Sweden!

Started the day with a stop at Espresso House with a rhubarb juice drink, Joe had a cardamom bun and I had a real Swedish Oat ball (we love these from IKEA and I've made them at home!) Walked round and saw the sights, St Peter's Cathedral (including an exhibit on faith in football!) and then went to Saluhall food market for lunch. Traditional Swedish meatballs and not so traditional ramen for us 🙂

Then went to explore Malmö castle and the Castle Street Gardens (Slottstrådgården) where we saw some lovely flowers. It's all manned by the community and they have allotments there too. Lovely to walk around!

Then got the train back and out for pizza later 🙂

  • Bus-y day 😎🚎

    August 12, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Sightseeing day using the hop on hop off bus routes! Started the day by walking to the iconic Nyhavn canal and buildings- very pretty and apparently inspired by Amsterdam! Then on the bus loads of different spots, most famously a quick trip to the Little Mermaid statue. 🧜‍♀️ Then back on the bus for a view of the Royal Yacht and to the Church of Our Saviour to buy tickets for later.

Hopped onto the other bus route to Reffen food market, which had loads of amazing food!! So much to choose from but we went for Parmesan fries (Joe), Duck confit cheese sandwich (Joe) and African chapati (Helen) 😋 All amazing! Back on the bus and stopped off at Freetown Christiania for a quick wander before tackling the 400 steps to the top of the Church of Our Saviour tower! You go up steps on a spiral on the outside of the spire which is amazing (Joe made it to the top for which I am super proud!!) 90 metres high and a stunning church and view from the top! Then back to the hotel and American style BBQ for tea!
