• Alaska ride day4. Watson lk - haines jct

      6 Jun 2022, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

Didn't cover as many miles today as I'd hoped but enjoyed the company of Al and Jim for another day amd should still get to fairbanks tomorrow with an earlyish start.

Probably only did about 380 miles today but saw some great scenery and stopped for an hour at signpost forest. I have also encountered the famous Yukon mosquitos... there are billions and billions of them. The second I stop my bike they swarm around me, climbing into my helmet, up my sleeves, down my jacket. And they're huge, a couple of times I've found myself wondering whats dripping down the back of my head only to realise its my blood from where a big mossie has got me!

Had a great time in the middle of the day, waiting for the pilot car to take us past the road works we collected about 20 other bikers, all at the front of the queue. So once we were allowed to go we had a huge group of bikers all riding together through the gravel, so much fun!! I'm getting a huge amount of appreciation for skippy, everyone else is on big adventure bikes, Africa Twins or BMW GS's. One group even came up to me and said "huge respect for you doing this ride on a little 500 duuuuuddeee... thats awesome"... I felt like a proud dad next to skippy 😂

Ride with Jim and Al all the way to their sisters and then used her Internet and phone to find accomodation for tonight. Didn't use it though as it looked like a dump and the place up the road was $20 more but actually looked good, so I voted for that one.

    • Alaska ride day 3: Pink mtn- watson lake

      5 Jun 2022, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This road is incredible, it has taken the top spot on my all time favourite roads list (not a real list, but if it was this would be top).

The road itself is pretty uninteresting but the experience of riding it is insane. A combination of the views, the vastness of the country, the wildlife, and even just the loneliness makes it such a mind blowing experience. Where else can you find a road that takes 5 days to drive, where you have no phone signal (everrrrrr!!!!), you set off in the morning tackling 100 miles at a time, nor knowing where the next fuel stop is or where you'll sleep that night. Its terrifying and exciting all at the same time.

The views today were extraordinary. Heavy rain this morning eventually cleared to reveal a backdrop of the northern rockies, lakes a bright blue from the minerals (sulphur??) And so much wildlife!!! I do however have a new rule for bears. No more stopping to take photos of them, much safer to just keep riding past! I've been warned they can be pretty unpredictable out here so best not to chance it by shoving a camera in their face! They're also mich bigger in northern bc than southern!

On the one hand I don't want this road to ever end, on the other hand I'm looking forward to the comfort of civilisation... in the meantime I guess I've still got 3 long days of riding before I get to another proper town or city!

460 miles done today. Sunset was 11.15pm... thats just getting silly.

    • Alaska ride day 2: Edmonton to Pink Mtn

      4 Jun 2022, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Holy shit is this country big. Once you hit the Alcan Highway the traffic dissapears and you quickly find yourself on your own surrounded by trees and straight road.

Occasionally the road lifts and you get a glimps over the trees only to realise that it's just more trees for hundreds and hundreds of miles. Pretty much everything above Dawson Creek is just untouched forest.

Rode 503 miles today and found some riding buddies who are going to whitehorse so we're riding together and staying in the same hotels etc. Nice to not be alone out here! It's a pretty lonely place!

Accomodation for tonight is in Pink mountain. Its basic but they have a restaurant serving a few home cooked meals - you dont get the luxury of looking around other restaurants out here!. (WiFi was down so I'm actually writing this the day after). Room was $125.

    • Alaska ride day 1: Calgary to Edmonton

      3 Jun 2022, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Skippy was ready to go early which was great news as it meant I could get going a day early and cover a quick 180 miles which means I don't need to do the big 540 mile day tomorrow! Now just 360 which is much more pleasant!

So I grabbed my free t-shirt and stickers from the bike shop and hit the old dusty road.

Calgary was a boring place, Edmonton is worse (kinda like Reading if it didn't have the nice Riverside area). The ride was disgustingly boring between the 2. Just motorway, no views, no corners. And as such... no photos. So here's my 1 photo of calgary and a picture of my pint of Guinness that I'm enjoying while I write this.

Tomorrow takes me to the start of the Alcan Highway! The journey begins!!!! 😁😁😁

    • Riding in the rockies

      1 Jun 2022, Kanada ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

Day 1: Banff - Revelstoke - new denver
Day 2: New Denver - kaslo - balfour - kootenay Bay - creston - Cranbrook- Fernie

Didn't take nearly as many photos as I should, but the roads and views were outstanding.

I met Pat on the Balfour ferry, were heading the same way so rode together for the day and found a camping spot in the rockies. He spent all evening insisting I eat his food, drink his beer and sit in his chair... I didn't put up much of a fight.

Temperatures seriously dropped overnight down below freezing and it became pretty clear why the thicker more expensive sleeping bag that I didn't buy because I wanted to save $15 might not have been a terrible purchase.

Great to ride for the day with someone, he's put me in touch with a friend of his (Ian) in calgory that I'm now in touch with. He's sorted me out some heated gloves and a few other bits I needed and he's buying me dinner tomorrow... he was annoyed at himself for not having anough space at home to give me a bed for the night 😂

Ooohhh also we saw a moose... well Pat saw a moose, I missed it... but that still counts right??

Tonight I'm eating a veggie burger with a side salad. No meat, no chips, no grease... the most green thing I could find on the menu! Still a burger though!

    • Sandon

      31 Mei 2022, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

A little 10 minute dirt ride off 31a from New Denver takes you to an old mining town, burnt down twice and washed away once... there's not much left but a collection of the old buses (some of the first electric powered vehicles in the world), the old train, a few ropey buildings and the oldest working hydro mine in Canada. The town is slowly bring turned into a museum but at the moment it's just 1 room of museum and a lady called Vida selling shitty coffee from a hut.

Sandon however is pretty cool, all the money from the mine meant the town grew hugely in about 3 years and after the mine was dried out the town basically disappeared 20 years later.

This was meant to be a half hour stop. Vida talks... it took 2 hours.

    • Banff, lakes and mountains

      28 Mei 2022, Kanada ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

Spent the day hanging out in Banff, took a little drive out to a few lakes and went up the gondola to get a view of the mountains... everything was bloody massive.

Last night was music bingo at the hostel, it git very boozy, today's hangover was pretty brutal. Not helped by the fact that someone was fast asleep in my bed when I went up. So had to sleep a couple of hours in the women's dorm and then get up and out at 5.30 before anyone saw me. Early night tonight!Baca lagi

    • Ice Fields

      27 Mei 2022, Kanada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

What a day!! Couldn't feel my hands for most of it, it was so bitterly cold! And yet it was exactly what I wanted from Canada (despite the clouds ruining the views).

Riding from Jasper to Banff takes you through the ice fields and they are pretty incredible, I captured more on my go pro as my hands were too cold to stop and take photos.

Today I rode with Pat from NZ and we also met Nick early on so we spent the morning riding together. They were basically the 2 most interesting people I've ever met haha. Especially Nick who stil rides his 50 year old Moto Guzzi (120k miles on the clock!) Around the world. My favourite thing about Nick is that he gave me a murray mint haha!

They were both very prepared and had heated gloves... Pat even had a heated vest... I had a scarf and wanted to cry most of the day.

    • Ride from Kelowna to Jasper

      26 Mei 2022, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Thought this would be a cold one... it wasn't 😂 I was far too over dressed!

Felt amazing to get back out into the mountains though!! I didn't take many photos as I was just enjoying myself.

Arrived at the hostel and got chatting to a chap from NZ called Pat. He's on an Africa Twin and has riden from alaska down. Tomorrow we're going to ride through the ice fields together. Wahoooo a bike friend!!! 😂😂

    • Kelowna

      25 Mei 2022, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Nice few days in Kelowna (which I think might be the nicest town in Canada!) Big fancy houses, big lake with beaches, loads of nice bars and breweries!

Hostel was great, just like a student house really 😂 but really social and good fun for a few nights. A Mexican guy there had a hot space made from the 4th hottest chilli, I tried it... I shouldn't have done, nearly killed me!

Spent my birthday evening at a bar and got a ton of recommendations for roads and places to see in the mountains, they also had a drum kit set up so the bar staff and I played some tunes (badly) 😂. I went back a couple of nights later for their jam night 😁

I used my birthday money from mum to hire a jetski for an afternoon on the lake which was incredible! Where else can you jet ski with a view of snowy mountains?!?!
