Delhi to Agra

Today we drove from Delhi to Agra. On the way out of Delhi we went to Qutub Minar which was an observatory tower built in 1199 and is a UNESCO world heritage site. We then got to Agra and did Agra Fort, which was the fort to protect Agra and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There were lots of school kids there when we went. Finally we ended at Fatehpur Sikri which was a walled city and was the capital of the Mughal Empire. Once again another UNESCO World Heritage site.

The highlight of the day was seeing the cow in the Rickshaw.Read more

So far, Jaipur is favorite city we have been to and I think the photos can explain why.

Truly such an incredible city and we only have been here half a day. Today we did more things downtown like the Jantar Mantar which was a sun dial, HawaMahal which was an air palace that had some beautiful views of the city, and the City Palace which is where the royals of Jaipur still live! They have been there for centuries and are similar to the British royals but just for the city of Jaipur.

These are just a few of my favorites, I took 500 photos alone at the Taj Mahal today so probably took around 1,000 total today.Read more

Once again I truly just love Jaipur! A beautiful city with so much history and the palaces and forts are incredible. What i find interesting here is the palaces have multiple palaces like summer, winter, and monsoon in one place when other places have them more spread out. It seems much more efficient in the way India has done it.

We also got to feed and ride an elephant today which was super fun. I learned bananas and sugar cane are an elephants favorite. We also ended up in a block print company which is where I got the blue elephant and I got to press it.

In Varanasi, we had some fun adventures. We started our time there in Sarnath which is a very holy site for Buddhism. It was amazing to see so many old sites, and just extensive history here. It’s said that Buddha is buried on the site we were at in 5 different places.

We ended the night at McDonald’s to try Indian McDonald’s which is somewhere Vedant and I used to get snacks from in college. Here they have actual working ice cream machines.Read more

We took the day fairly easy today. We spent the day by the Ganges and took a boat ride. Then since it was hot went back to the hotel and rested a bit then came back out for the evening ceremony on the Ganges. We had an early wake up call the next day to get to the temple at 3:45.Read more

Had a big morning at the temple today but no phones allowed. Beautiful temple here devoted to Shiva. This evening we flew back to Mumbai where I’ll be for 5 days before heading on to Amsterdam! Time has flown and I am super excited for the next few days of Diwali!

The snack pictured here was made similar to how a funnel cake is made. It was super good.Read more

Today Shrutis sisters came over for a big meal at the house! The thing I’ve learned about this holiday is it is focused on family spending time together and each day is with a different family member basically. It works out well for us as most of Vedant’s family lives in this building, so it’s easy to get around.

In the evening we went to Sanjeev’s sisters house for dinner and that was nice too! A nice way to celebrate my time in India. Tomorrow is my last day here before my Amsterdam departure.Read more

Final day in India included some last minute shopping for gifts and a final McDonald’s trip! It feels like 2.5 weeks went by fast, but I am excited to begin the trek home.

Vedant’s family has been so kind to me while I’ve been in India, they were incredible hosts and i got to see the country in a way many people don’t see it. While India was tiring, it was a great experience!Read more

Buisness Class Upgrade

This morning I was able to upgrade my flight from economy to Business Class for $430 for a 10 hour flight. Flying Business internationally had been a dream of mine, so I did it.

I was able to get a solid 5 hours of sleep and the food was great! Although I’m tired of Indian food, they had good options. I got expedited lines through the India airport as well, which was good because you have to go through immigration when leaving the country and that line was over an hour due to the holiday and cricket World Cup.

My favorite part about the flight was KLM gives you a ceramic Amsterdam house when you fly business class with them! 30 minutes before landing i got to pick my house out.Read more

Carlos and I are honestly both tired. Carlos came in from a 10 day Vietnam Trip, and I’ve been on the road for a while now.

We are staying at Sir Albert’s which is a Marriott design hotel. It’s not a typical Marriott, but it’s been amazing! I surprised Carlos by having a bottle of champagne sent to the room to celebrate our first international trip just the two of us.

We decided to wander around the city today, we walked a lot, and stopped for a beer by the Anne Frank house and wandered back.

Our room was ready when we got back and we slept for a few hours which was good for both of us. Collectively the two of us have been through 4 time zones in 3 days, so we really aren’t sure what time it even is at this point.

We have a big day tomorrow planned and excited to see the city! So far it’s beautiful!Read more

This morning we got up early for our tickets to see the Anne Frank house. We decided to wake up at 8 since the tickets were at 10, and walk the canal and get breakfast. We stopped at a bagel place near the house. When we were there I checked the tickets, and it turns out the tickets were for 9! I had to get the tickets 6 weeks out so I was super worried we wouldn’t be able to enter, but they let us through without issue.

The Anne Frank house was super cool to see especially since I just finished reading her diary when we were on the ship. It provided a unique perspective into how people hid during those times. Such a sad ending to the story, but it’s good it had been preserved.Read more

Tulip Museum and Cheese Museum

The Tulip Museum and Cheese Museum were right across the street from Anne Frank House and both were awesome spots.

The tulip museum was $5 to enter and talked about the history of the flower and how it came from the Himalayan Region. It was originally a gift for royalty. We also learned 1 tulip bulb can turn into 4-6 bulbs the next season. The one you buy in stores is the main bulb from the 4-6. It takes a few seasons to get the bulb large, and we learned the bulbs grow more when the flowers are cut, so some farmers here cut down all the flowers.

The cheese museum was also a fun stop, it was a cheese store with a museum underneath, and while it was no Smithsonian it was free and fun. We tried lots of cheeses here.Read more

Body Worlds and Afternoon Wandering

After the museums, we went to Body Worlds! My parents took me there as a child and I wanted Carlos to experience it too. It’s an exhibit with bodies doing different things and you can see the impacts of certain habits on the body.

We wandered back to the hotel after this and found a fish and chips bar and stopped there. This was the first meat i had eaten since Australia and so I wanted to start easy with some fish.Read more

Our first Michelin Star Restaurant! This was a recommendation from Shawna and Tom and it was fantastic. We had a 13 course meal that had Dutch influence. We opted to do prefix so we could try things we wouldn’t normally order. It was such a great experience and if you’re wanting to try a Michelin star place this was fantastic. The Heineken Experience was super fun! While I’m not a huge beer drinker, it was really well done and showed the process of how to make beer. We learned a lot about Heineken and how it got its international debut at the Paris World Fair, and how even during the Great Depression, the company did its best to pay their employees fairly, and even created a fund for struggling employees for extra financial help.Read more

Today after Heineken we headed to the Rijksmuseum. Originally I planned to do the museum district in one day and it was much better we didn’t do it like that. The Rijksmuseum is a large museum similar to the louvre so it can be pretty overwhelming. We saw some super famous pieces there, and had a fun time wandering around. With my love of Van Gogh this has been a super cool city to spend some time in. We learned that the Rijksmuseum has over a million artifacts, but only have 8,000 on display.Read more

We booked this on Viator (an app for booking tours) and it was such a fun find! It was only $35 for unlimited wine and a plate of cheese! We went through the canals and got a tour as well from a local guide. This was one of our favorite things we did!Read more
