    A large garden area half of which is occupied by Jardim Braancamp Freire (Campo de Santana), with the statue at the end honoring Dr. Sousa Martins and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon, which occupies the site of the old bullring.

    The other half is a quiet park area with fountains and filled with a real variety of birds

    The statue, Dr José Tomás de Sousa Martins, was a doctor renowned for his work amongst the poor in Lisboa. After his death, a secular cult arose around his personality, in which he is thanked for 'miraculous' cures, due to his tireless work with charity and his trying to help the most disadvantaged; his figure assumed contours of a saint, which can be visible in the ex-votos placed around his statue.
