Parroquia San Marcos

The church of San Marcos de Salamanca, is a Romanesque building that is located in the area of ​​the old city wall in the Puerta de Zamora

It was built in the late eleventh century and was intended to be a parish. It is unique for its round plant and its small size (around 22 meters in diameter). The building was the headquarters of the Royal Clergy of San Marcos

In spite of being circular in the outside, the interior of the church does not present the typical centralized plant of the circular churches, but it is divided in three naves finished in three apses, like a basilical plant

There are data from the year 1200 by which King Alfonso IX of León had given this parish to the association of the clergy, which was called Real Clerecía de San Marcos.
