    The Arch of Fernán González is a triumphal monument erected between 1581 and 1587 on the initiative of the City Council to honor the memory of Fernán González, the first independent count of Castile (932-970) on the site where his residence was located in the former Calle Tenebregosa (current street Fernán González)

    There is a cartouche with a Latin honorific inscription, attributed to Fray Luis de León, surrounded by the shields of Castile and Leon and Burgos, translated from Castilian says: A Fernán González, Count of Castilla, the greatest caudillo and defender of his time, progenitor of great kings; to his compatriot in the place of his house by public initiative, this monument stands for memory and everlasting glory .
