• Bergen - Day i

    8. joulukuuta, Norja ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Quite a busy day considering we were just having a wander round Bergen…

We went looking for the old town and passed by * Nykirken which is a beautiful church built in the 1620’s viewed in a previous visit but sadly not open today.

We carried on up to the Nordnes Gardens with views over the harbour and the statue
Krigsmoderen (The Wartime Mother) commemorating the mothers struggling to protect their children and homes while their husbands were away during 1940-45

Coming down and along the harbour we took the Beffen Ferry across to Bryggen, this is a fabulous little service that’s been in use for over 150 years

We stopped for refreshment at the Statsraadden, alongside the ferry and then tried to see the * Rosenkrantz Tower, closed, built in the 1270’s it is considered the most important Renaissance monument in Norway and was the residence of one of Norway’s most significant kings, Magnus the Lawmender, in the 13th century

After which we carried onto Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, is a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century

Today only some 62 buildings remain of this former townscape, which is now a World Heritage Site

Ooooh, mustn’t forget the Eider Ducks which came charging over and diving at the harbour end…fabulous!

We wandered here and made some purchases, including Lainey’s Christmas present (…luckily she doesn’t read this!), the pieces are from the ‘Historiske’ collection and is based on silver from the Arctic North, including pieces from the middle ages. Juhls historically refers to Juhls Silvergallery in Kautokeino, founded by Frank and Regine Juhls in 1959, as Norway's first silversmith, known for preserving and further developing Sami kofte silver and traditional jewelry with a personal touch for the community

Then a quick Hansa in O’Connors before heading over to Bergen Julemarked for småretter og varm sjokolade…yum!

…and back to Scandic Torgat and bed!

    * Note: we found out culture is: Stengt Mandag og Tirsdag !
