  • De Syv Søstre (The Seven Sisters)

    5 de diciembre, Noruega ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Long before humans settled the land, the mountains and valleys of Norway were the domain of the trolls. Powerful troll kings, Suliskongen and Vågakallen were among them, but both leaders struggled to control their young.

Suliskongen had seven beautiful daughters. Though they were trolls, they were unlike any others. Each sister possessed a unique beauty and a distinct personality, yet together, they formed a striking sight as they wandered the coastline.

Their father was very protective of them and forbade them from wandering too far from home after dark. Suliskongen sent his seven daughters to the maiden of Leka, Lekamøya, known for her wisdom and beauty, so she could turn them into responsible young ladies.

One evening, after a long day of exploring the coastal cliffs with Lekamøya, the seven sisters lost track of time and found themselves far from home. The moonlight shimmered on the water, and they couldn’t resist the temptation to take a swim. However, they were being watched.

The son of Vågakallen, Hestmannen, had left home and was looking for mischief. He had long harbored a secret desire for Lekamøya. That night, he had wandered the coast when he saw her and the sisters bathing in the moonlight.

As dawn approached, he set off to capture her. The sisters fled, but Hestmannen closed in, preparing to shoot an arrow to stop Lekamøya. The troll king of Sømna intervened, throwing his magical hat to block the arrow. Although this initially protected Lekamøya and the sisters, the emerging sunrise would have the final say

The Seven Sisters were caught by the light. In an instant, they were turned to stone, frozen forever in their flight.

Hestmannen, still chasing after them, was forever fixed in the shape of a rider looking south towards the sisters. Lekamøya made it as far as the county border and now stands on an island in Trøndelag.

The magical hat, which had fallen to the ground with the arrow stuck in it, was also turned to stone. Today, this hat is known as Torghatten, a famous mountain with a distinctive hole piercing through it, a reminder of the fateful arrow that once flew through the night sky.

Vågakallen still sits high up in Lofoten, unmoved, gazing out over his northern realm

Torghatten is further South and although we pass close by unfortunately we don’t actually see it from the ship so I have utilised the Internet

  • Brønnøysund

    5 de diciembre, Noruega ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Arrived Brønnøysund a quiet place so a simple wander along the harbour to the ‘Walking Bridge’ and return through the town.

A bit of window shopping and a picture of their Christmas tree

Located in the geographical centre of Norway, being 840km from both Nordkap and Lindesnes, Brønnøysund is also the beginning of the Coastal Road

It’s a sleepy little town on an archipelago, but the surrounding nature is beautiful

Torghatten is located here, this is where the Troll King of Sømna threw down his hat to protect the Seven Sisters

After a four course dinner, I had beef cheeks - yummy, we’re now off to the Captains Soirée, whatever that entails!?

  • Bergen

    7 de diciembre, Noruega ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

We have now arrived in Bergen and I’m now penning this from our room at the Scandic Torget Hotel

We have two days here, leaving on 10 December, and looking forward to having a wander round Bergen, Christmas shopping, the Funicular (Fløibanen), which takes you up the Fløyen, some 320 m above sea level and not forgetting a visit to Bryggen,

Brygen is a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century. Many fires, the last in 1955, have ravaged the wooden houses of Bryggen but its rebuilding has traditionally followed old patterns and methods, leaving its main structure preserved, which is a relic of ancient wooden structures once common in Northern Europe. Today, some 62 buildings remain of this former townscape. The old wharf of Bergen is now a UNESCO World Heritage site

  • Bergen - Day i

    8 de diciembre, Noruega ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Quite a busy day considering we were just having a wander round Bergen…

We went looking for the old town and passed by * Nykirken which is a beautiful church built in the 1620’s viewed in a previous visit but sadly not open today.

We carried on up to the Nordnes Gardens with views over the harbour and the statue
Krigsmoderen (The Wartime Mother) commemorating the mothers struggling to protect their children and homes while their husbands were away during 1940-45

Coming down and along the harbour we took the Beffen Ferry across to Bryggen, this is a fabulous little service that’s been in use for over 150 years

We stopped for refreshment at the Statsraadden, alongside the ferry and then tried to see the * Rosenkrantz Tower, closed, built in the 1270’s it is considered the most important Renaissance monument in Norway and was the residence of one of Norway’s most significant kings, Magnus the Lawmender, in the 13th century

After which we carried onto Bryggen, the old wharf of Bergen, is a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century

Today only some 62 buildings remain of this former townscape, which is now a World Heritage Site

Ooooh, mustn’t forget the Eider Ducks which came charging over and diving at the harbour end…fabulous!

We wandered here and made some purchases, including Lainey’s Christmas present (…luckily she doesn’t read this!), the pieces are from the ‘Historiske’ collection and is based on silver from the Arctic North, including pieces from the middle ages. Juhls historically refers to Juhls Silvergallery in Kautokeino, founded by Frank and Regine Juhls in 1959, as Norway's first silversmith, known for preserving and further developing Sami kofte silver and traditional jewelry with a personal touch for the community

Then a quick Hansa in O’Connors before heading over to Bergen Julemarked for småretter og varm sjokolade…yum!

…and back to Scandic Torgat and bed!

    * Note: we found out culture is: Stengt Mandag og Tirsdag !

  • Bergen > Tre’r-Ddol

    10 de diciembre, Noruega ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

All good so far we got the bus early at 08:35 and to airport in plenty of time which was spent in the Avinor Lounge. We’ve just boarded so fingers crossed everything on time cause we’ve no time at Frankfurt!

Tucking into Smoked Salmon Fillet with Grilled Parsnip, Lime Cream and Apple Chutney followed by Plum Crumble with Vodka & Coke - Yum!

So now we’re through Frankfurt and onboard our flight to Birmingham. A nice uneventful journey watching ‘Monster - The Ed Gein Story’, I don’t think it’s meant to be funny but it has its moments - highly recommended

We finally made it home to a fantastic greeting from Cere and settled, eventually, to Fish & Chips, from Howdens - Yum, again!

    That’s all folks…
