    11月25日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Well a really lovely day the sun is shining and we’ve been wandering round enjoying a beer and a Gammel Danske, ‘Old Danish’ a traditional Danish liqueur similar to Jeigermeister, after which we wandered over to the Christmas Market and had a really excellent tasting of Salmon and Cheese, thankfully not together, before toasting in front of a log fire with a hot chocolate…fabulous 👍

Now relaxing at the ‘Scandic Toreg’ after a shower ready for a quiet night…tomorrow we head off to sea!

  • Depart Bergen

    11月26日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 4 °C

Another lovely day wandering around Bergen and discovering old and new places. Relaxed with hot chocolate and coffee at the The Café Opera, a lovely little Cafe/Bistro we visited on our last trip.

We have now arrived on board and enjoying a glass of Champers and nibbles before we head off to dinner later

At 20:30 we went up on deck to see our departure and a brisk wander

Have added map of our route South of Arctic Circle

  • Alarm call from Lainey…

    11月27日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Apparently Lainey hasn’t adjusted her watch so thought we only had 25 minutes to get breakfast!

We called in at Florø and Måløy last night and just leaving Torvik these are simply collection stops so no time for shore leave, now heading for Ålesund where we stop for just over 10 hours so will get out and about

Incredibly smooth trip so far and so quiet although some open sea last night so a little bit of rock’n roll!

  • Ålesund

    11月27日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Arriving at Ålesund to be greeted by a Hooded Crow inspecting the lifeboats, apparently they’re AOK!

Off into Ålesund for a walkabout before lunch. It’s very quiet and peaceful, it must be lovely to live surrounded by so much natural beauty. Haven’t bought anything yet but I’m sure it won’t be long as there’s a lot to be said for Scandinavian style and design

Up on deck after dinner as we depart, Ålesund it’s quite mild at 5* so a tour of the deck and back for a coffee and bed, early start tomorrow in Trondheim

  • Trondheim

    11月28日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

During the night we called in at Molde and Kristiansund but now heading for Trondheim expecting to be there for 09:45, we depart again at 12:45, so shall be busy!

The sunrise this morning was as fabulous as any sunset you could get, it was so mild but many people feeling the cold!

Arriving at Trondheim we crossed paths with Hurtigrutens Polarlys on her return journey back to Bergen

The Cathedral (Nidaros Cathedral) here is superb, completed in 1300 and is the traditional location for the consecration of Norwegian Monarchs. Very beautiful and totally worth a visit. On the way you go by the Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro) which dates back to 1681, is also known as the Portal of Happiness and said to have witnessed many marriage proposals over the years

The ‘flock’ of birds are common eiders, large sea ducks found along northern coastlines the males (white and black plumage) and females (mottled brown plumage) can be seen in this group, highly social birds, often gathering in large flocks or "rafts" like the picture, especially during winter and migration periods

Heading back to the ship we had lunch followed by soaking in the jacuzzi as we departed Trondheim

  • Journey to Bodø

    11月29日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

During the night we called at Rørvik, Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen, Nesna and Ørnes before we get to our next walkabout in Bodø at 13:05.

However just after Nesna we will have entered the Polarsirkelen, 66*33’N. This means we undergo crossing the Arctic Circle Ceremony!

…and there we have us being granted passage by King Neptune and the Captain and Lainey and I, after the Arctic Circle Ceremony, enjoying our well deserved reward. Later I saw Lainey and I going through the ceremony on the lounge screen!

We have received news of unsettled waters which may be interesting so staying longer at Bodø, although most of our journey is protected using inner channels occasionally we venture into open waters

The mountains along the coast are majestic and quite forbidding making the towns at the waters edge look very vulnerable

  • Bodø

    11月29日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Arrived here at 13:25hrs, again quite mild so we headed off for the centre, the days certainly aren’t getting any longer and we already feel like evening is approaching, realising it won’t be long before we don’t get any sun at all!

We head off along the harbour path heading for the Bibliotek. With views over the harbour it’s said to be the library with the best views in the world, believable! Bodo was also a European Capital of Culture, 2024, and this is an example why

After a wander we returned via the Cathedral, it’s really plain from the outside but is quite beautiful inside hosting a 10 metre stained glass window and the tower, it has to be said, is ‘different’. Unfortunately they were preparing for a concert so no admission!

We return in complete darkness and head immediately for the jacuzzi…fabulous!

We will be leaving here a little later than originally set due to expected weather in the open waters, dinner has also been brought forward, ominous!

Have added map of our route North of Arctic Circle

  • Off to Tromsø…

    11月30日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

We were expecting a tough time but actually it wasn’t too bad, when we left the Jacuzzi at 16:05, it was mild and a slight breeze but by 17:15, we were in the middle of a real storm

We, happily, slept through most of it and at one point Lainey heard the call for an Aurora and headed out but it was only a little one. Later there was snow, quite thick and fast, but little remains onboard this morning

We’re on our way to Tromso, expecting to be there for 14:15, and have missed out 5 stops only calling in briefly to Sortland, Harstad and Finnsnes , having had a delayed departure from Bodø

Calling at Finnsnes to all accounts we looked as if we would hit the berth, phew! After a short stop we head off again for Tromsø on the Gisundnet heading under the Gisund Bridge. A very majestic bridge it is 1,147 metres long and opened in 1972. Shortly after this we pass along quite narrow channels, the scenery is really beautiful…Christmassy!

We have 4 hours in Tromsø and will be aiming to visit Magic Ice, Roald Amundsen Plaz, The Art Café and Nordnorsk Kunstdmuseum it

  • Tromsø

    11月30日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌨 -2 °C

We pass through the narrowest of channels going intoTromsø and it looks amazing with the Arctic Cathedral lit up on the right, although fabulous we have been before.

We landed in light snow and headed to Tromsø Cathedral (Domkirke) which, I believe, is the only wooden Cathedral, this is in a Gothic Revival style from 1861, I think this is a fabulous building, before wandering the main street toward what turned out to be the Polar Museum which was quite interesting, more so than I’d thought

On our way back Lainey wanted her picture in the sleigh and with an old friend, who we happened to meet…me, I wanted a drink ‘in’ the Raketten Bar, the smallest bar in the world, but the queue was horrendous, and not many seats left, so we headed to Magic Ice instead and enjoyed a glass, or two!

Back to the ship just as it really started to snow but sadly too late for the jacuzzi before dinner!

    Next stop Honningsvåg…

  • Rock’n Roll

    12月1日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 0 °C

What a night quite heavy seas with lots of crashes thundering through the ship, luckily most of this after we’d retired for the night. At one point a cupboard released its contents and it was only this morning we realised a glass water bottle had broken. How Lainey managed to walk through it to put the light on is unbelievable, it was all over the floor!

Soon be at Honningsvåg, expected arrival 10:55, for just over three hours

Seas calmer now and just starting to snow!

No pictures as were surrounded by mist but thought I’d add the fish rack taken earlier

Norway's fish racks are called ‘hjell’, which are wooden, often pyramid-shaped racks used to dry unsalted cod (stockfish) in the cold, dry air. The racks are placed along the coast and are essential for the drying method, which uses wind and a low, near-freezing temperature to preserve the fish over several months

  • Twilight…?

    12月1日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 1 °C

Honningsvåg is experiencing polar night, meaning the sun does not rise above the horizon. Instead of traditional sunrise and sunset, there are periods of twilight, the duration and timing of which change daily.

For today, November 28, 2025, the approximate times for twilight are:

•. Dawn (start of civil twilight): 8:40 am
    • Dusk (end of civil twilight): 1:28 pm

During this period between dawn and dusk, the sun remains below the horizon, but there is a faint light (civil twilight), often described as a "blue time".

  • Honningsvåg

    12月1日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 1 °C

Honningsvåg is a small Arctic town and the gateway to North Cape (Nordkap) but our challenge, well my challenge, here was to find a shop so I could buy Hot Chocolate and, hurray, we succeeded

We also wandered the Main Street and went to the Nordkap Museet. The Museum was really good well laid out and somewhat interactive

Snowing quite heavily, by UK standards anyway, and quite thick in places, which is lucky ‘cause Lainey decided to have a really close look and needed to be helped up!

We ended up at The Christmas Shop, everything you could want for the special day, except baby Jesus, however Lainey managed to find cookie cutters so all right in the end!

Got back with our goodies but sadly the Jacuzzi was closed off, maybe something to do with the snow!

  • Voyage to Kirkenes

    12月1日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 2 °C

Honningsvåg is behind us and during the night we have a further six stops, all less than the hour, before reaching Kirkenes, the furthest port on our Coastal Journey

We started the journey in the Jacuzzi, you can see snow in the background, and endured until we reached Kjøllefjord and now having a quiet time, catching up with FindPenguins, before dinnerもっと詳しく

  • Kirkenes

    12月2日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌙 -11 °C

Arriving into Kirkenes and this is as light as it’s going to get it’s also the coldest so far, actually -11*

The Memorial is to the soldiers of the Red Army that liberated South Varanger during the fall of 1944, after four years of German occupation.

We took a wander into town and ended up at a cafe where we enjoyed ‘varm sjokolade og ca’ or, as we know it, ‘hot chocolate and cake’…yummy!

Heading back to the Nordlys we’re convinced the temperature has dropped considerably so grateful to get back and partake…!

We depart Kirkenes at 12:30 to start our return to Bergen

Take Note: Here you have a picture of the midday Moon, well 12:45 anyway!

  • Checking our Itinerary…

    12月2日, ノルウェー ⋅ 🌬 -4 °C

Now we’ve left Kirkenes behind and turned back to the South, already at 13:35 it’s pitch black and you really feel you should be thinking about bed!?

Most of our stops on the return are short, in fact there’s one a day lasting anything from 01:00 to 02:15 hours. Hammerfest is our stop tomorrow for 01:45hrs

The photos are just out from Kirkenes showing the mist on the Barents Sea

  • Kirkenes to Hammerfest

    12月3日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ -3 °C

We enjoyed our dinner last night celebrating our completion of the North bound journey and the start of our return

We pulled into Batsfjord for about 30 minutes and were amazed at the Gulls, never seen such numbers at night

We’ll soon be in Hammerfest, this is where we joined The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, which you can only join in person at the Polar Bear Society

In the photos you can see where the Sun is hiding below the horizon, and where it will stay, and then the Moon in the other which will continue to rise. Although the Moon looks tiny it is in fact much bigger than you see at home, beautiful truly!

  • Hammerfest

    12月3日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ -6 °C

The ship, video, sounds it’s foghorn just before to alert the longshoremen of arrival and secure the mooring ropes, this is also traditional with Hurtigruten

Arriving at Hammerfest it was really cold, apparently on the same latitude as Northern Siberia at 70’39’48” and described as, …lies on the boundaries of human existence under Arctic conditions’

Hammerfest is the home of ‘The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society’, of which we are members and I was at last able to replace my lost patches and Lainey said hello to her friend before we set off to wander the town

The Protestant Church symbolises the Holy Trinity and also the traditional drying racks. The mural, pictured, is actually from St Mikael Kirke and is the northernmost Catholic Church

A nice Christmassy feel to the town which is so nicely understated, unlike the UK where we start in October!

Attached is the official position re Night, Astro Twilight, Nautical Twilight and Civil Twilight…commonly known as day/night and in the charts it simply says:

    Sun: Down all day
    Moon: Up all day

  • Journeying to Stokmarknes

    12月3日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ -5 °C

Well we managed to grab the Jacuzzi again and enjoyed watching the moon in the snow, very romantic…

Dinner in an hour so relaxing in our cabin with a drink and checking what’s on!

So tomorrow at Stokmarknes there’s the Hurtigruten Museum, said to be well worth the visit and it’s close to harbour so perfect then, when we depart there at 15:15hrs, the perfect touch Lainey has just discovered another Magic Ice in Svolvær, the next port, so we’ll be making a move on that, for sure, when we arrive at 18:30hrs

Hoping for Aurora Borealis this evening so fingers crossed people…

  • Risøyhamn

    12月4日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

It’s quite incredible to see these mountains covered in snow and then to see the lights at their foot, it’s hard to believe people live in these conditions

We’ve just reached, Risøyhamn and announced our arrival, a very quick stop here for a couple of disembarking passengers and cargo

The bridges here are so elegant and we made ourselves popular, again, by disturbing the Eider

*Just discovered there’s a 100 NOK entrance fee for the Hurtigruten Museum, I think this is disgraceful when you put against the cost of the trip itself!

  • Sortland

    12月4日, ノルウェー ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

On the way we pass under the bridge where the returning excursion coach passes over at the same time, and timed so we ‘meet’ in the middle, tradition has it we celebrate the same moment waving flags and sounding the ships horn…

Our stop here at Sortland is simply to collect the passengers, who departed the ship at Harstad for the ‘Taste of Vesterålen’ excursion, to rejoin us at Sortland

This is the spectacular Trollfjord it’s the narrowest part of our journey and, at night bearing in mind where we are, it’s ominous

During this we enjoyed a Trollfjord drink with special mugs, and travel into a very narrow stretch where we have to turn about to continue onto Svolvær

Lainey had already noted what she thought might be ‘Lights’ and within 15 minutes we were given a superb showing of the Aurora Borealis, I can’t believe how they’ve turned out on an iPhone!
