Blessing in disguise

Imagine you finally reach your pilgrims' refuge after 40km of hiking, your trousers and shoes muddy and filthy, your feet heavy as stone, your stomach empty and your body longing for a warm shower...Just to get to know it only opens from the 1st April (in the App they mentioned the 22nd of March so I trusted this info).

Luckily, some people standing in front of the pilgrims' hostel helped us to find something cheap. And even more luckily, I met another pilgrim from Romania on the last 10km who is now sharing the room with me. 🙏Lue lisää

After yesterday's adventure, I am starting today a lot calmer.
Fixed my sleeping place for tonight (plus dinner) already in the morning, had a long breakfast with (rock-hard) bread and a delicious cup of coffee prepared by my roomie and only started my hike around 11 😁Lue lisää

My Bestie would have loved this part of the Camino so much - small streams, footbridges and idyllic cottages with beautiful gardens.

First stay in pilgrim's hostel

Today's distance was not that long but still demanding. Got my first blister from the last 2 days and there were again some steep ascents, especially towards the end. 😵‍💫
Arrived pretty late in the refuge and was so grateful for a warm shower and a pilgrims' menue (13€ for 4-course dinner!)
My highlight: These huge, juicy and sweet strawberries 🥰🍓Lue lisää

Honestly, this morning I was in a really bad mood.
Someone was snoring in the 6-bed room, the group of frenchmen in my room had set their alarms in 15-minute intervals starting from 6am- without getting up, my head was throbbing, my stomach already screaming for food and my feet hurting like hell.
Still, I left the shelter without breakfast to already win some kilometers.
My aim was the next bigger town where I planned to eat something and - most important - to have a strong coffee.
However, as you see from my pictures, the Camino was a bit of an asshole during the very first kilometers...which did not exactly lift my spirits.Lue lisää

As planned, I stopped in Larrabetzu for a breakfast (Pintxos & a muffin) and my beloved americano.
When I bit into what looked like a muffin, I saw the liquid chocolate core 😍 The ones who know me will understand why this small "Lava-Cake" really made my day 🥰Lue lisää

The art of distraction

Funny how a 20km march can feel like a walk in the park with the right companion!
Yesterday I got to know Udo from Germany in the refuge and, as luck would have it, our paths crossed again in the tavern where I enjoyed my breakfast!
We decided to walk together for a couple of kilometers and before we knew it, we reached Bilbao. The actual 20km distance did not feel like that at all since we were talking all the way!

Thanks for making the 2nd part of my day so pleasant and thanks for sharing this fantastic "Menú del día" later in Bilbao (3 courses plus a bottle of redwine for 17 €!)Lue lisää

Bilbao is a lot more beautiful than I thought. And I really loved to cross it on my feet with some sunshine later in the afternoon 🌞

It took me a while to leave Bilbao although I walked pretty much to the west already yesterday. I really liked Portugalete with its long promenade along the river Nervión.

Vía Verde - Cyclists' paradise

After Portugalete my way lead me along the so called Vía Verde which seems to be especially built for cyclists.
This meant a long distance walk on concrete. However, I didn't mind. I managed to clean my shoes and trousers a bit yesterday and this kind of path, combined with the sunny weather today at least meant that yesterdays' efforts paid off.
Along the way I again got to see beautiful countrysides so I didn't even care that I was seeing the motorway all the time.

Clear recommendation for my parents (No worries, Mom, no steep ascents as far as I could see) 🙂Lue lisää

La Arena / Pobeña

I don't have words for this.
I met an old man on the Vía Verde who already recommended me to take some time to enjoy the village La Arena. And he was damn right.
When I entered La Arena, I got me a bottled Heineken (these guys here are really into Dutch beer 😅) and sat at the beach, only listening to the waves roaring and watching them move back and forth.
But when I continued my hike, I reached this path, framed by a wooden fence. It all looked like a scenery right out of a postcard. I couldn't see enough of this and I couldn't stop taking pictures 🥰Lue lisää

Staying in a hotel a bit abroad today since the standard distance to La Arena seemed a bit too short. They would definitely win the price for the ugliest bathroom furnishment in the world but I got a warm dinner, 2 more beers and a warm shower and am now falling to bed, totally exhausted.

After sleeping really well without any interruptions, I started hiking a bit earlier today. After walking another 2 kilometers along the coast, I reached Ontón, another lovely and idyllic village.

Finally having my well-deserved breakfast after hiking 14km 😅
It starts to become a habit for me to eat in the local bars since it is so cheap compared to Germany!
Also it is funny to watch the locals taking their first whitewine or beer while you are having your first bite of food of the day. 🤭Lue lisää

Last village before reaching our final destination.

Go hard or go home!

I already mentioned that I want to go beyond my limits but did not really expect this to happen in my first week. 😅
My hiking buddy has the ambitious target to reach Santander by Monday since he will fly home that day again. In the morning we were still laughing, thinking that the almost 50km are far from reality.
Well, as you can see, we made it and honestly I was not only physically exhausted but also I felt that my brain was really slow after that immense workout.

Finally, we found a good and cheap sleeping spot in a monastry. I even have the luxury of sharing a 2-bed room with a girl from my hometown Halle 🙂Lue lisää

Today is supposed to be sunny - finally!
Additionally, my trail started directly along the coast on a beautiful promenade. 🩷

Also, I ran into a Spanish journalist who was trying to take a selfie (and I was trying as well in the same moment). So we ended up taking pictures of each other and talking a lot (in Spanish 🩷) and exchanging contacts.
She is such a lovely and warm person- I liked her from the very first moment!

After passing the long promenade of Laredo, I had to take a ferry to get to the next stop: Santoña.
Definitely worth a visit, especially Playa de Berria.
