    Bye bye LEJ!

    March 22, 2025 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

The day of my departure has finally come.
For me, a big dream is coming true.
I will walk the Camino del Norte, approximately 850km along the northern coast of Spain completely on my own.
No duties, no stress, no distractions - just me, my backpack, my 2 healthy feet and many impressive landscapes.

I am looking forward to discovering all the beauties of the Camino, to meeting other pilgrims and to going beyond my physical and mental limits and I am happy to share my daily experiences with you.

    ¡Hasta pronto!

  • Surprise, surprise!

    March 22, 2025 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

Just managed to regain composure after saying goodbye to my partner when suddenly my bestie stands behind me on the platform to dismiss me. 🥹
Really did not expect anyone to come to the main station at 5 in the morning- especially not with the train from Halle!
You crazy thing, what a lovely surprise, made me start crying again ❤️

  • Bye bye FRA

    March 22, 2025 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

I heard a lot of jokes about my last name already but really liked the one of the spanish speaking check-in lady who pointed out that I will never forget the spanish word for bag (maleta) since it rhymes on Kaletta :D
    "Nunca vas a olvidarlo."

    Spain- I'm coming!

  • Perfect timing

    March 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

This is by the way basque for "You are welcome to enter but please close the door behind you so the cattle stays inside."
Almost took a wrong turn today, thinking I was not allowed to pass this door when a nice resident appeared just in the right moment to tell me that I need to pass.Read more

  • Camino oficial o alternativo?

    March 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

In the beginning of my hike I had to decide between 2 Caminos:
The oficial route which was described as demanding due to its steep ascents and descents but worthwile with its beautiful views.
Or the alternative route which was basically described as...boring 🤣
Indeed I am feeling this "Official Route" all over my body. But definitely it was worth to select the more difficult trail. The atmosphere is magic, the landscapes varied between forests, meadows, mountains and picturesque villages and behind each curve was another breath-taking view waiting for me.

  • Passaia

    March 23, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Romantic town situated on a river mouth.
Had to cross the river with a ferry (this is officially part of the Camino but this only made 200 meter or so 🤣).

  • The reward

    March 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

Today's leg started with another steep ascent in pouring rain.
Just when I reached the top of the hill it was stopping for a while so I could marvel at this view.
A true pity that pictures cannot transmit emotions, odours or sounds.
In this moment, there was just the sound of the seagulls floating in the distance, the roaring of the sea and the smell of salty sea water.
I absolutely do not regret the choice of my Camino!

  • My first lesson on hospitality

    March 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

After walking 2 hours through the rain without seeing a single person and jumping from stone to stone to avoid the huge puddles, I was really grateful to find a small shelter for pilgrims. There I was welcomed with a "cafecito", a warm toast and a warm chimney - all on donation basis.
Also, I made the acquaintance with an american guy who was painting below beautiful picture on the wall.

  • Zarrautz

    March 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

The majority of the pilgrims starting their hike in San Sebastián is finishing their day here.
From the beginning I said that I want to walk my own pace and make this my individual experience. And since I reached Zarrautz already shortly after lunch and still had energy in my thighs (astonishing after only 2 toasts 😅), I headed to Zumaia.Read more

  • So much for "taking it easy" 🤣😇

    March 24, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Hike-Day 2 and I added some kilometers compared to yesterday.
However, today I am not as tired as I was yesterday and the distance felt a lot shorter. But to be fair - today's leg had way less ascents than yesterday's and there were 3 cities inbetween so it never got boring.
Today I am treating myself to a Glamping-like bungalow. Since the Camino does not yet have "high season", many refuges are only opening in April (and again, I did not finish my hike at the typical spot). It was the cheapest place I found in Zumaia and at least, I have the opportunity to wash and to cook.

  • Necessity is the mother of invention

    March 25, 2025 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Me using every single bit the bungalow offered to get my soaking wet clothes dried (already hearing the heavy rain drumming against my window this morning 🤣).

Picture 1 - there is a heater installed opposite the window which is kind of "blow drying" my stuff.
Picture 2 - using the one way towel for drying the inside of my shoes...the dishes will somehow dry on their own 🤪
