Boarding has begun for overnight flight to Amsterdam 😜

  • Lazienki Park, Warsaw

    October 24, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

    Statue of Chopin
Every summer Sunday there is a grand piano next to the statue. Although buried in Paris, his heart was returned to Warsaw (smuggled back by his sister as Warsaw was occupied by Russia and he could not return home )
Statue was only completed in 1926 as Russians forbid it. It was destroyed by Nazis during WWII and rebuilt
    Island Palace
    Another kingly summer home

  • Wilanow Palace

    October 24, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Summer palace of King Jan III , eventually sold to a noble family, who were kicked out during the war and never given their property back

  • Ghetto Heroes Monument, Warsaw

    October 24, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

The irony here is my favorite part of the day!
The large, black marble stones here are from an order placed by Adolf Hitler, as he was planning to build his victory monument from it. Fitting that instead it goes to honoring Jewish heroes.Read more

  • Warsaw Uprising Museum

    October 24, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

What a fantastic place, for a bit of WWII history I knew nothing about.
Truly heroic men, women and children involved in this.

  • Auschwitz Birkenau

    October 26, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

I know why the entrance gate is such a popular photo. It's so difficult to take photos inside a death camp.

  • Kazimierz

    October 26, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

This is a historic district, on the outskirts of Kraków. There are six historic synagogues here, none destroyed during the war. Only two are in use still today.
This is also where Schindler's List was filmed, and the location of Schindler's factory.Read more

  • Schindler's Factory

    October 26, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

I thought this was going to be historical information on Schindler and what he did during the war. Instead, it was more a museum about Nazi and Soviet occupation of Kraków from 1939 through the 80s. There were some moving areas, like the room of quotes of people who helped others and people who did not take the chance. Otherwise, I think this could be missed.Read more

  • Wawel Royal Castle

    October 27, 2016 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Tour of the castle and Church. The church was amazing, along with the tapestries (Indiana Jones moment #1) in the castle. It is amazing to think that all these things were stolen, most often during the war, yet found their way back home. The tapestries hanging in the ballroom this time depicted Noah and the flood. In this rendition Noah saved unicorns and dragons, too.
    No photos allowed inside 😞
This castle was also the seat of local Nazi government during the war.
The Wawel dragon is also outside the fortress.
    Well worth the walk.
