Lynton and Lynmouth

We arrived in Lynton and had a fight with the parking meter. In the end we used the stupid Ringo telephone service which was significant stress we didn't need!
We then wandered over to the water powered railway. It was exactly as I remembered as a child! Right down to the green painted carriage and the staff uniform. We had to have a go. The view was amazing and Christo was really interested in the engineering and how it worked. It gave me great opportunity to take some photos of the scenery.
Down at the bottom at Lynmouth I was feeling very nostalgic remembering the village - right down to the shop on the corner where I bought shells. I had forgotten just how pretty it was. We wandered down a tiny high street past some old fashion shops and spent some time in the flood memorial museum.
We then went back up the railway and got the best standing views out of the carriage. The sea views were amazing! Then we found ourselves a cream tea and hot drink at a café called the Greenhouse.
Then we were back on the road again for almost five hours to get home. The M25 was not pretty but we had Jiji and Shelly ready to greet us when we got home. 🐢😺Lue lisää

Goodbyes and Fudge shop

After another night of not the best sleep in the hotel we went down to breakfast to have a final chat with the family and say our goodbyes. Jess and family had the same idea as us to hang around until 10am when Roly's fudge shop opened to purchase some goodies and thank you presents. It was really nice fudge 😁😋Lue lisää

Ilfracombe

We arrived in Ilfracombe on Friday after a few detours on route to collect a hang glider and drop off some car parts. We met with family in Wetherspoons for dinner and drinks. It was a standard Spoons with reasonable food and decently fast service.
Slept in a hotel a short walk (Britannia). I think we'd rate it as okay. The bed wasn't the most comfortable and there was no light inside the shower cubicle. Annoying the hotel has no car park, however if I hadn't been getting up to put money on the car I wouldn't have taken these photos of the harbour. It was really beautiful with the sun rising behind it. Seagulls were loud and scream - although you quickly get used to it!Lue lisää

Get Roasted restaurant

The family met for dinner at the restaurant I had booked this morning. It wasn't the best layout, however we ended up in the bar area as Alistair had wanted to bring his dog Baloo. Some of the tables were boosted high and others were low tables with sofas.
We had to wait an hour for food but considering there were 14 of us that was hardly a surprise. The food was very good! I really enjoyed my roast pork, especially the cauliflower cheese. I had strawberry gateaux for dinner which also was enjoyable. The bill was £367 in total which was paid for by the estate, I thought that was extremely reasonable! The party was held at Spoons again. The cousins were the last ones standing for a chat and a drink.Lue lisää

Pregnant statue

We arrived back in Ilfracombe and found an open cafe and had a hot drink and a cake. Christo and I played battleships because why not? After we had refuelled we decided to explore further along the harbour to find Damien Hurst's statue: Verity. Christo and I walked around the area for a while so I could take photographs. There also was a wonderful little church/light house overseeing the statue (Chapel of St Nicolas). It was really beautiful in spite of the rain.Lue lisää

Combe Martin beach

Although it was still raining we went for a walk along the beach for old times sake. The tidy was far out and we scrambled across some of the rocks. There were lots of limpet shells on the beach. We wanted a hot drink but couldn't find anywhere to go, so hopped back into the car back to Ilfracombe.Lue lisää

Planting of ashes part two

For 2pm in the pouring rain we arrived in Combe Martin church to plant the rest of the ashes. Hugh had arranged for a vicar to do a bit of a service for us. He had chosen a few appropriate readings and Psalms and then we all took turns in scattering soil on top. It was a fairly moving service and the complete opposite of what we had done this morning. Dad went to pieces which was no surprise. Uncle Phil seemed fairly emotional too.
Afterwards we went to 'The Pack of Cards' pub for a drink and dad made a roast. We stayed for an hour before making our excuses and getting away from the crowd with mum and dad.Lue lisää

Planting of ashes

After breakfast in the hotel we agreed to drive down to Landacre bridge to bury half of the ashes of Grandma Betty and Grandad Ralph. We arrived at 11am. Uncle Hugh had chosen this location as he knew that they had spent time here and taken all of us here in the past to enjoy the Moore's.
Great hilarity followed when it came to light that Alistair was supposed to bring a spade and had apparently forgotten (although he was yet to arrive). Christo dug through the car and found the most pathetic pink beach spade and a metal ground anchor. We made reasonable progress on digging a hole before Alistair finally arrived having gone via B&Q to purchase a spade! There was no ceremony to all this - but plenty of laughter and mockery.
Afterwards I took some photos of the three brothers and then the whole group at the bridge.
Afterwards we drove on to the Old Station House Inn pub for lunch prior to the church (I used to know this as the Railway Tavern years ago!).Lue lisää
