Honduras W/ Sonrisas Siempre

My second year going to Comayagua in Honduras with this wonderful group of dental professionals; dentist’s, dental pediatric and surgery specialists, dental hygienist’s, final year hygienist’s students from PFW, dental DR students from IU including 2 in their final semester and worker bee’s (me)

This is the 26 year for the group. It generally splits into 2 groups with one group working in the town and one group going to a different village in the mountains every day.

I found a notch last year sterilizing equipment. I was the only worker bee last year but this year there were several so I was able to train them to do my job in the city and go with the mountain group for one day. I mostly like my quiet little spot on the town operation but it was super interesting to get to see how mountain group works. It’s a totally different kind of dentistry, mostly just pulling a lot of really bad teeth.

In the town they care for a lot of orphans, students, folks who can’t afford dental care but because they have been coming yearly their teeth are in much better shape. The hygienists only work in the town. They also do some limited sealing and restoration work and as of last year de Ron had opened the door to work with the local hospital for severe cases needing anesthesia.
