Leave home - the adventure begins

The day of the start of our trip had been a good one - bright and sunny although a hint of rain in the air. Getting everything ready had come together well. Work was wrapped up in reasonable time. We said farewell to our son and cats and wouldn't return to our home for pretty much 10 weeks.

Not that with COVID and the lockdowns and with splitting my time between two places a few years ago this - to me at least - probably wasn't such a big deal, but I understood the impact for sure.Baca selengkapnya

Waiting for the boat

We arrived at the harbour on time, and were surrounded by a load of Porsches on the way to a track day around Goodwood circuit and a load of motorbikes going somewhere or other.

The wait sort of dragged on a bit and we ultimately left a little bit late. This was our first journey with DFDS and while the boat had quite a different feel about it, there was a familiarity about it too. The cafe didn't have a wonderful selection of wine but in the end we picked up food and a drink, went back to our cabin and settled down for the night.Baca selengkapnya

We were woken up an hour earlier than planned as the alarm on my phone went off early, because despite us only being a little south east of the Isle of Wight, my phone thought European time was best.

We'd previously arranged to check in early to our first hotel in order to get a bit of extra sleep, and to allow me to finish off the last couple of bits of work, but 7am would have been much too early so we drove to actual Gosport, had a coffee, did a bit of admin over water and a bacon roll (at Wetherspoons no less and actually a rather nice one in which not a single person was drinking booze) and walked to the harbourside taking photos.Baca selengkapnya

We then drove around the coast a bit to Lee-on-the-Solent, found a bench by the beach and relaxed for a while. Reading in the sun was a lovely relaxed way to spend the rest of the morning.

Gosport hotel & dinner

We checked into our hotel as planned, I did my last bits of work for three months and sleep was had. We took the opportunity to reorganise the boot of our car a bit, which I suspect we'll do a few more times yet, and relaxed before the evening.

That evening some family came to meet us in the pub by the hotel and we all shared a very nice meal indeed, accompanied by great chat and company. It was a great evening and reminded us we definitely shouldn't leave it quite so long between visits!

Early dinner and watching the F1

We arrived at our hotel a tiny bit later than planned but in good time to have a bite to eat and then watch what turned out to be a pretty decent F1 sprint race. We also picked up our maps and books to rule out a few places just out of the way in the south of England and added in plans for a couple more stops when we're in Scotland. Run into Petersfield and back

Weald & Downland Living Museum

We spent much of the rest of the day with family, firstly at the Weald & Downland Living Museum, where they film The Repair Shop. This was an excellent way to spend a few hours with great company, and the various buildings and demonstrations were really good with very engaging and enthusiastic volunteers being so positive about sharing their knowledge and skills. The Fox Goes Free

We'd heard about these first years ago on the Most Haunted TV show - which was featured on an information board there. Harry Potter Studios Tour

There's not a lot I can say about the HP Studio Tour that isn't self explanatory from what it is and from the photos. Suffice to say I think that even just the opening sequence before you move into the actual tour proper was meaningful and memorable enough to bring back memories from each of the famous films. Reading again: lunch, Siren and Dara

On getting back into Reading, we had a lovely early meal at Prezzo - the crab and lobster ravioli was delicious - then a bit of a relax for the rest of the afternoon.

On the way to seeing Dara O'Briain at the Hexagon we stopped off at Siren Craft Brew after not squeezing in to this place the previous month because we made the mistake of trying on a Saturday. I hate to be negative but was really only for beer lovers only. Slightly slow service and the wine wasn't great, but Siren's own Lumina IPA was lovely.

Dara's show itself was as brilliant as ever. Without giving anything away here, it put his previous show (seen by us in Birmingham) into incredible context.Baca selengkapnya
