Northland April 2025

After 40 years of marriage we are revisiting the area we originally honeymooned in. With just eleven days we won't be going up 90 Mile Beach again, so not visiting Cape Reinga, but excited to re-see another beautiful part of New Zealand Read more

  • Matakana Sculptureum

    April 18, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌩️ 22 °C

Amazing Sculptureum has outside areas with fantastic plantings and hard landscaping. Sculptural rock displays as well as more traditional sculptures, and most definitely NOT traditional works. Mind-blowing galleries inside. Then outside again to final gallery.
A full on two and a half hours

  • Sandspit to Dargaville

    April 20, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

On our way out of Warkworth, visited Sandspit Holiday Camp. Great to see they carry on the tradition of social club run events, e.g. Easter Egg Hunt
Drove to Leigh and looked out at Goat Island. Unfortunately due to sea swells our see through kayak trip was cancelled, so no paddling around admiring the marine reserve BUMMER
On the plus side, had extra time so popped into Mangawhai and had coffee and scones with the Salmond-Chong crew. Forgot to take photo though. Damn it!
Driving into Dargaville at dusk, it was all go with the river alongside, sunsetting, and ethereal peat fire smoke

    April 21, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Dargaville to Ahipara. Drove through amazing Waipoua Forest to see Tane Mahuta. Impressive! Best experience ever was korero we lucked into just as we were leaving. Another half hour later we left for real.
Lunch at Opononi, delicious snapper and outstanding view. Icecream dessert!
Rawene waiting for car ferry - quick run through of gallery

  • Ahipara to Paihia

    April 22, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Beautiful Ahipara beach, got out and got my feet onto the sand and up to my calves in the surf
To Gumdiggers Park, really interesting site with lots of info about the life and work of the mostly Dalmatian gumdiggers, original holes still there
Ka Uri gallery and cafe at Awanui was an unexpected delight. Highly recommended
A quick stop at dusk, to see the Stone Store at Keri Keri (from the other side of the river)

  • Opua, Kawakawa,Whangarei Falls - Thursda

    April 24, 2025 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

From Paihia called into Focus opshop there. Quirky shop layout.
Then onto Opua for a look at where yachts often register into, or out of, New Zealand
Stopped in Kawakawa to admire Hundertwasser designed public toilets, and enjoyed other arty farty bits in the township
On our way into town stopped at the Whangarei Falls which were very pretty. Certainly more spectacular than Aberdulais Falls in Wales 😄 (which set the bar for us for eminently forgettable sights)
