Not much sleep on relatively short flight. Lovely sunrise as we approached Bellize. First flight of the morning. Got car and headed to Belize City to pick up Maddie. Waited for her boat and then headed out of town. Hike through jungle in monkey bay sanctuary. No monkeys but snakes and iguanas. Ruins

Lazy start. Head to ruins by Guatemala border. Sound of howlers greet us but none in sight. Journey to ruins on hand cranked ferry. Cool off in river and again the howlers are mocking ya. Swim to other side but only see termite mounds. Maddie spots monkeys !!! Find Hannah in San Ignacio and make bumpy ride pack. Explore cave a bit. Our resident monkeys are quieter tonight.Read more

Bumpy road to caracol

Relatively early start to the day as we braved the uphill road through the village towards caracol. Bone rattling drive through pine forest on the riidge and through dense forests. Caves and rainy rainforest

Headed out of mikes to a misty day. Stopped at Belmopan market for produce and fry bread. Sprinkles abound. Herman’s Cave was our next stop. Short hike to cave and then longer loop trail. Muddy trail and then the deluge. At least it was a warm rain and kept bugs away. Checked out blue hole as well. Pretty water and some took s quick dip. Stop at dairy for ice cream. Into dangigria quickly for food before making out way again on bumpy road to cockscomb sanctuary.Read more

Heading south

Rainy morning so early am hike was delayed and short. Head out later for a longer hike up the hill and down to beautiful waterfalls. Sun returns! No animals though. Continue into Deep South to next lodging at sun creek lodge. Beautiful cabin, much more upscale the other places. Drive to punta gorda for first fish of trip.Read more

Culture and more waterfalls

Early morning run accompanied by protective big dog. Breakfast at lodge and head to maya adventure. Very cool exploration of Mayan culture complete with tortilla making and music playing. Great lunch as well. Drive through very traditional Mayan villages to rio blanco park. Short walk and then play in waterfalls and pools. Back to PG for chocolate tour and find fish.Read more

Goodbyes and prepararion

Hannah and doug up early to make the drive back to Belize City. Quick walk to things for coffee and they are off. Go on a run, first to the the end Of the road north and then back disown south. A series of unfortunate events

Pack up and say goodbye to Maddie. Fairly quick cab ride to marina. Boat there but no captain. Gradually more deliveries arrive. Finally boat driver arrives. Clouds gathering. Head out at 11 not 9. Calm through river and then waves start. An hour in boat slows and then stops. Need to clean out filter. 2 1-2 hours later still sittings in the wind and grey skies. Rescued by dudes in fast boat who Bring us back to marina. Free lodging in deserted bed bug infested guest lodge. Back to funky dodo in same cab. Beers cold shower and then dinner. Full bloody moon. Try again tomorrow.Read more

Always look on the bright side of life

Small craft advisory and continued rough surf kept us from heading to the atoll. Go for morning run to inform others. Breakfast and then long beach walk followed by reading on the beach. Occasional sun breaks. Hard to complain as certainly better than Portland in January and at work. Dinner of shrimp and pasta. Hope to go tomorrowRead more

Finally in paradise

Trying to remain optimistic about chances of going though weather suggests more rough seas. Go to check out the water and it is flat! Elwin picks us up and off to the marina. The catamaran is there and the captain is there the boat is not at the dock. Turns out we are going on a small mayor boat. Load us all in and off we go. Much calmer than before though skies remain ominous in the direction we are going. Swells increase as we get out further. Pull up to small island with cabanas on the water. Greeted by hostesses and given a tour. Turns out we can have an over water cabana. Head out snorkeling and tour almost all the way around the island. Lots of fish, stingrays and a few sharks - one nurse shark and one looking more nasty. Talk a walk on the dry reef and then go catch the sunset. Make nice fish stew and fall asleep to waves hitting the reef.Read more

Paddling the day away

Wake up to watch sunrise off our porch. Beautiful clear day. Tad bit breezy. Decide to get a kayak and explore out on the atoll. Stop at a few spots full of brain coral, purple fan coral and some crazy tubular coral. Lots of colors and a few barracudas. Wind picks up while snorkeling and fight our way back in. Relax and watch the water. Unfortunately zinc oxide does come off so burnt a bit. Another lovely sunset. Conch ceviche and lobster tail for dinner.Read more

Another day in paradise

Early morning clouds and even a brief shower give way to another beautiful day. Walk the dry reef though with high tide it is somewhat under water. Swim out to a new snorkel spot and see lion fish along with a rainbow of fish. Later go again and swim amongst thousands of big fish who don’t see to mind our presence. Watch another lovely sunset and head to the dock as Desmond returns with fish. Sharks swarm as he cleans them. Pick up our large spiny lobster. Lovely dinner on the deck with no wind and sky full of stars.Read more

A lazy day

A bit cloudy and a bit windy makes for book reading. Attempt a few snorkel trios but waves are a bit much. Do see rays and sharks. Go back by snorkel entry point and see lobster and cool black and yellow fish. Last sunset and fish fillets curry veg and brown rice for dinner.Read more

Stormy transition day

Wild rain storm awakens us. Just a bit misty as palapas hold. Morning is grey yet we prepare to leave. Load into little boat again. Fine start to boat ride and then seas get rough and we get wet. Rain follows and we get wetter. Back to the marina and we are drenched. Make it to road to catch bus to hokey pokey ferry. A bit of walking is involved though the day has cleared up. Make it to placencia though clueless on where to go. Finally find our cabana and head out on beach walk. Italian food for dinnerRead more

A final day in belize

Up early to watch sunrise after windy night. A tad bit cooler but still quite tropical. Rent bikes and go for a long ride on beach cruisers up the peninsula. Lots of development. Swim and beach walk before watching final sunset. Dinner on the beach and of course gelato.Read more
