  • Avebury

    August 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Earlyish start to catch as much sunshine as we can. Return to the military zone, and have a very muddy ride. Luckily no active shooting practice. Miss a turn but finally make it out. Nice ride to HoneyHill cafe for pastries. Learn that this area is the epicenter for wild crop circles. None appear while we ride on to Avebury, a site similar to Stonehenge. Bit of rain as we continue to campground. Manage to set up before rain.Read more

  • Stonehenge

    August 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Nice ride to Salisbury and viewed the Cathedral. Next was Old Sarum (we love our ruins). More hilly countryside to get to Stonehenge. Interesting pile of rocks. Our route to campground deviates as we find ourselves in military training zone. Watching big tanks zoom past us is a bit odd.Read more

  • Into Hampshire

    July 31, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Lots of rain and wind over night but managed to pack up a dry tent. Quiet farm roads to Winchester. Stop for some tarts and then explore. Lunch tucked under a tree near Cathedral. Misty ride up a ridge to lovely views. Another warm showers host and a pub dinner.Read more

  • A real rest day

    July 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Our host, Caroline, offered their garden for longer to allow us to rest. We were not about to pass that up. Did some route planning and bike cleaning. Doug also helped harvest honey. A little walk to the village and dinner with the family. Nice day of doing not much.Read more

  • Westward

    July 25, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Wake to a beautiful blue sky. Get our first view of the North Sea and looming clouds. Which of course open up on us. Seek shelter and wait it out. Continue on towards Rochester Castle. Push on to our next warm showers host - long day! Arrive to dinner already made for us! Amazing people 😍Read more

  • Canterbury

    July 24, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Getting used to riding on the opposite side of the road as we ride through the countryside (more wheat fields) to Canterbury. Decide to invest in a England heritage pass to ensure we stop and see sites. First St, Augustine Abbey in the pouring rain and then Canterbury Cathedral. Head north to our next host in Chestfield. We are getting used to staying in peoples gardens and accessing their homes. It’s very odd and amazing.Read more

  • Hello England

    July 23, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

Pack up and head to the ferry. Incredibly long wait amongst cars and caravans to get through all customs. Bumpy ride over. Land in Dover and pass Dover Castle. Rolling hillside to nice campground in meadow. Clear evening but chilly.Read more

  • To the Channel

    July 22, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Left after having our breakfast stalked by a gang of baby chickens. Stop in Saint Omer to view ruined cathedral and one still standing. Pastries of course and continue northward to Calais. Very windy and stormy. See the Channel in the distance.Read more

  • I hate wind

    July 21, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

What should have been an easy ride along the canals was way more challenging with headwinds. Day started with baby peacocks and a gang of baby chickens trying to eat our breakfast. Sun was out though as we raced barges along the canals. Made sure to have daily pastries. Find a nice campground and are told we are the first Americans ever.Read more

  • Onto France

    July 20, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Calm winds and relatively clear sky as we head out on lovely bike path. Cruise along towards France, barely noticing that we cross the border. Wind around Lille and head off route to campground

  • Flanders

    July 19, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Continue along past canals, odd art work and shrines of cycling. No need to go up ‘the wall’. Lots of elevation on cobbles. Another night with warm showers host.

  • Huevel= hilly

    July 18, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Easy start to the day as we head south of Brussels. Sunny day gets cloudy but not windy for a change. Follow a few marked routes and later realize that Hueval (one of the routes we are following ) means hilly. Which it was. And what would a day in Flanders be without some cobbles. Arrive at our first warm showers host. People open up their homes to slow travelers.Read more

  • Brussels

    July 17, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A little more complicated trip via public transportation but make it to Brussels. Lovely city with historic buildings everywhere. Seems many important dignitaries are in town as well. Eat frites and again try to avoid the rain showers.Read more

  • Leuven

    July 16, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Decided to take advantage of inexpensive campsite and proximity to a few cities and so some sightseeing. First, Leuven, a small university city that happened to be hosting a volleyball tournament. Wandered around, ducking into buildings to avoid rain drops. (More photos to follow later)Read more

  • Belgium is not flat

    July 15, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Day starts sunny but clouds up quickly. Wind is blowing hard and not in our favor. More riding through fruit orchards and wheat fields. Ride on almost every imaginable surface and then hit some significant hills. It all makes us stronger. Sadly the medicinal wine fell and broke.Read more

  • Doug’s Birthday

    July 14, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Unable to make it to France to celebrate Bastille Day (and Doug’s birthday) so Belgium had to do. Sunny but windy day and the riding was relatively easy. A few introductions to hills. Nice coffee stop in a park. Made it to hotel in time to see end of Tour d’France. Walk into Sint Trubien for dinner and gelato.Read more

  • A rest day of sorts

    July 12, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Very stormy night and the winds were brutal in the morning. Opted to rest and focus on fixing the noise in my bike. After Doug’s valiant attempt, took it to a bike shop. 15 minutes of magic and it was fixed. No charge. People are kind! Finally eat soft serve and find the sprinkles that I remember eating in Holland as a child. Still tasty!Read more

  • Farmlands and away from canals

    July 10, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Shortish day to get back to the Maas route. Lovely cycling weather. Cycle infrastructure is amazing as we continue to follow the “nodes”. Sort of like connect the dots but with numbers that don’t necessarily follow each other. Makes for easy routing. Nd early and relax in another nature camp.Read more
