    KAMPABHUT pathway

    In Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, the rulers built many ancient paths. One of the most important of these ancient routes is the Kampabhupa Pathway A broad stone pathway along the banks of the Tungabhadra. It is said to have been laid on the orders of Kampabhupa, the son of Vira Harihara Raya (1377 1404 CE). It connects the Virupaksha Bazaar Street to Chakratirtha and beyond.
    This pathway, starting at the eastern agdo end of the Virupaksha bazaar passes through a narrow passage between a group of boulders, also called the 'Onake Kindi' (view through a window). A bas relief sculpture of a standing male figure with folded hands in Anjali mudra is thought to be Kampabhupa, who ordered the construction of the pathway.     Chakrathirtha' can be roughly translated to sacred whirlpool. Chakratirtha is situated between two hills, the Rishimukha Hill on the north and the Matanga Hill on the south. At this spot, the Tungabhadra River gets narrow and changes direction, turning from east to north. As a result, strong currents are formed, and these currents are not always discernible from the shore. It is a popular spot among pilgrims and is visited by many people on auspicious days This location is regarded to be the most sacred spot along the Tungabhadra River, and is thought to be where Shiva handed Vishnu his weapon, the Chakra.

    TEMPLES ON THE HEMAKUTA HILL

    THE GRANITE SOPE OF THE SACRED HEMAKUTA HILL IS DOTTED WITH SHRINES. THE HILL IS ENCIRCLED ON ITS THREE SIDES BY MASSIVE FORTIFICATION. TO THE NORTH IS THE ENCLOSURE WALL OF VIRUPAKSHA TEMPLE. THE COMPLEX HAS THREE GATEWAYS. MORE THAN THIRTY SHRINES STAND ON THIS HILL. THESE VARY FROM ELABORATE STRUCTURES WITH MULTIPLE SANCTUMS TO RUDIMENTRIES, SINGLE CELLED CONSTRUCTION. MOST OF THESE TEMPLES HAVE STEPPED PYRAMIDAL TYPE OF SUPERSTRUCTURE.

    TWO OF THE TEMPLES HAVE INSCRIPTIONS. THE TRIPLE SHIVA TEMPLE ON THE EAST HAS AN INSCRIPTION RECORDING THAT VIRA KAMPILADEVA, SON OF MUMMADI SINGEYA NAYAKA, BUILT THE SIVALAYA AND INSTALLED IN IT THREE LINGAS. TWO INSCRIPTIONS ON THE ROCK NEAR PRASANNA ANJANEYA TEMPLE DATED 1938 AD. MENTION THAT VIRUPAKSHA PANDITA AND HIS BROTHER CONSTRUCTED A TEMPLE OF VIRUPAKSHA AND DUG A TANK. ANOTHER INSCRIPTION ON A ROCK BASE RECORDS THE SETTING OF A LAMP PILLAR IN THE TEMPLE OF JADEYA SANKARADEVA BY BUKKAYAVE, THE QUEEN OF HARIHARA II IN THE YEAR 1397 AD. THE GROUP OF TEMPLES ON THE HEMAKUTA HILLS FORM ONE OF THE EARLIEST GROUP OF STRUCTURES AT HAMPI AND APPEAR TO DATE FROM ABOUT 9TH TO EARLY 14TH CENTURY AD.     Narasimha Temple

    This temple is found on the boulder of a hill which is to the compound of this temple itself. There are no idols found in the garbhagriha. The temple is surrounded by a precinct To the northeast of the precinct is a double-storeyed gateway. A Phamsana-style shikhara (tower) is seen above the garbhagriha. The temple is constructed on an elevated adhishtana and its walls are ornamentally decorated, much like the temple of Kampilaraya situated on the Hemakuta Hill. One can identify the bas-relief sculpture of an elephant, Anjaneya and Garuda here. This temple was constructed in 1379 CE. by Chakravarti Ayya, in the era of Immadi Harihara. An inscription refers to the idol as that of Ahobala Sri Veera Narasimha. The inscription mentions that, in 1410 CE., Nageya Nayaka constructed a mandapa for the goddess Mahalakshmi. He started the ritual of holding the marriage ceremony between Narasimha and Mahalakshmi in this temple.     India is a country of various cultures, legends, and beliefs and Hampi is no exception to this. A big Banyan tree near Sita Seragu, which is on the banks of River Tungabhadra, is deemed sacred and spiritual and is also known as Wish Tree. Offerings are made to this tree by wrapping a stone in a cloth and tying it to its branches. Those wishing for a house, stack stones one on top of the other. They also build mounds of soil and mud and pray for a good harvest. When the wish is fulfilled, the stone is unwrapped and placed in the vicinity. This ritual is practised in many parts of India.

    Today, the beauty of the tree is compromised, as the stone is wrapped in plastic and tied around the tree's branches. The traditional methods had zero or little impact on the environment. It is recommended, to maintain the sanctity of this Holy Tree, one must opt for cotton cloth instead of plastic for these rituals.    Читать далее

    Hampi and its surrounding regions have strong mythological associations with the great Indian epic, the Ramayana. Today, the water from the tank is used for irrigation through a lift irrigation process. The tank is a simple structure associated with many legends. The pellicle on the huge granite boulders is believed to be Sita Seragu, situated in front of the Narasimha Temple.     After the bot dropped us we walked ald looked for the village near by. The sun was high in the sky and we were hungry. We stoped some guy on a motorcycle and asked him for directions. Then we asked him to just take us. We drove for 2 km and he took us to this lovely lady that didn't knew englisch. She served us rice, sambar, curry and Bapam. Bapam is made from rice.     We returned to our hostel, after a full day and 12 km waking. Starving. Wenn we ordered food, we asked to enter the kitchen and see how it was made. We recived a crushed course, how to make Malai Kufta and lemon rice.

    Stories of today will probably be updated later cus we dont have wifi.
