  • Buenos Aires

    March 12, 2009 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I took a bus from Puerto Iguazú at 430pm, and arrived in Buenos Aires the next morning at 930am! Yes, it was a 19 hours bus ride 🤣 I did it purposely to save time and cost since didn't have to pay for accommodation also😁😅

Upon arrival, took a scroll, here are some of them...

Picture 1: The Casa Rosada aka Pink House, the office of the President of Argentina

Picture 2 and 3: La Recoleta Cemetery, and the final resting place of the nation's iconic first lady, Eva "Evita" Perón. My Lonely Planet Guide Book told me that just looked for a tomb that had the most flowers would do💐

Picture 4: Floralis Genérica, a sculpture that was designed to move, closing its petals in the evening and opening them in the morning

🚌 Next destination: Bariloche, Argentina, another long bus ride😅

  • San Carlos de Bariloche

    March 13, 2009 in Argentina ⋅ 18 °C

The day before, I took a 19 hours bus ride from Puerto Iguazú to Buenos Aires. This time, it was another 19 hours ++ bus journey 🤣🤣 真系前世未坐过巴士🤣🤣 Left at 7.35pm by Via Bariloche-Cama Ejecutivo, arrived in Bariloche at 3.30pm the next day! Took a scroll in the town then hit a motel. Thanks God, I could finally sleep on a bed instead of sleeping in a bus😅

Picture 1: Somewhere in Bariloche. Can't really remember the town name, if you know, please tell me ya 😁

Picture 2: Took in front of the motel. The motel was nice, and the rate was very low too as far as I could remember. Perhaps the best part was the view in front of the motel, it was breathtaking 😍

  • Puerto Varas

    March 14, 2009 in Chile ⋅ 15 °C

Woke up early in the morning and took another bus to Puerto Varas, Chile. Luckily the bus journey this time was just 6 hours only 😂

Picture 1: Puerto Varas. This dude in the photo, I didn't know him. Apparently not many Asians visited Puerto Varas, so he thought it would be cool if I could take a photo with him 😂

Picture 2: Railway.... Oh ya by the way, I still have the jacket that I was wearing in the photo. So tahan lasak (durable) eh.... 🤣

  • Santiago

    March 15, 2009 in Chile ⋅ 28 °C

Took an overnight bus in Puerto Varas at 9pm and left for Santiago, the capital of Chile. Yes, slept in a bus AGAIN 🤣🤣 Arrived in Santiago around 830am after 11 and a half hours. Spent the whole day in the city and then headed to the airport before it got dark.

This time I upgraded myself, SLEPT AT THE AIRPORT 🤣🤣 Well, you probably have seen those backpackers slept at KLIA in Malaysia, right? Hehe... I have done that too! Perhaps not in the Malaysia airport-lah 😅

Picture 1 & 2 : La Moneda, also known as "Coin Palace". A changing of the guard ceremony takes place every two days, and I was lucky to be able to witness one of them. Frankly, I wasn't sure was I allowed to take photo with the guard, but.. lantaklah 🤣 And.... honestly, all it came to my mind on this photo taking was Mr. Bean (if you know what I am talking about).

Picture 3: Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas. Yes... I have edited the photo to make sure the photo still looks ok when it fits into the square photo frame of Instagram 😅

Picture 4: La Chascona, one of the three houses owned by the noted Chilean poet and Nobel literature prize winner, Pablo Neruda. Neruda had a quirky personality that is reflected in this house. How much is his quirkiness? Please Google ya🤣

  • Arica

    March 16, 2009 in Chile ⋅ 23 °C

After spending a cold night at the Santiago Airport, yes it was cold😂, I took a 6.05am flight to Arica (Chile). As soon as arriving, took a bus to Tacna (Peru), and then immediately took another bus to Arequipa (Peru). When I arrived, it was already 5pm. Left me no choice but to hit a motel. Usually when I backpacked alone, I didn't hang out in the town at night for the obvious reasons, except once, in Amsterdam 😂

  • Arequipa

    March 16, 2009 in Peru ⋅ 21 °C

I remember I woke up very early in the morning as there were a lot to see. Yes, the "White City" of Arequipa is one of Peru's most photogenic places 😍 Some may ask, why did I took the hassles of transferring bus after bus? Well, most of the attractions in South America are scattered, going by planes for all destinations would be very expensive. Since there weren't much trains, taking buses was the best option. Even that, options were limited as I had to pick a reputation one and also made sure the bus ran on paved road.

Picture 1: Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa @ Plaza de Armaa

Picture 2: Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús

Picture 3 & 4: Santa Catalina Monastery. This monastery accepted only women from upper class Spanish families and had to pay a dowry for the admission

  • Cusco

    March 18, 2009 in Peru ⋅ 11 °C

On the 17th, I left Arequipa at 8.45pm via CRUZ DEL SUR‏. The journey was shorter, just a little bit over 8 hours and arrived in Cusco at 5am. However, immediately I faced another problem. It was still very dark at 5am 😬 But luckily the driver allowed me to stay in the bus until dawn!! Phew..... 😅

When it got brighter, I cruised around the downtown of Cusco, a Unesco World Heritage Site that was once the capital of the Inca Empire. About noon, I took a bus to Urubamba, then another bus to Ollantaytambo, which was my last pit stop before the grand final destination, Machu Picchu 😍

    Picture 1: La Catedral Cusco

Picture 2: Qoricancha, "The Golden Temple," was the most important temple in the Inca Empire.

Picture 3: The twelve-angled stone. Frankly, I didn't go and looked for this stone. When I walked through the street, a local saw me and asked me to take a photo of it (most likely because I looked like a tourist 😂). After I came home, then only I understood the significance of this stone ☺️

The twelve-angled stone was part of a stone wall of an Inca palace, and is considered to be a national heritage object. In fact , it's one of the most sophisticated examples of Inca ingenuity as it is made up of about 12 angles that fit perfectly into the adjacent wall. The joints of the wall are so precisely fashioned that even today, hundreds of years after it was first constructed, not even a single piece of paper can fit between any of the wall’s blocks! By the way, do you manage to count the 12 angles? 😁

Picture 1: Ollantaytambo ruins. As I recall, I arrived in Ollantaytambo around 5pm. So I quickly took a tour of the ruins. Yes, I usually don't go out at night when I travel alone.

  • Machu Picchu

    March 19, 2009 in Peru

Yes, finally the D-Day had come!!! I remember I woke up very early as I had a 5.37am train to catch. Luckily, I stayed very near to the train station, as far as I could remember, 5 - 10 minutes walking distance.

From Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, trains are the only way. I arrived in Machu Picchu at around 7am and took a tour bus going up the hill. I couldn't remember how long was the bus ride, it was smooth not bumpy. However, I do remember the road was very narrow. I even remember there was a girl in front of me, took a peek by pulling the bus window curtain and said excitedly, yes excitedly, to her mom, "The bus was so close to the cliff!" 😅

Anyway, as soon as I got off the bus, the VIEW was blowing off my mind 😱TOTALLY LOVED IT!!🤩 What showed in my photos were way underrated!! 😉

NOTE: Machu Picchu was a symbol of the Incan Empire. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Picture 1: The angle where most tourists would take a photo 😂

Picture 2: Interior of an Inca building, featuring trapezoidal windows.

Picture 3: Yes, I was standing on the mountain ledge!! Looking back, I think I was very stupid to listen to the tour guide. Yes, the tour guide asked us to stand on the ledge for a photograph. Really, it was quite dangerous. What's behind me was a valley that was at least 2000 meter in elevation, about a 600-storey skyscraper (I think) 😬

Pictutre 4: Llama, cute eh 🤩

  • Nazca Lines

    March 20, 2009 in Peru

After visiting Machu Picchu, I took an overnight bus (yet another) from Cusco to Nazca. It was a 14 hours journey, I arrived in Nazca around 8am the next day ✌🏼

Then I went to a bus station, planning to take a bus to the airport for a flight over Nazca Lines. However, as most Peruvians didn't speak English back then, and smart phones weren't that common back then, I used drawing to communicate with the bus station staff 😁, pandai kan 🤣? Well it failed and didn't work out as she couldn't understand my drawings 🤣

But luckily, there was a taxi driver standing by the fence calling out to me, he spoke English! He said he could bring me to the airport. Yes 😍!! However, as soon as I sat inside the taxi, I realized he was probably not a legal taxi driver, like one of those illegal one 霸王车 in Malaysia. I started to worry especially when he passed through woods. At that point, I even put my hand on the car lock so would jump off the car if needed 🤣But luckily, after a few minutes, we came out from the woods and passing through a plain grounds, phew😅 Thanks God!!

After arriving the aiport, I took a plane and had a 30 minutes flight over the Nazca Lines 😁 So, what's my verdict on the trip? Well frankly, I think I probably didn't know how to appreciate the view of this UNESCO World Heritage site 😂

Fyi.. Nazca Lines are known as geoglyphs – drawings on the ground made by removing rocks and earth to create a “negative” image. Scientists believe that the majority of lines were made by the Nasca people, who flourished from around A.D. 1 to 700 😱 But strange though, why would they made an image of an astronaut 1500 years ago? Or.. is that an image of an alien? 🤔

  • Lima

    March 21, 2009 in Peru ⋅ 23 °C

Lima was the last city for my South America trip. On the 20th, I took a short 7 hours ride from Nazca to Lima, yes, 7 hours was considered short. 😂

Met up a local, Luis, a friend's friend. Had a dinner together and showed him the places that I planned to visit He frowned over a place that I planned to visit and asked me why would I want to go there. I told him it was recommended by Lonely Planet 😂 Then he advised, if he was me, he probably wouldn't visit the place😅 Lesson learned, it's really good to have locals to take a look of our itinerary 😁

Picture 1: Government Palace of Peru

Picture 2: Basílica y Convento de San Francisco. Centuries-old catacombs decorated with human bones pepper the crypts at this Franciscan monastery dating to 1774.
