    Spent the day on trains and buses getting to Takayama. It was a good day to travel as it rained continuously. Our luggage that was shipped from Tokyo was waiting at our ryokan.

    Takayama was formally an enclave for skilled carpenters working for
    the imperial courts in Kyoto and Nara. It has retained much of its traditional architecture and is
    well known for its crafts, particularly yew-wood carving, shunkei lacquerware, pottery and
    furniture.
