Amazing church, amazing views & a maze

    November 14, 2024 on Norfolk Island ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

A busy day that involved a lot of walking but everything was rewarding in very different ways. Even though the island is not very large, it is quite hilly, so it's a good thing we have a car.
First stop was St Barnabas Church with lovely stained glass windows, marble flooring and baptismal font, and especially the inlaid shell mosaics on the end of the pews. The roof reminded me of an upturned hull of a ship, which is exactly what it was meant to look like.
Travelling onto several lookouts where we saw the recently planted rows of 100 Norfolk lines for the latest person to turn 100. There was also the memorial to 2 young soldiers who were washed off the rocks while fishing (in the 1800's). The legend goes they had discovered an escaped convict that had been hiding out in a hollow tree for 7 years. They turned him in and the penalty for the convict was death. Prior to hanging, the convict cursed the soldiers that they would die a horrible death - two weeks later they drowned while fishing.
Next stop was the 100 acre reserve which reminded us of Pooh Bear in the hundred acre woods, and perhaps this is why it earnt the name. It is an area where mutton birds nest and also where some black birds with a white head (name escapes me at the moment) came swooping at us. They didn't attack but it was a bit unnerving. There were also some impressive fig trees with enormous buttresses. Some steep sections here too.
After a well deserved lunch we drove out to a hedge maze. Did the kiddie maze in 2 minutes but the adult maze had us wandering around for about an hour trying to find the centre... so confusing.
Final stop was Captain Cook lookout which is where they think Cook first landed in 1774. There are some spectacular rocky islands and quite an array of birdlife, including a tropicbird and even a masked booby.
This evening, we went to the island fish fry - a salad buffet with battered fried fish - with entertainment provided by a Pitcairn Is local and Polynesian style dancers, the Bounty Beauties. Another good day and I expect we will sleep well tonight.

  • Museum visit part 1

    November 15, 2024 on Norfolk Island ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We purchased a museum pass which gave us unlimited access to 4 museums plus 2 tag along tours which was a guide taking us through 2 of the museums, giving us an overview before the museums opened at 11am. The Kingston area is known as the capital of Norfolk Island but the main business and shopping area is in Burnt Pine. Kingston is where the museums are as it was the original settlement was. Today we visited the Commissariat (government store) and 9 Quality Row (period house of the time). Interesting stories. We will join another tour tomorrow morning for the other museums.
After our museum visits we headed down the road to bloody bridge. The story goes that while the convicts were building the bridge, they killed the guard and buried him in the bridge. His body was discovered because blood was oozing out between the stones. This may or may not have happened, but it makes a good story anyway.
We wandered through the cemetery - the oldest headstone from 1798. As mentioned before, burials are free on Norfolk Island.
As it was a nice day, we headed up to Mt Pitt for some fantastic views of the island and finished the day with a swim in Emily Bay - very safe, very clear water.

  • Markets, golf and murder mystery dinner

    November 17, 2024 on Norfolk Island ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

A fairly relaxed day. Went to the markets where I bought a timber pot stand/s in the shape of interlocking spirals. Did a bit of window shopping (pretty much all shops are closed on Sunday). Drove to an area of the island we had not already visited with the crystal pool.
After lunch the boys went to play a game of golf while Heidi and I watched a movie (DVD). They enjoyed the golf although it was very windy.
In the evening, we went to a Murder mystery dinner, we were all given a character, dressed up, and had to try and work out who committed the murder. I played the teenage daughter of an American captain of a whaling vessel who was engaged to the son of one of the local mutineers (this was Brad's character). A fun night trying to work out who the murderer was .... and the biggest surprise... it was me!
