The cemetery around Hallstatt’s Catholic Church encountered a serious problem — no more room.

As an alternative, the Church began to dig graves up after 10 years and decorate the skulls of the deceased for display in this small building adjacent to the church.

With cremation having become a preferred method in more recent times, this practice is now rare. However, the bones exist for us to take a look at, in the Charnel House, or Bone House.Read more
