Beautiful Bruges: Markt and Belfry

The Markt -- the Market Square -- has been used as such since the mid-900s. In the center of the Markt is a statue of two Flemish heroes who resisted French oppression in the 1300s, backed by all the lovely buildings around the square.

The 'Crown" is the 12th century Belfry of Bruges, which rises 272 ft over the Flemish cloth market hall underneath. It has a 47-bell carillon that plays music every hour. It leans to one side (about 3 feet at the top). We could see it from all over the old town, so it was a good landmark when we made a wrong turn or two! Czytaj więcej
