We drove up to the highest point of the Algarve, almost 3000 ft. We could see the coastline and the Southeast point of Portugal on one side, and mountain farmland on the other. This is a town where we saw real Portuguese people going about their day: men drinking coffee in the town square, people shopping at the market, a group of 5 women sweeping the church, and a sweet little lady selling Mendronho, sort of a high-test liquor that she distills herself. This morning we drove away from the coast up into the mountains of the Algarve. In Silves was a castle, cathedral, and Roman Bridge, which we saw as we went by. Then we saw an amazing number of nesting storks feeding their babies, and flying around.もっと詳しく

Seeking Laundry, Beach, & Dinner

Jacob and Jodie left for home. It was sad to say goodbye, but we'll see them in England.
Now it was time to wash clothes. Our attempts to find a laundromat were funny: At our resort, there is none, but they told us we could find one at a resort across the road. We asked directions, got a map, and walked all around, finally finding it, but there were only two washers and one dryer, and parking was not close. So we searched online and found one, but it was closed for the lunch hour. Then we found a tourist information place and couldn’t understand all of the information, except we found out that a certain grocery store chain, Intermarche, sometimes has laundry facilities. We knew there was one close to our resort, so went there. It only had 2 washers and 1 dryer, but we could drive up, we could get change in the store, and they had coffee and yummy custard tarts!

Next, we went in search of a beach for a good view. We didn’t stay as it was time for dinner. We found a great Portuguese restaurant a few blocks from our condo, and got a complete meal for 11 euros (about $13): soup or salad, garlic bread, fish or meat, potatoes or rice, a whole decanter of wine, dessert, and coffee! Church of St. Lawrence, Loule

We drove about 30 minutes away to the village of Loule, to see the Church of Sao Lourenco; that is the Portuguese spelling of St. Lawrence. It is a small church, but the inside is amazing—done all in traditional Portuguese tile work to show St. Lawrence’s life and martyrdom. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside, so here is a photo of the postcard we bought—it’s not too clear, but gives an idea of what it’s like.もっと詳しく

Jacob and Jodie took us to a winery for a tour, and tasting, of course! Vida Nova means New Life. We found out why this area is so good for grapes--the abundant sunshine and constant sea breezes that prevent molds on the grapevines. The wine was great!もっと詳しく

We drove to the Southwest corner of the European continent, about one hour away. It is very windy and somewhat cool. The tip of the continent is the Cape of St Vincent, and has cliffs and a fort. Flowers are blooming everywhere!もっと詳しく

Jacob and Jodie met up with us in the afternoon, and we went into town. Albufeira used to be a fishing village, and now is a bustling tourist town with beaches, tourist activities, and nightlife. There are lots of restaurants, of course—here we are at a good Chinese restaurant.

Most of the buildings in town are white, but there are some pastel condos by the marina. The chimneys in the Algarve (Southern coast of Portugal) are made of pottery, unique, and varied.もっと詳しく

Then we went around Seville and crossed the border into Portugal. Upon arriving in Albuferia, the GPS lady couldn’t find our condo and took us all over on some one-track “roads” so we asked someone for directions. Our condo is at a Golf resort and is very nice. Driving to Ronda, Spain

This morning we left the Costa del Sol and headed for Albufeira, in the Algarve region of Portugal, the Southern coast. Rather than drive the quickest way, we chose to drive up in the mountains through Ronda on the way to Seville, which is a popular drive. We could see why! The scenery was beautiful and I had to try to keep from pointing things out so Dean could keep his eyes on the winding road. The drive actually took us above the treeline for a short distance.もっと詳しく

The Cathedral of the Holy Incarnation is a beautiful example of Renaissance-Baroque style with Gothic features. There are two huge organs and a beautiful wooden "choir".

The ancient Gothic chapel altarpiece (last picture) is for Saint Barbara. During the Spanish Civil War it was closed off and therefore not damaged.もっと詳しく

We drove to the city center of Malaga, with some continuing issues getting around, but finally found a parking garage near the harbor and the tourist information center. We obtained a map and directions on walking to some of the best sites. The streets are like in a lot of Europe: they zig-zag and wind around, but Malaga is beautiful! Lots of landscaping and clean, beautiful walkways along the harbor, with pedestrian streets throughout downtown. Parking is limited and expensive, so we’ve seen all ages driving scooters. This used to be a monastery, and has been converted into a luxury hotel (a paradour) with beautiful mosaic paths through the gardens.

Fortifications of Alhambra

After the Reconquest, Queen Isabel I and King Fernando II incorporated the Alhambra as a Royal palace with military defenses. All of the buildings were re-purposed over the years--it was too hard to tear down and rebuild all that stone!もっと詳しく

Cathedral of St. Maria de la Alhambra

The Grounds of the Alhambra

The palace grounds are landscaped beautifully with flowers and bushes. Since it’s spring, many trees are in bloom.

A Day Trip to Granada, Spain

Granada is about 2 hours away, so we got up early. We saw a weather front pouring over the mountain tops like a waterfall. Very cool! We also had a chance to see more poppies and actually got a picture of them as we drove past on the motorway (freeway).

Granada was very confusing! We entered an Information Center into the GPS and couldn’t find it or a Park and Ride. We tried to find the Alhambra but GPS didn’t recognize that word alone. Finally we saw signs, Alhambra Palace in English, and followed those. Once we were at the Alhambra, we found out we had needed to buy tickets online several days in advance. We thought we’d be safe because it’s early in the season. No tickets were available for the next two days, so we thought we were out of luck, but then we noticed some parts are free!もっと詳しく

We had a huge pub lunch in Irish town, named for the two boatloads of Irish women brought in to provide companionship for the troops who were bored and resorting to drink which was "bad for discipline".

Remnants from old military buildings are re-purposed for residential and commercial use. Low taxes and few government regulations stimulate many business ventures, such as online gaming, banking, and tourism. Basically the community is a commercial venture so all projects have to be paid for without a loan.もっと詳しく
