Ben's drinks party

Enjoyed meeting Diane, the real estate agent who found Ben's house, her daughter Diane who has a motor boat and her husband, Mark, who has a vintage Maine dinghy. (What is Ben trying to engineer, I wonder?!) Also Pip and Mary, funky members of one of Maine's "four families" and Helen the antiques dealer, Stacey Coates who was excited by Mr Bingley, and Hattie and Hugh, media guru and Times DC correspondent with their frighteningly bright 6 year old twins - "how old are you? - "oh, maaan..".
Enjoyed making all the food and managing the drinks, generally pretending it was our house.Læs mere

Quick turnaround at Ben's and then off for a bankrupting lobster roll at Popham beach the site of an ill fated settler community who were broken by their first Maine winter, their leader died and they built a ship, the Virginia, to escape to Virginia.Læs mere

Shouty yachting and luxy boating

Day 2 Maine cont. - Ben's high level networking resulted in some millionaire afternoon water sports all round. Crispin went on Mark's limited edition, vintage wooden Maine dingy as his crew for some races. After sabotaging the first race by failing to securely attach the main halyard, Crispin went on to relative glory, achieving second last place in the second race.
Meanwhile, the rest of us took the deluxe motorboat option with Robyn, Diane, Max and his lovely girlfriend, Amarita. We followed the race, swam off the boat, drank rose and saw some seals. A fantastic way to see the gorgeous Maine coast and a wonderful day.
Although Crispin went AWOL and missed the drinks party in Bath after his phone stopped working causing much concern. We left early but not before squeezing in some valuable networking with the charmingly erudite and fabulously well connected Ken, famous anthropologist, ex director of the Sundance festival and Los Angeles libraries.
Crispin, Ben and Katie finished the Maine stay with some regrettable over- consumption.😬Læs mere

A packed Day 1 in NE Mass. A chatty breakfast with Ro and Peter, then onto Mount Watatic - a short hike up to a great view of more trees, navigating some of the many New England potatoes en route. We have learnt that all woods in New England are second generation. The first ones were chopped down by the settlers to farm the land. Fields and stone walls would have been the landscape until 1930s when people returned from the war and went west to the better farmland.
Thence to the shooting range where Stanley proved to be a bit of a Dead Eyed Dick with the rifle, the pistol and the trap.Læs mere

Very relaxed morning in the garden, drinking Ro's delicious coffee, eating blueberry pancakes with freshly picked blueberries from the garden and cleaning the guns from yesterday. Eventually set off for Concord to look at museum and check out the Rude Bridge and the Minute Man. Peter treated us to lunch in The Colonial Inn.Læs mere

Just when we thought we might get a rest, the boys were dispatched to find another fish. They gained a fish but lost Peter's rod...
Meanwhile Katie visited the swimming "hole over the road.
We all dined on the fish, cooked by Stanley with garlicky flair and bedtime was heralded by fireworks 🎇 and star ✨ spotting. Ro also showed us her Marine practice pistol - "this is not my first rodeo". This has been an experience packed few days and it has been wonderful to spend so much time with Ro and Peter who are marvellously themselves.Læs mere

Very hot today. Rachel took us on an air conditioned driving tour of Woodstock and surrounds. The Byrdcliffe artistic community, the xxxx theatre and a very closed Opus 40. And the Big Pink.
Back for a tasty lunch in the netted porch and then off to the Saugerties Lighthouse for a swim in the Hudson where the cousins rebonded by playing "get Stanley underwater" for a very long time. A temperature relieving rainstorm.
This evening we all walked down into town for jolly cocktails and dinner at Sylvia's in Woodstock.Læs mere
