• I'm getting paid to go to the beach!

    November 5, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

This week started out very nicely indeed. It's the end of calving season and Laura and Yens the two other calf rearers have finished working and left on Tuesday. To celebrate and to thank everyone for the to work they have put in this season Bruce and Candy treated all the team to a very nice meal at a restuarant. The meal included drinks, mains and deserts and the food was excellent. Both Nick and I had lamb shanks for main and I had a lovely white chocolate and passionfruit cheese cake for dessert. I am the most isolated member of the team in terms of meetint people so I did find it a little surreal sitting next to people I've said no more than hello to in the past 3 months. However saying that it was also nice to all be together and speak to everyone properly. The last calf left the farm this week as well. All the cows have finally calved and now for Nick it's a case of carrying on the work to weaning them off milk and onto grass. Grace has become the person to help the calf rearer working the days when the other is off so that they are not doing the work alone initially. Bruce has a long ongoing back problem which has got very bad recently so Candy's cousin Joel has come to stay to help out on the farm while Bruce looks for a manager to temporarily help him out. Joel has ten years experience dairy farming so he has been a real credit to have. He's living in the house so my meals have been upped to cover an extra mouth but it's not been so hard so far. He has a young dog called Zeus who I am also warming too. Tika isn't too impressed by him but I think she'll come around. This whole experience has really helped me get over most of my childhood fear of dogs and now I love lying down on the ground playing with Tika, something I would never do 3 months ago. Hopefully with Zeus as well that will keep developing. I went into the office on my days off to finalise the logo I designed before the free trial of illustrator ran out. I now have the final options done and Bruce and Candy can simply select which colour arrangement they wish to go for. This week I took the girls to Caroline Bay which has a lovely beach. It's been getting hotter and hotter so running around in the sea was amazing. Cassidy was cautious at first but was loving it by the end. We all had a brilliant time and spent a good few hours there. On day trips like this it's easy to forget you're working because you're enjoying yourself so much. That's now the dream for my future job is to find something I love so much that it doesn't even feel like working and the pay is just an added bonus. I'm sure that's everyone's dream but having experienced that feeling it feels more achievable and desirable.Read more
