In 2013, my son Chris was married in Kualur Lumpur. Dani and I decided to extend our trip with a visit to India, and a stay in Dubai - two places which we'd been interested in for some time.

Our first stop in India was Delhi. In retrospect it was probably a mistake to spend more than a night or two there, but it was an experience, no doubt.
The traffic is just overwhelming, and we were lucky enough to have a driver who really looked after us and showed us some interesting sights.Read more

A long drive along a new (pretty well deserted) motorway had us flashing past lots of farmland, and hundreds of "universities" which specialised in pretty much everything, it seemed.

And we're done in India. Mixed feelings. India didn't really live up to our expectations, but I think we picked the wrong destinations, and did way too much touristy stuff instead of seeing the real India and meeting people. A huge mistake by our travel agent also had us in Delhi on a public holiday, which meant many places were closed to the public.

After another flight with the pretty ordinary Emirates Airlines, we landed in Dubai, where we stood for about 5 hours in a queue to get through customs, where they were attempting to take eye scans of every visitor with only two machines available, and those not working properly. Quite the farce. The airport, however is just amazing, and was a first insight into how much money has been spent on turning Dubai into an amazing destination.Read more

After a drive to Abu Dhabi along some amazing motorways we checked into our hotel on Yas Island. Our room overlooked the Yas Marina Raceway (home of the Formula 1 race every year), and we could see the roof of Ferrari World beyond the raceway.Read more

Our first day in Abu Dhabi we took a guided tour.. Abu Dhabi is really nice, as was everybody we met. Some of the buildings are simply gob-smacking.

The highly anticipated trip to Ferrari World was a bit of a let down. There was comparatively very little about the heritage and history of the marque (I am a big fan!), it felt to me that it was all about selling cars and hats. I did take a drive in a racing simulator though, and that was pretty amazing. The big Roller Coaster was out of action the day we went :( Lift your game, Ferrari!Read more

Leaving Abu Dhabi, we were driven back to Dubai, but on the way we stopped at the stunning, amazing Sheik Zayfed Mosque. Dani had to dress in a Burka before being allowed to enter :)

What can you say about Dubai? We spoke with a British Ex-pat who described it as "Disneyland on steroids". From humble beginnings, vast injections of oil money have turned Dubai into a tourist and shopping paradise. Probably not for everyone, but it's hard to imagine how anybody couldn't get SOMETHING out of Dubai. We particularly loved the Sooks (Bazaars), which were such a contract to the hi-tech, high dollar parts of Dubai.Read more

The legendary Desert Safari! We enjoyed a trip out of Dubai into the desert, where we were treated to drifting through massive sand dunes with a horde of other 4-wheel drives. From then onto a Bedouin camp for dinner, camel rides, dancing and drinking. Really good fun!Read more
