  • Chamraoen's Home, Siem Reap, Day 2

    24. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

As we got here pretty late last night we didn't get a tour to Angkor sorted, so today we plan to have a chilled day and explore the town a bit. It's lovely to wake up after a nice nights sleep (air con really is worth every penny) and we slowly get up and head out for some breakfast.
After eating we head for a walk around the market, which is busy but the vendors aren't as pushy and insistent on you buying something as they are in Vietnam which is nice. It's nice to be able to look at things freely. After that we decide to check out the famous pub street. Usually, these streets are the most expensive places for drinks, but not this one. Beer is 50 cents, and we soon take one of the bars up on that offer.
It is a strange day. Drinking draft beer in the sun gives a feeling of being on holiday that you don't often get whilst travelling. It's a lovely, relaxing afternoon in the sun, helped along by a lovely Welsh couple who are sat next to us.
After the beers we grab some nachos which taste delicious and head back, ready for the sleep that daytime drinking often leads to. I wake up pretty late, but still with a taste for beer, so we head out to pub street again. I want to try a fried tarantula but bottle it at the last minute. We have a few more drinks and head back, ready to see Angkor Wat tomorrow morning!

  • Chamraoen's Home, Siem Reap, Day 1

    23. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

It's another travel day, and this one promises to be the longest journey we will take in Cambodia. It is meant to be about 6 hours, and by 7.30 we are sat on the bus ready to go.
The first 3 hours i spend watching a very interesting George Harrison documentary, and it doesn't seem like the journey will be too bad. We swap onto a smaller bus for the final leg of the journey, and soon realise it will be a lot longer then we first thought.
It is pretty uncomfortable, and ends up taking a horrible 8 and a half hours. We arrive in Siem Reap just after 4pm and are ready to relax a bit. A tuk tuk takes us to our hotel and we pray it is nice. What we see when we enter is much better then we expected. It's a huge room, clean, tidy, and with working air conditioning! Just what we need after the journey of today.
We are pretty tired after it all, so we go out to get some food before settling in for the night and relaxing, ready to explore Siem Reap tomorrow.

  • Heng Heng Hotel, Kratie, Day 2

    22. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Amy is still not feeling well today, and our plan of getting up early and biking to see the dolphins soon goes to pot. We wait in the room hoping Amy will feel enough at some point of the day.
It soon reaches 1 o clock and we decide to take the lunge. We've heard it's not a bad ride so we decide on bikes, which we soon regret after we leave the nice coastal path and head onto a bumpy dirt road that makes pedalling on our one gear bikes very hard. The ten mile ride takes well over an hour in the boiling heat, but we eventually make it. Amy still doesn't feel great, but is glad to get off the bike and onto the Mekong where there is a bit of a breeze.
We pay for an hour on the boat, and about 25 minutes in Amy is the only one of us to have caught a glimpse of one of the very endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Soon 4 more boats join us though, and we soon spot where the dolpins are. The rest of the time is spent watching them regularly popping up for air, some in pairs, some right near the boat. It is lovely when all the boat engines are turned off and all you can hear is the lapping of the oars and the occasional water breaking when a dolphin appears.
The hour goes quuickly and we are soon back on the bikes, ready for the ten miles home. It's another long, painful journey, with Amy on the point of vomiting most of the way, but the views of the Sun setting over the Mekong make if worth it (for me, not Amy).
After we finally get back we have our last meal in Kratie, and prepare for our early start and bus to Siem Reap tomorrow! It has been very short, but Kratie is another Mekong riverside town that i would definitely reccomend for a visist.

  • Heng Heng Hotel 2, Kratie, Day 1

    21. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

So it's onto Kratie we go. We get up slowly and have another great breakfast before waitig for our tuk tuk driver to drive us to the bus station. Of course, he is late, but then of course so is the bus so no problems.
It's a nicely empty bus and we have a quite relaxing and comfortable 3 hour journey, despite the incredibly bumpy road.
As we arrive in Kratie, the heat is incredible. Luckily, our hotel is right next to the bus stop, so we soon get in and settled. The room is hot, not monkey republic hot, but hot. To rub it in more, we have an air con machine in our room that we aren't allowed to use as we paid for a fan room.
We plan to go for an explore, before realising we have lost our suncream, so our explore soon becomes a shopping trip. After finding some in one of the first shops, we decide to look for some cheaper, only to not find anymore and spend about half an hour looking for the first shop again. All this while walking in the boiling sun with no sun cream.
We finally get it sorted and go back to the room to escape the sun. Amy then sends me out to buy some water, and thank god she did. As i step out i am greeted by one of the best sunsets I have seen so far this trip. The sky is all different colours as the Sun quickly drops down below the trees on the side of he Mekong. It is a great 30 minutes spent on the hotel balcony staring out at this amazing scene.
After the sunset we go out for one of the worst meals we have had so far. I have the famous cambodian dish of spaghetti carbonara that tastes even more flavourless then plain pasta, and Amy tried tofu amok, and soon vows to never try it again.
After that we go back and go to sleep in the heat. Our alarm is set for 7.30 ready to make the most of our second day in Kratie tomorrow.

  • Sunrise Villa, Kampong Cham, Day 2

    20. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ 🌧 5 °C

Our second day in Kampog Cham soon comes around and we are greeted with a lovely free breakfast (not bad seen as though the room is 2 quid each a night!) We immediately rent a bicycle each and head off in the hope he rumours are false and the bamboo bridge is still standing.
We set off through the delightful town, and soon get to the spot where the bamboo bridge used to be. Unfortunately it has gone, but we keep to the plan of heading to the island anyway, and cross over the concrete bridge that is now in it's place.
The island is a great place to have a bike around. As you slowly go through the villages it is so interesting to see the lives of the people who live here. Most of the houses are wooden shacks built on high wooden stands to avoid flooding. Every child is waving and screaming the phrases they have obviously been taught in shool (Hello, What's your name, Where you from) and all the adults are smiling and welcoming.
The strangeness of the place is the fact you cycle along, and then out of the blue are met with huge, lavish temples that shadow the small houses opposite. The loop around the island is maybe about 15km, but due to it being mostly mud tracks, it is very hard on the legs, and we are glad when we cross over the bridge and get sat down for some dinner. Fish and chips, which is definitely my first meal when i get back, is surprisingly tasty out here.
We cycle back after dinner and settle in the room. The balcony is great for chilling out and reading as the sun goes down and the immense heat dwindles slightly. The owner of the homestay cooks us some very tasty noodles and we settle in for the night. Like Kampot and Kep, Kampong Cham is somewhere you can cover in a couple of days, so we are moving on tomorrow to Kratie.

  • Sunrise Villa, Kampong Cham, Day 1

    19. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

So we leave Phnom Penh and head off to Kampong Cham. It is the third biggest city in Cambodia apparently, but you can't tell when you arrive. As we get off the bus it is impossible not to notice how empty the roads are and how quiet the place is. It is lovely.
We get a tuk tuk to the homestay we are staying at and chill out in the room for a few hours. It has been a long few days of walking and we are glad for a bit of rest. After that we head off to the town on a couple of bicycles for a little explore. We grab something to eat (i try lok lak, which is a local dish which consists of beef in a spicy gravy style sauce and is pretty good) before a friendly tuk tuk driver comes and talks to us. He informs us that the bamboo bridge, one of the main tourist attractions of Kampong Cham, has been removed and replaced with a larger concrete one. We're disappointed but can't really complain at the locals making their lives a lot easier for themselves! All in all though Kampong Cham is a delightfully pleasant town, and the riverside benches and bars are lovely as we look out on the Mekong for the second time this trip.
After eating we start the very dark and rather scary cycle back. The potholes in the road that we can't really see and the lack of knowledge of the area means we are pretty glad when we get back to the nice room we have in the homestay (4 pound a night!).
It's strange that you can have long days of cycling or walking and yet the days you feel most tired are the travelling days. It just seems to suck the energy from us, so we have a quiet night, ready for an explore tomorrow!

  • KIM Guesthouse, Phnom Penh, Day 4

    18. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

It's another slow morning as Amy's illness still won't back off. By the time the clock reaches almost 11 though, I manage to drag her out of bed for another spot of walking. As it is our last day we plan to see the remaining sights that Phnom Penh has to offer.
Firstly, we head to the independence monument. It is a brilliant sculpture that was built to commemorate Cambodia becoming independent when the French left. It stands tall on a lovely park which runs through the middle of the road. Behind it is another monument, this one a statue of King Sihanouk surrounded by pillars. Wat Langka is a lovely temple just over the road, and we stoo for a quick look while we are there. As I mentioned before it is very strange to be in Phnom Penh were packed, bustling streets can turn into beautiful monuments or temples at the turn of a corner.
After thay we get dinner and book our bus to Kampong Cham (travel seems a lot more expensive here then it was in Vietnam!) Before heading off towards the Royal Palace again.
It is another unbearably hot day, so our relief when we leave the busy streets and reach the breezy riverside is enormous. We spend a bit of time sat facing the river, embracing the fact we weren't sweating profusely. We decide not to pay the 10 dollar entrance fee to the Royal Palace and stare through the gate instead. It looks like an incredible structure as these places often are.
The final two stops are the national museum, which again we decide against, and, after stopping for a refreshing beer, we head to Wat Phnom. It's another extraordinary place, but the heat and distance we have walked means our minds are firmly on the air conditioned room waiting for us. So, After six hours of trekking, we head back, picking up a couple of sandwiches for tea on the way, and a few beers that I can watch the North London Derby with later.
Phnom Penh has been great, but we feel we have done it now, and are ready for a change of scenery tomorrow!

  • KIM Guesthouse, Phnom Penh, Day 3

    17. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ 🌙 31 °C

Thankfully Amy feels a bit brighter today, so we decide to visit the infamous Killing Fields where thousands of bodies were executed and buried in one of the most horrific crimes not just the country, but the World has ever seen.
Our tuk tuk driver picks us up at nine and we set off on the dusty journey to Chuong Ek. After eating some breakfast we head inside, and the thing that immediately catches your eye is the monument built in rememberance of all the people who lost their lives here. That will be the last stop on our very informative tour though, so we head away and follow the track round. As we go we hear about what used to stand in the places we stand now. Huts that were used as jails, huts to store weapons, places where the prisoners were dropped off, and places were they were brutally beaten to death (bullets were too expensive to waste) are all on the path we walk now. It's a strange harrowing place. As you walk along either side of you are mass graves, now just divvets in the ground. I don't remember the exact number, but I think it is around 9000 bodies that were found here.
The audiguide is great, givig great information on why and how all this happened, and telling stories of survivors and people who didn't manage to survive. One of the final stops is a tree that was used to swing babies against until they were dead. Next to the tree is a grave that he bodies were thrown into like rubbish. 'To kill the tree, you have to destroy the roots' was the idea. As the tour ends we find ourselves at the monument mentioned earlier. It is full with the bones of the victims, with the first several of 17 tiers taken up with skulls. It is a horrendous yet oddly beaufitul place. As is most of the Killig Fields. The juxtaposition of the peaceful lake and nice scenerh that now sits there compared to what happened here is hard to wrap your head around. A crazy, thougjt provoking place that will linger long in the memory.
Before prisoners were taken to Chuong Ek to be killed, most were held at Tuol Sleng prison, a former shool that the Khmer Rogue took over when they took control of Cambodia. It is here that we head after a few hours relaxing in the room.
The first thing you notice as you walk towards the prison (now a museum) is the barbed wire that still surrounds it. In a way the prison seems more horrific than the killing fields, mostly because it has been kept in mostly the exact conditions that it was in when the Khmer Rogue were ousted in1979.
There are cells with single beds in them. When the prison was emptied, these rooms all contained single bodies, strapped or shackled to the bed. The bodies are now buried outside. Pictures near the beds show the bodies as they were found. None of the people who died in these rooms could be named.
After that we head through the different blocks looking at the tiny cells, either made of stone or wood, that must have been awful to lay in on your own, let alone with other people. It is a hard place to walk around, as you hear of the torture that went on to gain falso confessions from everyone that entered.
One of the main features of the museum is the walls and walls of portraits that were taken as identification of the prisoners. The faces, mostly holding looks of fear and defeat stare out at you pleading for help. Women and children number almost the same as men. I may be wrong again with the number but i think they said around 20000 prisoners were taken in here. I will never forget the number of survivors, 12.
It's a long two hours, and when we leave we feel drained. It has been an exhausting day and a lot to take in. We grab some pizza on the way back, before relaxing in the room again, hoping the final remnants of Amy's illness will be gone by the morning!

  • KIM gueshouse, Phnom Penh, Day 2

    16. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

So we get up and amy still doesn't feel up to scratch. After a slow morning we head off for an explore of Phnom Penh.
Our aim is to reach the Royal palace, and after half an hour of walking in the immense heat I realise I have read the map wrong and we are going the wrong way. We jump in a tuk tuk that takes us there, but we are faced with a roadblock manned with a big bunch of policemen. We're not sure what's going on so we jump onto the back of a tour and follow them in until we reach the palace.
Unfortunately it's more money then we have in our wallets to get in, so we head off down the very pretty streets. Phnom Penh is a strange place, with busy packed places making way for lovely parks and temples at random places. You never really know what you're going to find when you turn a corner here.
Amy still doesn't feel great so we get some money from an ATM, have some dinner, and head back to realx for the rest of the day, hoping she will feel better in the morning.

  • KIM Guesthouse, Phnom Penh, Day 1

    15. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Since getting to Cambodia, we've not really had a long bus journey, so to say I'm looking forward to the day ahead as I wake would be a lie. We get out of the room after another sleepless night, and get our free breakfast. I don't really mind the noise. It's a party hostel so it's kind of expected to be loud, but Amy is pretty fuming.
After eating and saying bye to Reuben, Olga and Sandro, we head onto the ferry. It's a lot less busy then last time and a lot more enjoyable. We are then back in Sihanoukville, where wequickly grab a bus to Phnom Penh. Thankfully it's a big air-conditioned bus, and we're not crammed into the back of a tiny mini van. The journey isn't that bad until we reach the outskirts of Phnom Penh and hit the trafffic. We probably spend around 90 minutes moving very slowly before we finally jump off. Amy is feeling unwell and as been on the verge of throwing up for the last hour, so we don't bother haggling the tuk tuk drivers, and we just jump straight in to get to our hotel quickly.
The room is delightful. It has air-con, TV, and is remarkably quiet. Just what we need. After getting some food, we go to bed, very much looking forward to an uninterrupted nights sleep!

  • Bong's Guesthouse, Koh Rong, Day 2

    14. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

So it's the morning and both of us have had a rather sleepless night. We manage to drag ourselves out of bed for the free breakfast and meet the other three. Last night we had promised to go on a trek with them today, but that was before last night. Fortunately for us, they were kept up as well (they stayed in the dorm and as well as the noise, had a sick soaked bathroom to cope with). So we all decide a shorter walk is in order. We head out after Sandro gets a new hotel, and after around quarter of an hour, find 4k beach. As with most places here, it's a beautiful stretch of white sand and crystal clear sea.
A young Cambodian girl entertains us for a while by being crazy, as we dip in and out of the water and Reuben shares some beers around. This was just what we needed after last night. As midday crawls around, Amy is in the sea with the little girl trying to catch fish in a water bottle, and the rest of us are either laying on the beach, or floating on the water. Apart from Sandro, who is surprisingly agile on the water for such a large man.
As dinner comes around we eat on the beach, before deciding to rest in some deck chairs. It doesn't take long for every one of us to be fast asleep. It is over an hour later when we all wake. Reuben is seriously burnt, and we're all still pretty knackered, so we drag Sandro from the water where he has been the full time we've been sleeping, and head back to the hotel.
We all go out for tea again, before a final walk on the beach, and our final night in Koh Rong is over (when the music stops at 2)

  • Bong's Guesthouse, Koh Rong, Day 1

    13. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

So it's time to leave the smelly, damp room that we have grown to dislike quite a lot, and move onto the beachfront. Bong's Guesthouse is our next stop, and we soon get up and put our still wet clothes that we have tried to dry for days in a damp room in our bags, and set off for the short journey. We get there and meet Reuben and Olga who we met in Dalat/Mui Ne/Ho Chi Minh, and a Swiss man called Sandro.
After yesterday we are after a much more relaxed day today, so after enjoying a free coffee at the guesthouse we head out for a short stroll. After around ten minutes walking we stumble across a small, empty beach, that is perfect for an hour chilling out. This island is truly amazing at surprising you with random, amazing spots.
We chill there for a bit before we head back to the hostel and check in. The room is very open but okay for the price we are paying. We then chill out in the hostel, making the most of the nice weather.
As night draws in, we fancy a few beers, so, along with Reuben, Olga and Sandro, we grab something to eat and head back to the hostel, making the most of all day happy hour. We then head out to a quiet bar/restaurant where we have a few more Klang's, before heading back. As them three opt to go for a walk, me and Amy sit on the beach having a night cap whilst listening to the waves. It's times like this you think you could stay here for weeks.
As we get back to the hostel, hoping for some sleep, we realise just how thin the ceilings and walls are in this place. There is a party going on downstairs until around 2 AM, and the guests don't stop leaving until around 5. This isn't great when we can hear every music beat and conversation like it was coming from the other side of our room. It's a long night, and we have another one to go yet.

  • Happy Elephant, Koh Rong, Day 2

    12. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

It's boat tour day! It mercifully doesn't start until midday, so we have a chilled out morning. Thank God as the tour is a long one!
We start out on the boat with a free beer each, before taking in two snorkelling spots around the islands that surround Koh Rong. While the fish and coral may not be as impressive as Nha Trang, at least there is no jellyfish. It is still good to see all the fish, but the sea urchins look pretty terrifying on the rocks.
After around 90 minutes we head to Koh Rong Samloem. It is Koh Rong's small neighbour, and after eating a nice dinner, we head off for a small explore of the sleepy island. It's very chilled out and untouched, with only a few roads lined with hostels on the beach. After a small walk we head to the Dragonfly Bar to look at the amazing view.
We then get back on that boat and have more free beer and whisky, before landing on a secluded beach that only has one bar! A game of volleyball that is sometimes very competitive but always very fun takes place, and I join in to my teams disadvantage as Amy reads her book near the water.
The next stop is another beach where we have a bonfire and get a free cocktail, before we get on the boat again for some swimming with plankton.
It is an experience you have to see to believe, as hundreds of plankton light up around you in the pitch black water. The darkness of the water makes it rather scary, as me and Amy sometimes shout for each other as we drift apart, but it all adds to what is a truly remarkable sight. It's like wading through stars in the sky that disperse as you push your hands through them. A great end to a great tour.
We head back with more free beer to the pier where we begun, and grab some dinner before getting some much needed relaxation. Reuben and Olga from several hotels we have been at arrive today and we plan to get boozy in a new hotel with them tomorrow, so for now, it's time for bed!

  • Happy Elephant, Koh Rong, Day 1

    11. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We are sad to leave the air conditioned room in the morning, but we do have a ferry to catch. After packing our stuff and heading out again, we get to the pier in time to check on to our journey and enjoy a cuppa before going.
The ferry is rather bumpy to begin with but it soon steadies as we head off in the direction of the island. It takes around 45 minutes, and we are soon pulling up at one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The beaches look white and clean, and an incredibly inviting white sea. It truly is an amazing place and we already want to stay forever.
After checking into our hotel and enjoying a breakfast burrito at the White Rose bar (tasty!) We head off to the beach. To say I like a beach shows it's good as they're not often my favourite places. It's not overcrowded and the sea stretches as far as the eye can see.
After dipping in and out to cool off (summers are hot in Cambodia surprisingly) we go for an explore. As we go, We stumble upon more beaches that look equally nice. It will take us a while to get bored of this place.
We are planning on having a few drinks, but after booking onto a tour for tomorrow, we decide to have a chilled out night so we're not feeling rough. What a place to he staying!

  • Dive Shop, Sihanoukville, Day 1

    10. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

It's time to move on today, and we leave the boiling hot room behind and get packed onto an almost hotter minibus that is completely packed. The ride to Sihanoukville isn't too long fortunately, but we still have nowhere to stay and no ferry ticket to koh rong.
We stop off for a burger in Sihanoukville and try and book a place to stay in Koh Rong, but everywhere seems booked up. As we are eating, the heavens open with the kind of rainfall that puts England to shame.
We finally decide it's not worth going over to the island yet, so agree to spend a night in Sihanoukville. After walking for around ten minutes in the rain, we follow a sign offering a room at the Dive Shop. Incredibly, it's not too expensive and air conditioned! I immediately fall asleep, catching up on the sleep i missed out on because it was too hot in Kampot.
It's almost dark by the time we wake, and we head out for some food. Sihanoukville didn't look great during the day, but it definitely comes alive at night. After eating some good Mexican food, we wander down to the beach and enjoy some cold beers. It's a nice night, but we feel we have seen enough of this place already. Roll on Koh Rong tomorrow.

  • Monkey Republic, Kampot, Day 2

    9. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

An early rise today as we plan to head up to Bokor National Park. We have been told it is far away, so we rent a moped and set off (slowly). After around 45 minutes of driving we decide toe at and follow a rather faded sign to a restaurant called Greenhouse. It doesn't look great as we head down a dirt road, but we get a very pleasant surprise as we arrive at a riverside spot that serves delicious food. Poached eggs done to perfection.
After asking the waiter the way to the park and realising we're going the wrong way, we head back the way we came, and, after another 45 minute drive, we arrive at the gates to the park. As soon as we pull off the road and onto the deserted park the tenseness of rising bikes out here leaves and it becomes great fun. The roads bend around the mountain, sharp corners mixed with long, looping ones, and the views are simply insane. We head up and up, the weather getting cooler and cooler, and after around an hour of very fun riding, we reach the main sight seeing points.
There is an old anandoned station that would have given a great view down if it wasn't surrounded by cloud. The same with a church that had a supposedly great viewpoint that was aswell covered in cloud. The cloud gave a different kind of view, as we looled down at an eery abyss, hearing nothing but the singing of thousands of birds. The buildings themselves were good to see. They were spooky reminders of what used to be here.
On the way back down we passed by a waterfall that didn't offer great views really as you could only stand to the side of it. Amy then decided she wanted to practise driving on the roads, so she took control and handled the bike much better then i can. She ended up driving all the way back, the last view we passed was a seriesof loads of rocks that had many other stones placed on top of them. It was very blair witch.
We rode back down the lovely hills, taking in the stunning views once more, before getting back to the hotel.
We ate another curry, before going back to the room, hoping to get some more sleep, and for no more powercuts.

  • Monkey Republic, Kampot, Day 1

    8. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

So it's the last day of our short trip to Kep, and we awake to a blazing row between Charles and Rachia (I think that's the right name). We were meant to be getting a bus at ten but we cancel during breakfast and end up taking a ride with a tuk tuk driver. It's a much funner and comfortable way to travel, compared to being rammed into the back of a minibus. The ride is only 20km so we soon get there after travelling through small villages.
We arrive to the hotel and check in to our room/sauna (again no air conditioning). We would like to chill in the room for a bit but we need to escape the heat, so go for a small walk to a bank to get some money and then grab some dinner. After that we rent s couple of bikes and decide to explore Kampot. It's a lovely, peaceful town (i am told it is technically a big village) built alongisde a long river.
It is this river that we decided to take a cruise on tonight. We board a rather rickety looking boat along with four other couples and set off at around 5pm. The first hour is spelt looking at the beatuiful hills as the sun drifts behind them. It is truly an amazing sight and the quiet surroundings make it all the better. It is crazy how quick the bright sun descends and soon it is pitch black, with noting but the hotels and the distant lightning lighting up our way.
We are told there are a lot of fireflys around this area, but are running out of hope of finding one when our boat takes a sudden stop, nearly smashing into a tree. We walk to the end of the boat and finally see the small lights buzzing around. There are so many it resembles a chrismtas tree all lit up and sparkling. After that we head back, have a curry, and retire to the warm bedroom hoping to try and sleep. A power cut turning the fans up doesn't help, neither does the thunderous rain outside that is hammering the roof. We somehow manage it though, but it's going to be a sweaty night!

  • Dathika Bungalows, Kep, Day 2

    7. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

It's a bright and early start. After spending a while trying to get a frog out of the room that we wasn't sure was safe to touch, we had breakfast (butter!) before heading off on a walk to the national park.
It's a hot day as summer is setting in in Cambodia, and even just the walk to the park is hard. It's here we have our first taste of Cambodian money and the way it works. Pay in dollars, get real as change, or dollars. It will take some getting used to I assume.
Anyway, we take the 6km hike around the park, taking in the beautiful views of the land and sea on the way. Add to that the monekys that swing freely on the trees and it is very enjoyable. The path is actually a proper path, and after what we've heard about some of the bugs out here (killer centipedes) we are glad we aren't climbing through the jungle.
The pah around the park finishes on a deserted road. It is so quiet and peaceful compared to the South of Vietnam and it really does fill you with some tranquility after all the chaos. We walk down the road to the pier, walking past some of the famous abandoned mansions and statues on the way, the best of which is the giant crab standing offshore.
We then eat, paying in real, before realising we only have 1 dollar left and the walk is around 2 miles uphill.
We start off back after Amy has a dip in the sea as more monkeys casually stroll past and begin the walk back. On the way we walk past the crab market, which is as smelly and chaotic as expected, before a tuk tuk driver agrees to drive us home for a dollar.
We get in, shower, relax for a bit, before going to eat. There is no food and the american (Charles) gives us a tuk tuk to drive down to the market for food. I choose too but soon regret it. The steering wheel barely works, as do the brakes. As we get to the market i realise the handbrake doesn't work either, so we decide it's best to go back (we didn't know automatica have a p gear for parking that locks the wheels).
Charles then gets in a pretty heated agument wih his girlfriend and offers to drive us to the market and wait while we pick up food. An offer we accept happily. We go grab some and then go back to the hotel and eat, before having some more beers and going to sleep. Tomorrow it is time for Kep's small neighbour, Kampot.

  • Dathika bungalow, Kep, Day 1

    6. november 2017, Cambodja ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Hello Cambodia! It's time to move on today, and the bus to take us to the ferry is late as per usual in Vietnam. It get's us there in time though, and before we know it, the ferry has taken us back to Ha Tien.
A guy is waiting for us and packs eight of us into a minibus. We drive to a small shop to sort out our visas, and me and amy are first in queue so hand over our money ($37 we are told but the exchange rate she gives means it's more like 40). Then the rest of the bus decide it's a rip off and decided to pay on the border (it is a lot slower and a lot more hassle but costs around $3 less).
We get through quickly and then have to wait for them on the other side before our journey to Kep. It takes around an hour probably to get over the border, then around another hour to get to Kep. As we open the minibus, a swarm of tuk-tuk drivers descends and we end up jumping in the back of one for the 2 mile trip to our hotel. It's a fun and breezy ride.
When we get to the hotel, we check into a room before sitting in the bar with three workers. One, a 46 year old french guy is the main man behind the bar, and the others, a 24 year old cambodian woman and a 44 year old american are a couple. They are good fun, despite the woman being pretty psyhotic at times towards her boyfriend (the american). The chef is away, and Amy is giving a free go at the kitchen which is full of cheese and eggs, so we end up tucking into a cheesey omelette baguette which tastes amazing after hardly eating all day. It's pretty entertaining wathid the staff, and Amy has two puppies and two kittens to play with, so he night goes pretty quickly.
It's been a long day, and after a few beers we feel tired, so go to our small bungalow to sleep. It's a lovely place, despite the odd scratching sounds in the roof that leave me awake for a few hours, waiting for a rat to land on my head!

  • House No.1, Phu Quoc, Day 4

    5. november 2017, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

It's my birhday! Amy wakes me up with a cake adorned with a 2 and a 6 candle that is delicious and some great presents! She also says i can choose what to do all day (which is good news as arsenal are playing later).
For some reason, i have had the film mean machine in my head since yesterday, so we watch that in bed eating m and ms before heading out to book our travel to cambodia and eat some crab soup.
After that we chill in the room and get sorted for tomorrow, before heading out to the beach for he sunset. It really is worth visiting the island just for the sunset on the beach. Havig a few beers watching it go down is great, even when some grey clouds come over threatening to spoil it!
After that we go out for a bite to eat in a restaurant that bizarrely has happy birthday painted in big letters on a wall above a table. We feel we can't not sit there, and are glad we did as the food is good and the staff very friendly. They even bring me free birthday desserts of warm coconut and a weird creme caramel drenched in cold coffee thing. The taste isn't great, but the thought is very nice.
After that we go to a beer to watch arsenal lose. I swear they always lose on my birthday so it's not a real surprise. We then go back to the hostel, where the staff have all remembered and wished me happy birthday which is nice. They bring out some complimentary shots and sing happy birhday before we play a tune on the guitar while some people sing. It's a great end to a great birthday, and a great emd to a great trip. Tomorrow we are up early for our trip to cambodia. Time to see what else South East Asia has to offer!

  • House No.1, Phu Quoc, Day 3

    4. november 2017, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

After a day of rest yesterday, we are up early feelig ready to go this morning. The plan is to take a nice ride around the south of the island, taking in the sights along the way.
We arrive back near the first hotel and have some breakfast whilst hunting for some bicycles. They are hars to find, but we eventually get some, before heading off on the hopefully scenic ride.
We soon realise the ride isn't quite what we thought. First off, it's around 15 miles each way, and secondly, it's along the side of a main road.
We arrive at sao beach after over an hour of pedalling. The beach is nice, but maybe slightly underwhelming in contrast to the many great reviews we had heard. We have some food staring out at the clear sea, before getting back on the bikes and starting the journey back.
It's a different route this time, and it's definitelymore enjoyable. There are a few viewpoints and sights we intend to go to on the way, but we either miss them or they are at the top of steep hills that our stuck-in-high-gear bikes can't handle. It is a much nicer ride though and we get some nice views of the hills and countryside of the island.
We arrive back in duong dong wih tired legs, and jump into a taxi back to the hotel. We eat again in the veggie restaurant before going back to the room. We're both knackered, so stay in bed as an incredibly loud bar crawl passes by downstairs. Tomorrow is my birhday, and also the final full day we have of our travels in vietnam!

    3. november 2017, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Well last nights drinking is definitely still being felt this morning. Pretty much the whole day is spent in the room listening to amy retching into plastic bags. On the one venture out, we go to the veggie restaurant next door and amy has some chips, leavig me plenty of food to eat. We then treat ourselves to a strawberry crepe (for me) and a nutella and banana ice cream roll (for Amy) from the night market. After that, it is time for an early night, hoping tomorrow will be a more energetic day!Læs mere

  • House No.1, Phu Quoc, Day 1

    2. november 2017, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

So it's time to move on. We move as late as possible after a nice lie in and then turn up to a locked hostel. After waiting a while for the woman next door to call the staff and let us in, we are finally shown to a nice room.
After getting settled we then go out and buy me a new phone, walking through a rather strange market selling dogs heads and more on the way. After that we plan on a slighlty boozy night, and have a few beers in the room before taking in the night market for some pancakes and sausages.
We then plan to eat properly somewhere, but are dragged into our hostel for a few drinking games, which turns into a lot of drinking games. I then get a chance to play a guitar as the vietnamese staff sing karaoke. We play all sorts of songs you wouldn't expect, ranging from the cranberries to robbie williams.
It's about midnight by the time i go to bed, and i find amy hugging the toilet. I manage to drag her to bed, but the bin in the room is slowly filling up. It's gonna be a fun day tomorrow.

  • Thuong Thinh, Phu Quoc, Day 3

    1. november 2017, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We get up early and head for the bus stop to take us to the safari today. We make it to the safari at quarter to ten, just in time for an impressive bird/monkey show.
We then walk around the zoo for most of the day. It's a good zoo, better then saigon, and we get to feed elephants. There are also monkeys that just jump in and out of cages when they feel like it which makes it pretty fun/scary. Added to that there are tigers/lions/bears and plenty more.
We then take the safari which is great. There are lions and rhinos running about in the closest thing ive ever seen to a natural environment, and a hell of a lot of girafes and zebras and more. A great day, but after five hours of wandering we decide to go back and relax.
A quiet night now as we have to move on to a different hotel in the morning. We go out for a nice meal and then grab a few beers and chill out in the room watching harry potter.

  • Thuong Thinh, Phu Quoc, Day 2

    31. oktober 2017, Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We have a slow morning today, making the most of the chance to have a lie in (god knows how we are going to go back to actual jobs) before heading to the beach. We manage to get some sunbeds, and settle down for a relaxing day.
The beach is lovely, white sand and clear water. If you forget about the jellyfish floating about, it is lovely. As it gets to mid afternoon, the clouds come in though, and as rain starts to drop, we head back to the hotel. We chill out for a bit, before going out for tea (2 for 1 pizza!) And then have a quiet night. A slow day, but a much needed one!
