Exploring Eyre Peninsula.

Seals, Old Towns & Giant Rocks
We’ve been a bit slack with the travel diary for the last couple of days, so time for a catch-up!
Yesterday was one of those days where we didn’t have to tow the van anywhere — always a nice change. We left it happily parked at Streaky Bay and headed off exploring.
First stop was Sceale Bay. A pretty little coastal settlement, although if we’re being fair, it probably wasn’t the highlight of the day. From there we continued around the coast to Cape Labatt, and this one certainly was.
The viewing platform sits high above the ocean with fantastic views down onto the rocks and beach below, where we could see a colony of Australian sea lions lounging around at the water’s edge. A spectacular coastline and definitely worth the drive.
Then it was through Baird Bay and on to Calca, an old settlement where there’s not a great deal left these days. The old buildings and church give you just enough to imagine what life must have been like out here when it was a little farming community.
And then came one of the day’s real curiosities — Murphy’s Haystacks.
Despite the name, they’re obviously not haystacks at all, but huge weathered granite formations sitting rather unexpectedly in the middle of farmland. Some of the shapes are bizarre, and naturally we wandered around deciding what each one looked like.
By then sightseeing had worked up an appetite, so it was back to Streaky Bay for a rather late lunch and a quiet afternoon at the caravan park.

Today we’re moving again. The van is hooked up and we’re making our way south towards Port Lincoln, where we’ll spend the next few nights.
First stop for the day: Venus Bay. Another little Eyre Peninsula coastal town, another jetty, and another excuse to stop, stretch the legs and have a look around. And it’s really nice.
We’re in no great hurry. And that, we’re discovering, is one of the best things about travelling this way.Read more
