Antarctica 2024

We are cruising Antartica, visiting Ushuaia, Falkland Islands and South Georgia, a bucket list for many years. Fingers crossed we have the Drake Lake not the Drake Shake. Stayed tuned for lots of photos of the penguins, seals and hopefully whales. Read more

  • Prison Museum

    The museum was originally a prison due to it's geographical isolation, which until 1947, was the most feared prison in the country.

  • Hotel Albatros

    Our hotel for the next few days before our cruise.

    It is a basic small room with very slow internet so we use the local cafe to do our computer work and to update Find Penguins.

  • Lighthouse at the end of the World

    This is the oldest lighthouse in Argentina and the first lighthouse in history that was built on southern waters. Even though it was built in 1884, it was not until 1905 that it became known as the End of the World Lighthouse thanks to a novel by Jules Verne. At that time, the lighthouse represented the entrance to “the unknown” since the boats were entering Antarctica.Read more

  • Tierra del Fuego National Park

    Argentina's southernmost protected area protects Andean-Patagonian forests where Andes Mountains meet with the sea in the Beagle Channel, which connects the Atlantic and South Pacific oceans.

    The land of fires (Tierra del Fuego) name was given by the explorers when they saw the bonfires lit by the original inhabitants of the island, the Yámanas.

    Tierra del Fuego National Park which was created in 1960, is a protected area located at the south-west of Tierra del Fuego province, next to the international border of the Republic of Chile. It protects 68,909
    hectares of Los Andes Cordilera’s southermost extreme, on a range that goes from Injoo Goiyin o de Beauvoir, to the north of Fagnano lake and the Beagle Channel’s coast

  • Mirador Paso Garibaldi

    This is the area where we crossed the Andes without going into Chile as the Andes changes direction from North to South to East West. The view was spectacular. Imagine it on a clear day how pretty it would be.Read more

  • Fagnano Lake

    Fagnano Lake also called Lake Cami, it is a lake located on the main island of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and shared by Argentina and Chile. The 645 km sq lake runs east–west for about 98 kilometres, of which 72.5 km belongs to the Argentine Tierra del Fuego Province, and only 13.5 km belongs to Chile. It was so windy and cold, however, if the weather had been on our side, it would be very pretty.Read more

  • Beaver Dam

    Beavers were introduced to Ushuaia to assist with their economy. However, as Ushuaia does not have predators to the Beaver, their population has grown so much that they are now pests and can be legally killed. The devastation of the forest is incredible. The Beavers create dams that flood the area and the trees cannot survive due to the amount of water.Read more
