    Jokhang Temple

    16 мая 2019 г., Китай ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Jokhang Temple is in Barkhor Square Tibetians consider this temple as the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. The temple architecture is a mixture of Indian, Tibetian and Nepalease design. It was established in the 7th century. It was impressive inside but unfortunately we could not take photo's which is a shame as the budhas and statues are incredible but I found some on google. Again really hard to learn anything about the temple but hopefully we can find some information when back in Nepal or even Sydney. Both Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple are impressive buildings with so much history and knowledge of Buddhism it is worth reading about.Читать далее

    On a Mission

    16 мая 2019 г., Китай ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We went back to Old Town in search of something simple for dinner. Old Town is only a 10min walk away. We walked for nearly 2 hours and could not really find something suitable. So we are back at the Hotel restaurant for pizza.

The walk in Old Town was great though all the locals are out selling different sorts of food and some of the shops were still open.

More Monasteries today each one is a little different but essentially the same.

Dreprung Monastery was built in 1416. Over 10,000 monks resided here making it the largest monastery in Tibet. It has 6 main temples, 3 monastic colleges. The monastery covers an area of 200,000 square metres.

Again we walked heaps of stairs just to get to the monastery and then there are plenty more stairs inside. We only visited 2 of the temples but still very interesting.

    Mount Everest here we come

    19 мая 2019 г., Непал ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Yeh, today we saw Mount Everest.

We finally have been able to catch our scenic flight to see Mount Everest. The flight was a little delayed but all good.

The hostess on the plane was lovely during the flight she come around individually and pointed out the different mountains including Mount Everest. Each person was allowed to go to the cockpit and view the mountains from the front of the plane. Then to celebrate viewing the infamous mountain called Mount Everest we received a glass of bubbles.

Not sure I can tick this off the bucket list as it is not base camp. In the future I think we will just have to go back to Tibet and do Everest Base Camp from there as apparently the view of the peak is better and you can basically drive directly to it. Sounds like a plan.

    19 мая 2019 г., Непал ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We continued walking around Thamel Dustmandu looking in a number of stores for a Nepalise game called Moving Tiger which John had researched and found out about. Apparently it is not something tourists ask for as in the stores which had them they were found hidden away and covered in dust. We did find quite a nice one which was a little more expensive than we wanted to pay but we thought that it would be a great and interesting souvenier from Nepal and that we could teach the A Team and Charlie how to play. It is unlike any other game we have played. John even played a game with the store owner to see how it went and he lost.Читать далее

    Bhutan

    20 мая 2019 г., Бутан ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Bhutan is the last great Himalayan kingdom, shrouded in mystery and magic, where a traditional Buddhist culture carefully embraces global developments.

The Bhutanese pride themselves on a sustainable approach to tourism in line with the philosophy of Gross National Happiness. Foreign visitors famously pay a minimum tariff of US$250 per day, making it seem one of the world's more expensive destinations. However, this fee is all-inclusive – accommodation, food, transport and an official guide are all provided, so it's not a bad deal. You don't have to travel in a large group and you can arrange your own itinerary. What you won't find is budget backpacker-style travel.

Bhutan holds many surprises. It is a country where the rice is red and where chillies aren't just a seasoning but the main dish. It's also a deeply Buddhist land, where monks check their smartphones after performing a divination, and where giant protective penises are painted beside the entrance to many houses. Yet while it visibly protects its Buddhist traditions, Bhutan is not a museum. You will find the Bhutanese well educated, fun loving and well informed about the world around them. It's this blending of the ancient and modern that makes Bhutan endlessly fascinating.

There is the amazing Himalayan landscape, where snow-capped peaks rise above shadowy gorges cloaked in primeval forests. Taking up prime positions in this picture-book landscape are the majestic fortress-like dzongs and monasteries. This unique architecture sets the stage for spectacular tsechus (dance festivals) attended by an almost medieval-looking audience. Then there are the textiles and handicrafts, outrageous archery competitions, high-altitude trekking trails, and stunning flora and fauna.

Environmental protection goes hand in hand with cultural preservation in Bhutan. By law, at least 60% of the country must remain forested for all future generations; it currently stands above 70%. Not only is Bhutan carbon neutral, but it actually absorbs more carbon than it emits! For the visitor, this translates into lovely forest hikes and superb birding across a chain of national parks. Whether you are spotting takins or blue poppies, trekking beneath 7000m peaks or strolling across hillsides ablaze with spring rhododendron blooms, Bhutan offers one of the last pristine pockets in the entire Himalaya.

This is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. It was built by a Tibetan King in the 7th century and was one of 108 temples constructed by him to subdue a demon that was terrorising the people of the Himalayas. It houses many important relics including a 7th century statue which is believed to have been cast at the same time as its famous counterpart in Lhasa Tibet.Читать далее

Atop a hill in Thimphu is a massive 169 foot golden Buddha sitting on a gilded mediation hall. Inside there are 125,000 miniature buddhas which are also gilded and made of bronze. It cost almost US$100 million to build. It was constructed in 2015 to honour the 60th birthday of the 4th King of Bhutan.
