  • Kronborg Castle

    13. januar 2018, Danmark ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

Off the train and a short walk out of the township was Kronborg Castle which was built in 1420. It’s been burned to the ground and rebuilt since, but always maintained its vital position at the head of the Oresund Sound. Ships passing into the Baltic Sea paid tolls at Kronborg Castle and Helsingor which was once one of the most important towns in Europe. The castle was also immortalised by Shakespeare's Hamlet. Whilst this castle is very important it does not appear to have been decorated as elaborately as other castles we have visited. It does have the largest ballroom in a castle in Northern Europe and some very lovely tapestries.Les mer

  • Holger Danske

    13. januar 2018, Danmark ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

The legend of Holger Danske, or Holger the Dane, is nearly a millennium old. The legend tells of a Danish prince accomplishing great feats after being sent to Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne as a hostage.

The legend actually originated in France, but it has been adopted by the Danes. He has become a national hero, turning up everywhere from the inspiration for World War II resistance to cultural references to modern commercial branding.

Holger’s connection to Kronborg is rather tenuous. The link is actually one of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales 1846 that placed Holger in the tunnels under Kronborg.

The statue is also relatively new Danish sculptor Hans Peder Pedersen-Dan cast the original in bronze in 1907. The one on display now is a cast of that original.

As you can see, it doesn’t have the typical dynamism of a statue of a hero. Instead, Holger is sleeping, his arms resting on his sword. Legend has it that he will awake if Denmark is ever again threatened.

  • Kronburg Castle Sea Wall

    13. januar 2018, Danmark ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

As it was time to go back to the train station we left the castle and walked to the sea wall past the cannons which defended the castle from it's enemies.

We arrived back at the hotel late afternoon. Dinner was a traditional Danish meal at the restaurant next door Frk Barners Kaelder.Les mer

  • Leaving Copenhagen

    14. januar 2018, Danmark ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Today we are leaving Copenhagen and the 3 bears at Anderson Hotel are reading the paper and playing cards as they waved us goodbye.

The holiday is just about over, a few more airports and we will be back in Sydney. Currently sitting in the lounge in Copenhagen and about to start my Woolworths shopping online so we have food in the afternoon of the day we arrive back at Camperdown Castle.

Next post will be in London.

  • Heathrow London

    14. januar 2018, England ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

Interesting flight, it was a very easy flight but we had children all around us, the children in the rows in front were very good. The row behind not so good the 3 children kept changing seats with mum and dad and kicking the seats. I let it go as it was a short flight to London. However, the gentleman in the row next to us was not so calm, he must of complained a few times as their Dad said well at least you only have them for a little while we have them for the next 26 hours to Sydney. We thought no way and hope they are sitting somewhere else on the flight home. Stopover in Dubai.Les mer

  • Dubai Airport

    15. januar 2018, De forente arabiske emirater ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Finally arrived in Dubai and it was fogged in so we could not land. Yes, that's right fog not sand. We left Heathrow a few hours late in hope that the fog would clear, alas it did not. So we had to land in Muscat and refuel, we have now landed in Dubai, running 5 hours late, and await the last leg of our Scandinavian Adventure.Les mer

  • Memories of our Scandinavian Holiday

    16. januar 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We had a fabulous time seeing lots of interesting museums, awe inspiring castles, beautiful scenery, learnt a lot about the countries we visited, had adventures on snow mobiles, reindeer sleigh, husky sled rides, saw the northern lights, passed over the Arctic Circle twice, sailed the west coast of Norway. Met some lovely people and sat on Santa's knee at his home on Christmas Eve before he left to deliver everyone's Christmas Gifts.

Who would have thought that even though it was cold and darkish for a lot of this holiday you could see and do so much.
