We will be going through jungles to hopefully see leopards, riding on a train through tea plantations, visiting a number of ruins, attending the Kandy Esala Perahera, exploring some exotic places and celebrating Carol's Birthday. Read more
  • Ravana Falls

    Ravana Falls is renowned for being one of Sri Lanka's wildest waterfalls. The cascading body of water is 82ft and in the Ravana Wildlife Sanctuary. The Falls are named after the demon King Ravana who according to folklore he ruled Sri Lanka.

    The falls in the dry season has very little water in the wet season the falls apparently are spectacular.

  • More Food

    Shanuka certainly wants to fatten us up. We do love that we are trying all the local food.

  • Tissa Lake

    Tissa Wewa is a reservoir near Yala and thought to have been constructed in 3rd Century BC either by Mahanage of Ruhuna or his successor Yatala Tissa of Ruhuna in order to irrigate paddy lands and supply water to the city. The Lake was restored in 1871 and many locals enjoy water sports and swimming in the lake albeit having crocodiles.Read more

    Shanuka has been at it again with decorations. It is a lovely surprise. The room is quite nice with a lovely outlook over the pool.

  • Yala National Park

    Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park hugging the Indian Ocean. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons.

    Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammals and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks, and crocodiles.

  • Yala National Park

    This park was quite different to Wilpattu, Yala is quite dry and dusty. Even the drivers are different in Wilpattu they chatted to each other as you passed by their jeep, Yala they just drove past. We did not see as many animals either.Read more

  • Leopard Found

    Yala National Park has the highest density of leopards in the world, making it a premier destination for spotting these elusive big cats.

    The park’s Block 1 is particularly famous for leopard sightings, with an estimated density of one leopard per square kilometer, and around 25 individual leopards roaming this area alone.

    The Leopards have adapted to safari vehicles, making them more visible and easier to photograph compared to other regions.

  • What an Experience

    Finding a leopard really was an incredible experience. Certainly, worth all the driving or should I say racing around the park in search of a big cat.

  • Dinner

    Another buffet dinner all the food is now starting to look and taste the same. The major difference here was the desserts, so many and beautifully presented.

  • Breakfast

    Breakfast was nice, but very slow. A number of people ordering eggs and waffles like they have never eaten before or will again. The young chef I think sympathised with me waiting patiently and decorated my waffles and delivered to my table.Read more

  • Heading to Galle

    This morning we will be driving to Galle. Of course stopping by tourist attractions. Drive without stops is nearly 2 hours.

    First stop bats in a tree, not sure why Shanuka thought this deserved a photo stop.

    Next the Hindu Radio Station.

    We are now driving on a freeway where no tuk tuk tractors or motorbikes are allowed.

  • Pole Fishing in the Indian Ocean

    Traditional pole fishing known as Ritipanna where fisherman balance on a narrow crossbar attached to a vertical pole planted in the seabed. It is a centuries old practice along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, particularly near Galle.

    Fishermen sit on a crossbar called a petta, tied to a vertical pole planted into the seabed a few meters offshore, and fish with slender rods while balancing above the water.

    This method allows access to fish rich areas without disturbing the water, making it both sustainable and visually striking.

    Galle, before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, was the main port on the island. Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, during the Dutch colonial period. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. The city was extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards.Read more

    The Galle Fort is also known has Dutch Fort or the Ramparts of Galle. Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1588 and heavily fortified by the Dutch.

    The Galle fort is a World Heritage Site and is the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers.Read more
