  • Ready Set Go

    17 de agosto, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

All packed and ready to go.

Packing for this trip as been harder than other trips due to only having a 1 hour layover in Singapore. We have split our clothes over 2 checked bags and our carry on just in case our bags go astray. At least we will know as we have apple air tags. Fingers crossed this does not happen. As the scout motto goes " Be Prepared"

Our usual lift to the airport certainly takes the stress out of driving.

    Time to go on holidays.

  • Pledge Scape

    18 de agosto, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Pledge Scape is right on Negombo Beach. A shame we will not have much time her to use the pool or swim at the beach. We are also a 10min drive from the major shopping area. We did get to sleep in a little as the sightseeing is all local today.Leer más

This fort is a historical colonial fort located on the circular road in Negombo town. The fort was originally built by the Portuguese in the early 17th century as a small square defensive post. Then captured and rebuilt by the Dutch India Company in 1672 into a pentagon shape. It was then taken by the British in 1796 without heavy resistance. In the late 1800's the British demolished most of the fort walls to build a prison.Leer más

  • Negombo Dried Fish Markets

    18 de agosto, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This was a very interesting experience as we had one of the fishermen show and explain the process of drying the fish. The fishermen use the traditional open air method which involves cleaning, heavily salting and sun drying for 3 days. The workers must flip and turn the fish by hand every day, so they dry on both sides. Once all the moisture has gone the workers pack the dried fish to be sold in the local markets or shipped across Sri Lanka.Leer más

  • Negombo Fish Market

    18 de agosto, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Negombo made its start as a fishing community, and fishermen today continue to hawk their wares on the city’s sandy shores at 2nd largest fish markets in Sri Lanka. Starting from as early as 4AM, fishing boats begin to make their way to the beach laden with that morning’s catch. Shrimps, crabs and lobsters are hunted at the famous Negombo Lagoon, while fresh fish is hauled in from the waves of the Indian Ocean.

Adjacent to the shores of drying fish, the wet market is where fresh seafood can be bought. Ranging from of offers of tuna, mackerel, squid, sardines and shark, the market is said to be closed on Sundays when the city’s predominantly Catholic population heads to church. However, some Muslim fishermen still operate on Sunday, so it is still possible to witness the fishing community in action 7 days a week.

While some of the fish for sale at the market are brought in fresh, others have been brought in from larger wholesalers in the morning to be sold here. The best fish are sold to local hotels and restaurants before being relegated to either the marketplace or to being dried under the sun on the beach.

  • Hamilton Dutch Canal

    18 de agosto, Sri Lanka ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

At the start we thought what a waste of money at $100, but the tour was quite good.

We started going through very dirty smelly water for 10 to 15 minutes then the area opened up to a beautiful waterway.

The Hamilton Canal Negombo is a waterway stretching over 14 kilometers. During the 15th century it served as the principal seaport for the cinnamon trade. The canal winds its way through Sri Lanka’s coastal towns, connecting Puttalam to Colombo and passing through the bustling city of Negombo.

Originally built by the British in 1802, the canal holds remnants of Dutch influence and centuries of history.

Between 1802 and 1804 Gavin Hamilton rebuilt the Canal to run a straighter course.
