Today we kicked off our trip in Mauritius!

We are staying in Grand Baie which is a lively village in the north west of the island. We enjoyed breakfast on our balcony, followed by a nice walk on the beach. We unexpectedly ran into Brian, who was Jacques’ air bnb host when they came here for a family holiday in 2018. Brian is a local who has lived here his whole life. He was so welcoming and excited to see us. He invited us to his favourite local restaurant for the “best prawns in Grand Baie” at Helena’s cafe which was further north in a place called Cap Malheureux. His cousin (who lives in Perth) and his friend also came to lunch. The prawns were amazing, charred and tossed through a garlic/chilli sauce. We also had delicious chicken crispy noodles and rice. I couldn’t believe how cheap it was, $10 per person for all that food!

After lunch we checked out the oldest church in Mauritius which overlooks the water, called Notre Dame Auxiliatrice. We then caught the bus to Pereybere Beach and spent the afternoon swimming and exploring. The water is sooo warm I’ve never felt anything like it. We’re excited for a day out on the water for a boat tour tomorrow!
